When Karl Rove is saying your political ads have gone too far, you know you must be doing something dishonest.

The former Bush chief strategist, appearing on Fox News Sunday, said that John McCain had stretched the truth in his recent round of attacks against Barack Obama, in the process opening up the Arizonan to a round of effective counter-attacks.

"McCain has gone in his ads one step too far, and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100-percent-truth test," said Rove. "Both campaigns ought to be careful about... there ought to be an adult who says: 'Do we really need to go that far in this ad? Don't we make our point and get broader acceptance and deny the opposition an opportunity to attack us if we don't include that one little last tweak in the ad?'"

Watch:

McCain has received a heaping dose of criticism late this week for launching a series of advertisements that could be categorized as dishonest if not downright lies. The Obama camp, in a memo to reporters Sunday morning -- entitled a "Dishonorable, Dishonest Campaign" -- highlighted a number of these pieces. Joe Klein, of Time magazine called one spot the "sleaziest" he had ever seen. Paul Krugman of the New York Times, defined the episode as a "blizzard of lies." On Sunday, the St. Petersburg Times, ran an editorial entitled: "Campaign Of Lies Disgraces McCain," while the Chicago Tribune's Steve Chapman, wrote that "to McCain the truth is expendable."

That Rove would acknowledge truth in these complaints is somewhat remarkable. The man known as Bush's brain made a reputation of slinging mud at the opposition and waiting for it to stick.

But it should be noted, Rove's complaints with McCain's strategy was not that it had elicited the condemnation of groups like politifact or factcheck.org -- "You can't trust the fact check organization in all respect," he said. "They are human beings and individuals; they have got their own biases in there." Rather, he argued that by exaggerating so wildly, the Republican presidential nominee had opened himself up to political attacks.

"They don't need to attack each other in this way," he said. "They have legitimate points to make about each other."

UPDATE: Sure enough, the Obama campaign weighs in... gleefully.

"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove - the man who held the previous record - said McCain's ads have gone too far," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Rove actually said that the ads of BOTH candidates have gone too far. His comments were not restricted to McCain. Check out a real news source.

Oh please, you know Rove wrote the script. If it's negative Karl Rove is behind it.

Huh? So you believe that Rove is only critical of McCain? He is so smitten by Obama that he loves Obama now?

What planet are you on? Do you believe everything that the HP tells you? It is Orwellian.

Rove criticized BOTH candidates. Big Brother doesn't think that you should know that. Big Brother just wants you to know that he criticized McCain. Sweet dreams, brainwashed Zombie.

You know all you whiners that for the first time in the last twenty years the media is doing it's job and trying to stay above the sh**.
Also it is so p***** off with the way it was fooled into unquestioning support for Bush's response to 911 and all the embarassing disasters that his jokers have perpetrated on the american people and the globe since then that it is not going to let republican whining stop it from doing it's job now.
Rove is not stupid, he's mendacious, so he's going to try to finesse the situation.
Everyone is bored of the elephant being so sensitive on the one hand and aggressive on the other.
It is not attractive nor ideal in any field.
Imagine a head-a-state meeting with the McCain-Palin's. Would they ever start doing any diplomacy or would the whole thing be an argument over some B-S protocol of disrespectin' lipstick or seating order or some other garbage.

You folks are hilarious, watch the entire original video.
The piece was how BOTH candidates have gone too far. Wise up folks.

Another demonstration of media exploiting ignorant people who don't do their homework. C'mon, restore your dignity and do some research.

micalsoft -- So what?! It's hardly news that Karl Rove would cast stones at Democrats, and it certainly doesn't mean there's any truth to it. What IS news is his admission that McCain has gone too far and, apparently, crossed a line that even the Dark Lord Rove himself wouldn't cross (even if only for tactical, as opposed to ethical, reasons).

Similarly, if a Paul Begala or a James Carville says that Obama's attacks on McCain have gone too far, then it would be fair for you and your conservative friends (not that any of you would concern yourself with what's fair) would be justified in pointing that out to Dems as evidence that, Yes, in fact, your candidate really must have gone too far. But as far as I know, no such admissions have been made by any Dem operatives because Obama has not gone anywhere remotely near the depths to which McCain has sunk.

One more way to read this piece of news is that Rove wants to
'live to fight another day' Perhaps this is the way to distance himself
from the percieved loose cannon methodology to McCain's campaign.
...Like a rat from a sinking ship.....???

I'll welcome this as a bit of encouraging news.

We know McCain is lying.

Why doesn't Rove talk about Obama's lies? Could it be because he can't find any?

The guy who wrote the book on slander and lying in poilitics says McSame's "gone too far..."

This is like the criminal who notices only that he "got caught."

For Karl, rovian lies and doubletalk only "go to far" when even his target demographic does not believe him.

This is the guy who let the genie out of the bottle. How ironic. It must be scary, worrying for him to see how he has ripped the lid off of voter legitimacy by showing succesfully how susceptable voters are to the 'bull' quotient. He is probably worried that McCain, taking a page out of his playbook will be succesful and that the definitive strategy for winning the presedential election will set the strategy for all future campaigns to come by the Republicans. I think he is worried history is going to look back on this era and note how he was the major architect on how politics were played in the early part of the 21st. century. And maybe just maybe it will be the death of them eventually when they can't win by any other way. Lincoln said, "you can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you can't fool all of the people all of the time". Hopefully it is JUST the Republican party.

There are two questions to ask whenever one encounters verbiage attributed to Rove.

How does this befuddling set of statements further his agenda?

What can I do to counter this perversion of the facts?

Question for Mr. Rove.

Mr. Rove, why are you not in jail?

Doesn't anybody understand? For once Rove is telling the absolute truth. Yeah. really.

Why? What's Rove's cardinal rule?
NEVER DO YOUR OWN DIRTY WORK!
ALWAYS HAVE A SURROGATE DO IT FOR YOU!
ALWAYS HAVE DEGREES OF SEPARATION BETWEEN YOU AND THE EXECUTOR!

McCain's campaign has violated this basic rule of Rove's. I'll even bet he told them to use surrogates, like "Swift Boat Veterans For Truth" and they didn't listen. Plus, NOTHING p***es off a political consultant more than being ignored. Rove is trying to re-establish himself as the premier GOP consultant.

It's not like the SOB got religion--his motivations are clear.
