When Karl Rove is saying your political ads have gone too far, you know you must be doing something dishonest.

The former Bush chief strategist, appearing on Fox News Sunday, said that John McCain had stretched the truth in his recent round of attacks against Barack Obama, in the process opening up the Arizonan to a round of effective counter-attacks.

"McCain has gone in his ads one step too far, and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100-percent-truth test," said Rove. "Both campaigns ought to be careful about... there ought to be an adult who says: 'Do we really need to go that far in this ad? Don't we make our point and get broader acceptance and deny the opposition an opportunity to attack us if we don't include that one little last tweak in the ad?'"

Watch:

McCain has received a heaping dose of criticism late this week for launching a series of advertisements that could be categorized as dishonest if not downright lies. The Obama camp, in a memo to reporters Sunday morning -- entitled a "Dishonorable, Dishonest Campaign" -- highlighted a number of these pieces. Joe Klein, of Time magazine called one spot the "sleaziest" he had ever seen. Paul Krugman of the New York Times, defined the episode as a "blizzard of lies." On Sunday, the St. Petersburg Times, ran an editorial entitled: "Campaign Of Lies Disgraces McCain," while the Chicago Tribune's Steve Chapman, wrote that "to McCain the truth is expendable."

That Rove would acknowledge truth in these complaints is somewhat remarkable. The man known as Bush's brain made a reputation of slinging mud at the opposition and waiting for it to stick.

But it should be noted, Rove's complaints with McCain's strategy was not that it had elicited the condemnation of groups like politifact or factcheck.org -- "You can't trust the fact check organization in all respect," he said. "They are human beings and individuals; they have got their own biases in there." Rather, he argued that by exaggerating so wildly, the Republican presidential nominee had opened himself up to political attacks.

"They don't need to attack each other in this way," he said. "They have legitimate points to make about each other."

UPDATE: Sure enough, the Obama campaign weighs in... gleefully.

"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove - the man who held the previous record - said McCain's ads have gone too far," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

I think all Rove is trying to do is get the moderate to the lefties out there to look his way. It's just a strategy. Look lefties!! (sneak attack on Obama)

No need to sneak. The guy is weak and an empty suit. He talks and talks and talks and has never served his country in any capacity, or run a business, or been elected to any executive position.

This is Karl's spin as I see it ... by saying that both candidates have gone too far (and supposedly lied), it gives him some credibility ... specially when he dismisses obviously inconsequential ads (that the rest of the media has already dismissed) from McCain ... but here is the beauty, he also gets to dismiss ads from the Obama camp and call them lies (even if they are not and there is substance to it) ... I saw it today in FOX News ... they were saying that the ad from Obama on the economy was not truth (I thought that the ad portrayed the truth about Senator McCain and the economy) ... they were also saying that some stupid ad from McCain was not true, but ...

Do you get the picture ??

Watch out for Rove. His statement about McCain's campaign lies going too far is a red herring. Rove has something up his sleeve. Believe it.

Not this time though, I don't think Rove has anything up his sleeve. Rove wants McCain to win and he would do anything to win. But Rove is a manipulator and he's smart, and yes, he's a good liar. McCain on the other hand is terrible at lying. When everyone and their brothers know you're lying, you should stop. But McCain is too dumb to know that, so Rove is trying to stop him from making a fool of himself.

Democrats--Don't trust anything from Karl Rove. You know he has a reason for everything he says and does. No way is he going to side with Democrats.
I believe that he wants Obama to win so that he has the space and time to get Jeb Bush lined up to be President in 2012. It was impossible for Jeb Bush to enter the race after the mess made by gwb. Rove is a sneeky, dirty fighter.

Indirectly related to Rove's comment (in that a distortion of the truth is involved), while watching Lou Dobbs tonight I heard him criticizing Obama for calling USICE agents "terrorists" during a speech he made to the NCLR in July:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN_GO3YAdEA

Dobbs insists that Obama referred to ICE agents as "terrorists".

I disagree.

I can see where someone could jump to that conclusion because the root of the word is "terror", but that's not what he said. He was referring to illegal aliens being "terrorized" by ICE raids, not ICE or its agents being "terrorists" (Learn English, Lou, would ya?! I expect more of a Harvard Man!).

Anytime a person puts themselves at risk of arrest by breaking the law, he's "terrorized", isn't he?

Obama never said "those ICE terrorists". What he said was "when communities are terrorized by ICE immigration raids...the system just isn't working".

Obama's big mistake? Using that word "terrorized". He should have known that his detractors would spin that like a dreidel.

In hindsight, had I written his speech for him, I would have written it this way:

"When entire communities live in terror for fear of arrest...the system just isn't working, and we need to change it."

But he never called the ICE agents "terrorists": Lou merely said he did.

And his erudite fans ate it up: "Lou said it, I believe it, that settles it!"

It's all a ploy, perfectly orchestrated by Conductor Rove himself.

McCain steered off course too far. Time to right the Repub ship.

To make him seem reasonable again, he got marching instructions to cave on the lipstick lie. It's just lipstick after all.

Perfect Rove, except for one thing. We all know you and McCain are lock-step at the hip.

How did Rove get into this act......thought we had enough of him before.

Guess his last 15 minutes of fame didn't last long enough.
Maybe he is behind all the negative ads he is referring to.

This thing is really turning into a circus.
elephants...donkeys...and now Rove...

Yes he did....not that he offered up any *examples* of wrong-doing by Obama. At least none that I had seen - I could be mistaken.

Yes he did. What a hypocrite! He is the master-mind of the current style of mudslinging going on right now. They are just taking his example. It is like someone telling his kids not to smoke, yet he is a chain smoker(of the smoke and mirrors type that is) himself.

Rove knows that the 527's are about to let loose on McCain. This is another republican tactic, just like the polls. Don't believe either.

Folks, the Obamma party has been informed of the depths Karl Rove will go to in order to steal an elections, including falsly crying foul on national interviews. Once again those of us whom you dont see or know, are working hard to get Obamma's people caught up on the kinds of issues Rove is capable of. I recieved a response today from the Obamma camp informing me, they have read all emails pertaining to this I sent them on this topic, are taking it seriously. No way in hell will Obamma allow Rove to steal what the American People deserve, that is a president and vice president who intend to follow the rules of law while in office. Rove is in for a very ugly shock.

I am a moderate democrat that held a level of respect for John McCain but not anymore. I would have thought the appointment of Sarah Palin as his running mate and his campaing's recent series of ads were beneath him. Apparently they are not. Very dissappointing and disheartening.

Obama/Biden's attack lines over the next 7 weeks should include this explicit warning:

This is it, folks. The way they campaign tells you something important about the way they'll govern. If you don't like the dishonest way the government has been run for these last 8 years, this Nov 4th is your last chance to take a stand against it for the next 4 years, and then that's it -- you'll be powerless once again to do anything about it.

If there's one thing we've learned from Republicans, it's that fear-mongering works. Sometimes--like in this case--it's even appropriate.

To anyone who actually believes him: I got a bridge to sell ya...

Classic CYA and nothing more. He don't want to show how he's behind these ads in one way or another.
