NEW YORK (AP) _ Tina Fey was "likely" to play Gov. Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live," said a person close to NBC's sketch comedy show.

Fey is "likely" to return to her former show Saturday to play the Alaskan governor and Sen. John McCain's running mate, a person close to the show told The Associated Press on Friday night. The person requested anonymity because the decision has not been announced officially. No further details were available.

Since Palin's entry onto the national political stage, speculation had been rampant over who might play Palin on the program. Many have commented that Fey resembles her.

In an interview earlier this week with The AP, "SNL" executive producer and creator Lorne Michaels said, "The whole world cast her in that role."

The final decision went down to the last minute, apparently. "SNL" premieres Saturday evening with Michael Phelps as host. An appearance had been planned by Sen. Barack Obama, but his campaign said early Saturday that the Democratic nominee for president was canceling.

Fey was a cast member and writer _ including a stint as head writer _ for "SNL" for nine years before leaving in 2006 to star in "30 Rock," which is also produced by Michaels. On Tuesday, Michaels said that should Fey play Palin, she was unlikely to remain in the part in the long-term, which depending on the election results, could be for four years or longer.

Fey's publicist did not immediately return a call requesting comment.

Tina is too qualified to play insane Palin. Mrs. Palin, this isn't high school anymore. We live in a complex world where you don't know everyone. The US has real experts, people with PhDs from MIT, Harvard, and Columbia. People who understand other cultures. This is the real deal. As a scientist and engineer, Insalin scares the hell out of me. What science funding will be cut? Maybe anything that uses the premise that the world is over 10,000 years old.

The flattening of the world continues. America's future depends on science and technology. If we put a creationist nut job in office, our future is bleak. I pray for my kids. What is wrong with modern America? Are we that ignorant?

Palin Says She Has Broad Authority to Look At Private State Files

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is maneuvering to stop an investigation into an alleged abuse of power, in part, by claiming that she has an unlimited right to pry into the personnel records of all state employees, including the state trooper who divorced her sister.

Palin’s new position was summed up in a Sept. 9 letter from Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg to the state legislature, which has authorized an independent counsel probe into whether Palin and her staff illegally accessed confidential personnel records of her ex-brother-in-law, state trooper Mike Wooten.

The probe also focuses on Palin’s firing of state Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan in July after he refused to fire Wooten.

Colberg’s argument is that Palin can access confidential files of any state employee she chooses and thus the allegation that she got unauthorized access to Wooten’s personnel records – by whatever means – is moot.

Oh. My God. That was the single best impression I've ever seen on SNL. I really thought it was Palin at first, and she had the voice and the look and the mannerisms DEAD ON. You KICKED ASS, Tina!

Yes she nailed it; she looked just like Sarah, and behaved just like her. There is lots more of material for Tina to bring out about Sarah; she should be on every Saurday.

"Many have commented that Fey resembles her."

More like someone commented to palin about her likeness to Fey and she exaggerates it with her hairstyle and choice of glasses.

Meh. Saturday Night Live should focus more on it's mediocre comedy writing than who will play Palin.

There are undoubtedly over a million women in this country that could do Sarah Palin...they'll be coming out of the woodwork, calling agents and making appearances. We will be overrun with Palins, like a locust invasion.

They've got it all wrong with Tina. It needs to be ROSEANNE BARR!! Listen to the inflection in Sarah and Roseanne's voice, they are one and the same...not to mention that with all of Roseanne's surgery, she's a dead-ringer for Sarah. If you agree with me, tell 20 people you know. Roseanne for VP!!!
