WASHINGTON — Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.

Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed "offensive material." The summit and the exhibit hall where the boxes were sold had been open since Thursday afternoon.

The box was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.

David Nammo, executive director of the lobbying group FRC Action, said summit organizers were told the boxes were a parody of Obama's policy positions but had not examined them closely.

Republican Party stalwarts Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney were among speakers at the forum, which officials said drew 2,100 activists from 44 states.

While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama's politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian.

On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?"

The novelty item also takes shots at 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, Obama's wife, Michelle, and Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The Obama campaign declined to comment.

Wearing white chef's aprons, Whitlock and DeMoss were doing a brisk business at noon Saturday selling the waffle mix to people crowded around their booth. Two pyramids of waffle mix boxes stood several feet high on the booth's table.

"It's the ultimate political souvenir," DeMoss told a customer.

Asked if he considered the pictures of Obama on the box to be racial stereotypes, Whitlock said: "We had some people mention that to us, but you think of Newman's Own or Emeril's _ there are tons and tons of personality-branded food products on the market. So we've taken that model and, using political satire, have highlighted his policies, his position changes."

The socially conservative public policy groups American Values and Focus on the Family Action co-sponsored the summit.

Really glad those 'good ol' boys' explained their 'creative process'. Their home folks must be very proud. It's interesting that the "Values" folks that sponsored this activity took over two days to discover such a 'value-laden' product was being sold on the premises.
Do these organizations enjoy any kind of tax exemption because they are 'religion' based?

They have no shame.

The makers' of Cream of Wheat and Aunt Jemima could possiby have a legal right to confiscate their product because of packaging likeness.

The fact that they sold out at the conservative Value Voters Conference is no surprise to many . Did you see the confused Black woman speaker? I'll bet she bought a case!

So now these jokers get lots of free publicity. I'm sure Bill-O will be hawking them soon, and Fox news will be showing this "story" along with a website address for ordering them.

I don't see the overt racism in them. If Obama wasn't black, then I'm pretty sure no one would. That's the problem with racism--it is sneaky. I'm sure these good 'ole boys see this as nuthin' but harmless fun. It doesn't matter the intent, however. Overt racism is easy to see. This is the kind that makes a lot of people say "huh?" .

This reminds me of the "doll" experiement where decades ago they found that even very young girls preferred white dolls over dolls of that looked more like themselves, and attributed "bad" qualities to dolls like them and "good" qualities to the white dolls. Seems to me I recall that this experiment has been recently reconducted with the same results.

We don't need to debate on whether or not the items are racist. Intent is not a factor. Effect is what counts.

This is beyond RACISM! As a black person i find this insulting and degrading. Why is the media not covering this?

Did this organization of Stooges for the Plutocracy have any boxes on hand with Condi Rice's image on it for sale among the Stooges and the slack-jawed Dupes in attendance to hear Flipflopper Mutt Romney with his list of things he was for before he was against them and to hear Newtie Gingrich squeak his way through another presentation of rightwing bilge?

This is a direct result of the continued drop in our Educational standards. People don't read, study, or take the time to learn that what people wear as clothing is not a direct correlation to their religion. I would add that the drop in our educational rankings globally is directly proportional to the rise in the religious right and the conservative movement. These ignorant, non-learned folks fall back to the basic belief in the invisible man in the sky, the American flag, and the American military (pseudo-Patriotism) as the answer to every problem or threat. They see anyone with any sense of global knowledge as an elitist when they are basically in a state of arrested development.

As our educational standards drop, so rise the ignorant masses I love to call the conservative movement.

Here here...excellent post. If I didn't know better, I would honestly think the human race is devolving back to caveman status. Especially in America. Everyone plays checkers now....no one plays chess. I've been to such diverse places as Beijing, Taiwan, Iceland, Switzerland....and I've got to tell you....we Americans are looking real stupid these days, all over the world. And I don't mean that as an insult, I mean it as a wake-up call. Palinites, GOP Conservative stalwarts, Zealots mesmerized by the Bible.....this dire situation we are in right now is just too important for your narrow, selfish agendas. It's just way too critical for you to get behind the candidate that is concerned with education, who in fact was an educator at Harvard for 10 years...not the dinosaur who has no vested interest in furthering America's status amongst the worlds intellectuals, but instead wants to waste our young minds on the battlefields of Fallujah, Teheran, Caracas, and Cheng Du. If we don't get a leg up now, we are finished. Simple as that. Irrefutable logic from a die-hard Obamacan.

This forum is SAD. It's probably attended by white racist. I hope this is not repeat of the Kerry "flip-flop" and renamed it as "Obama Waffle".

I just hope the Democrats have equally strong rebuttal to these allege "waffling" and address each one of them. These Repugs have a way of distorting the issues, and put them out of context. I am afraid that independents and undecided will be caught in these "waffling", and see the repeat of the Kerry presidency.

They would be remiss to associate themselves with these people, but hey Newt was there, so! The lowest of the low on display to the rest of the world.
