When Karl Rove is saying your political ads have gone too far, you know you must be doing something dishonest.

The former Bush chief strategist, appearing on Fox News Sunday, said that John McCain had stretched the truth in his recent round of attacks against Barack Obama, in the process opening up the Arizonan to a round of effective counter-attacks.

"McCain has gone in his ads one step too far, and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100-percent-truth test," said Rove. "Both campaigns ought to be careful about... there ought to be an adult who says: 'Do we really need to go that far in this ad? Don't we make our point and get broader acceptance and deny the opposition an opportunity to attack us if we don't include that one little last tweak in the ad?'"

Watch:

McCain has received a heaping dose of criticism late this week for launching a series of advertisements that could be categorized as dishonest if not downright lies. The Obama camp, in a memo to reporters Sunday morning -- entitled a "Dishonorable, Dishonest Campaign" -- highlighted a number of these pieces. Joe Klein, of Time magazine called one spot the "sleaziest" he had ever seen. Paul Krugman of the New York Times, defined the episode as a "blizzard of lies." On Sunday, the St. Petersburg Times, ran an editorial entitled: "Campaign Of Lies Disgraces McCain," while the Chicago Tribune's Steve Chapman, wrote that "to McCain the truth is expendable."

That Rove would acknowledge truth in these complaints is somewhat remarkable. The man known as Bush's brain made a reputation of slinging mud at the opposition and waiting for it to stick.

But it should be noted, Rove's complaints with McCain's strategy was not that it had elicited the condemnation of groups like politifact or factcheck.org -- "You can't trust the fact check organization in all respect," he said. "They are human beings and individuals; they have got their own biases in there." Rather, he argued that by exaggerating so wildly, the Republican presidential nominee had opened himself up to political attacks.

"They don't need to attack each other in this way," he said. "They have legitimate points to make about each other."

UPDATE: Sure enough, the Obama campaign weighs in... gleefully.

"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove - the man who held the previous record - said McCain's ads have gone too far," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

***MEGA BREAKING NEWS***BREAKING NEWS*** OBAMA CAMPAIGN MAY BE OVER

If this is true the OBAMA campaign is over!
According to the NY POST:

OBAMA TRIED TO STALL GIS' IRAQ WITHDRAWAL

http://www.nypost.com/seven/09152008/postopinion/opedcolumnists/obama_tried_to_stall_gis_iraq_withdrawal_129150.htm?page=0

"Such a private request for delayed troop reductions would run counter to Obama's public statements on Iraq, in which he calls for an immediate withdrawal. Further, an attempt to subvert the executive branch would be contrary to established U.S. foreign policy.

If Zebari's statements are discovered to be true, Obama would be guilty of the most unadulterated political profiteering and moral corruption in modern history. To seek electoral gain on the deception of a nation at war and the blood of American soldiers is nothing less than treasonous villainy - for which the offender ought to be tarred and feathered before being expelled from the country. Schmidt and Rove are cut from the same cloth and are front line and center in the campaign of calumny against Barrack Obama.

My guess is that Rove threw the kitchen sink at him, then threw Palin, other big cow lies, the sex ed lies, the fake polls, the RACE card, the green slimy stuff (or was that from the excorcist movie)..I dunno. He threw so much at Obama and created so much smoke... I lost count. :(

Hmmm Schmidt just told him how much the stuff weighed, cheered him on, spread even more fear and lies in the media.

"Do not DARE write the truth about her, you sexist media" he says. Also, yes, she does not know much about ANYTHING-- hey, but that reduces expectations for her in the VP debate." so the Gibson interview was a win win. She is an empty vessel so y'wal know what to expect... eh?

Yes, I believe Rove means what he is saying about the slime in the ads and his sheer outrage at it... emmm.... just as I believe that McCain is COMPUTER LITERATE and spends all his time writing code to make his webpage better. And oh, he reads e-mail too. SURE!

The biggest lie in Rove's comment is that he used the term "both" campaigns are lying in ads.
Why hasn't anyone asked him to Define which one of Obama's ads are lies?
Why are they NEVER challenged on the basis of their comment?
This is why Elections are lost. All you have to do is hammer away at the TRUTH!

He said both campaigns has ads that go "too far".

Obama has an ad that is critical of McCain for not being able to use a computer or send an e-mail.

McCain suffered injuries during his time in the Hanoi Hilton when he was tourtured and it prevents him from lifting his arms over his head or typing on a keyboard.

The Obama campaign doesn't mention that part in the ad.

This is probably going to come across as disrespectful to the disabled, which is not my intent at all. However, I'm not sure that if one can't even use a keyboard that one should "have one's finger on the button", so to speak. And as far as lifting his arms over his head, what's with all the waving, then? I'm sure I've seen McCain without both arms at his side...and of course the Obama campaign isn't going to mention any POW injuries...Mr. McCain does a fine job of bringing up his stint as a POW at every turn...he certainly doesn't need any help from his opposition.

STOP!!! As outlined in an article earlier this week, McCain held several military administrative positions after he returned from capture and typed during these positions. Lets stop making excuses for this dinosaur.

He also said the "lipstick" comment following so close to Palin's nationwide exposure was no accident.

Rove's assessment of ads NOT as useful as one might think.

Folks, this is not about singing to choir, gleefully claiming Rove dis'd John McCain's ads. Certainly, Rove's statements can be used -- carefully -- to support a "war room" type of response from Obama, BUT remember Rove looks at the big picture.

What he's done is state BOTH campaigns have not met that 100% accurate criterion which tends to (a) minimize the blatant lies of McCain, and (b) equate them with Obama ads. The right wing doesn't care what McCain's ad say. What might Rove's statements do for moderate Rs and Is? They diminish the effect of Obama ads. Be cautious how you use this information.

Americans average IQ is 100. We need an IQ test or a common sense test to weed out certain citizens from voting in elections.

The republicans have tried that. It's called voter registration but you democrats seem to have a problem with that. Dead people and illegal immigrants can't vote.

What Karl is trying to say is, I've found a new covert way to smear Obama, but you suckers will think we've had a change of heart.

1/2 the voters in this country don't care if McCain's ads are dishonest, or if McCain's Republican party policies are responsible for the economic crisis - they are voting for him anyway.

You can't fix Stupid.

79 million people did not vote in the last election. We ALL need to fish in that pool.
