When Karl Rove is saying your political ads have gone too far, you know you must be doing something dishonest.

The former Bush chief strategist, appearing on Fox News Sunday, said that John McCain had stretched the truth in his recent round of attacks against Barack Obama, in the process opening up the Arizonan to a round of effective counter-attacks.

"McCain has gone in his ads one step too far, and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100-percent-truth test," said Rove. "Both campaigns ought to be careful about... there ought to be an adult who says: 'Do we really need to go that far in this ad? Don't we make our point and get broader acceptance and deny the opposition an opportunity to attack us if we don't include that one little last tweak in the ad?'"

Watch:

McCain has received a heaping dose of criticism late this week for launching a series of advertisements that could be categorized as dishonest if not downright lies. The Obama camp, in a memo to reporters Sunday morning -- entitled a "Dishonorable, Dishonest Campaign" -- highlighted a number of these pieces. Joe Klein, of Time magazine called one spot the "sleaziest" he had ever seen. Paul Krugman of the New York Times, defined the episode as a "blizzard of lies." On Sunday, the St. Petersburg Times, ran an editorial entitled: "Campaign Of Lies Disgraces McCain," while the Chicago Tribune's Steve Chapman, wrote that "to McCain the truth is expendable."

That Rove would acknowledge truth in these complaints is somewhat remarkable. The man known as Bush's brain made a reputation of slinging mud at the opposition and waiting for it to stick.

But it should be noted, Rove's complaints with McCain's strategy was not that it had elicited the condemnation of groups like politifact or factcheck.org -- "You can't trust the fact check organization in all respect," he said. "They are human beings and individuals; they have got their own biases in there." Rather, he argued that by exaggerating so wildly, the Republican presidential nominee had opened himself up to political attacks.

"They don't need to attack each other in this way," he said. "They have legitimate points to make about each other."

UPDATE: Sure enough, the Obama campaign weighs in... gleefully.

"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove - the man who held the previous record - said McCain's ads have gone too far," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Although we might all take glee in hearing the Rove criticism of McCain, I am not sure this should be taken as the plus it appears to be. Other news agencies are reporting this as Rove criticism of both campaings (Obama and McCain) for sleezy campainging. What this is is cover for the McCain smear campaign -

"oh they all do it, I hate them all, Obama is just as bad as McCain, who cares who you vote for, at least McCain is war hero"

Sources inside the McSame campaign have confirmed that Rove is acting as a paid adviser (meaning he's running the show) to his former assistant who is officially running the McSame ad campaigns. But by stating his position as a "neutral" 3rd party, Rove gets to interject the idea that both campaigns are crossing the line, even though none of Obama's ads have been proven false or misleading. If there are any of you pubs who have a specific charge of lying on the part of the Obama campaign's ads, I'd love to hear about it. We know for a fact that McSame has been lying about his own record as well as about Obama's. Rove is a filthy little man - everyone should join me in calling, writing or emailing your Congressional Representative and demand that the Judiciary Committee follow through on their promise to hold Rove in Inherent Contempt for refusing to testify. If they don't do it now in this session - if they wait until after the election in November, Rove, Miers and Bolton and everyone else who has thumbed their noses at the Judiciary Committee and Congress as a whole will get off without consequence and the precedent that Congressional committees are powerless and may be ignored will be set.

Sam, in the end she was v. it. Unlike W Virginia's highways to nowhere and Massachusetts's 'Big Dig'. Also, Cook County in Illinois (where Obama lives) is the most corrupt county in America.

I think it's Rove's way of transmitting his fear that we're not going to sit idly by while they purchase the Presidency with Republican LIES. I think he's reading the handwriting on the wall. If not this election, the next. His time is drawing to a close. He'd do well to find a country without a extradition treaty with the U.S.

There are too many of us who know what's going on, and we can reinforce each others shared vision. Ultimately the truth will prevail.

Heh.

Rove was programmed to destroy McCain eight years ago.

Evidently, the program was never overwritten and remains active.

Heh, heh.

Great point, VicDaring! When the rats begin to desert the ship I think it means things are rotten beyond belief.

Where is Tim Russert when we need him to show McCain's own tapes to him on the air and call him and his campaign "The Liars Club" rather than "The Straight talk Express"!

"Don't believe anything dough boy says, he is doing this to make it seems like BO is also playing dirty".

Watch out for the next set of dirty ads that he will be orchestrating coming out soon, then he will say JMc has to put out those ads because BO made him do it. DON'T FALL FOR IT BO the man is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Awesome? Don't you know when you're being played like a cheap piano? Carl Rowe, himself is behind all of the negative ads and there is a method to his madness. Do not be hoodwinked into thinking he got religion overnight!

Rove is a scheming sc*mbag and this is just another one if his scheming antics....yeah right, he cares about "truth or consequences".

why isn't this slime behind bars wearing stripes with a chained-ball.

Personally, I think Rove would look better in stripes instead of orange.

Stripes are slimming. In orange he would look like a tangerine on growth hormones.

Rove realizes the Independents aren't as stupid or able to be herded as his Republican base. To bad John won't listen to reason, to bad for him.

Megan Kelly on Fox is going after Tucker Bounds about McCain's lies regarding Obama's tax policy and sex education training for K-12. Rove, and now Fox anchors are calling McCain's shills out on their lies? No doubt Fox will continue to carry the water for McCainPalin, but even a nanosecond of "fair and balanced" is better than nothing.
