When Karl Rove is saying your political ads have gone too far, you know you must be doing something dishonest.

The former Bush chief strategist, appearing on Fox News Sunday, said that John McCain had stretched the truth in his recent round of attacks against Barack Obama, in the process opening up the Arizonan to a round of effective counter-attacks.

"McCain has gone in his ads one step too far, and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100-percent-truth test," said Rove. "Both campaigns ought to be careful about... there ought to be an adult who says: 'Do we really need to go that far in this ad? Don't we make our point and get broader acceptance and deny the opposition an opportunity to attack us if we don't include that one little last tweak in the ad?'"

Watch:

McCain has received a heaping dose of criticism late this week for launching a series of advertisements that could be categorized as dishonest if not downright lies. The Obama camp, in a memo to reporters Sunday morning -- entitled a "Dishonorable, Dishonest Campaign" -- highlighted a number of these pieces. Joe Klein, of Time magazine called one spot the "sleaziest" he had ever seen. Paul Krugman of the New York Times, defined the episode as a "blizzard of lies." On Sunday, the St. Petersburg Times, ran an editorial entitled: "Campaign Of Lies Disgraces McCain," while the Chicago Tribune's Steve Chapman, wrote that "to McCain the truth is expendable."

That Rove would acknowledge truth in these complaints is somewhat remarkable. The man known as Bush's brain made a reputation of slinging mud at the opposition and waiting for it to stick.

But it should be noted, Rove's complaints with McCain's strategy was not that it had elicited the condemnation of groups like politifact or factcheck.org -- "You can't trust the fact check organization in all respect," he said. "They are human beings and individuals; they have got their own biases in there." Rather, he argued that by exaggerating so wildly, the Republican presidential nominee had opened himself up to political attacks.

"They don't need to attack each other in this way," he said. "They have legitimate points to make about each other."

UPDATE: Sure enough, the Obama campaign weighs in... gleefully.

"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove - the man who held the previous record - said McCain's ads have gone too far," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Who is this b*tch to say anybody's gone to far? He never told Bush he'd gone to far... nobody needs or wants Rove's perspective.

Rove is just trying to distance himself from the Stray Talk Express, which he has been pulling the strings of behind the curtain. The plan is obvious:

1) discredit the press so the people won't trust news sources
2) tell lots of lies so people tire of hearing the refutations
3) attack, attack, and act indignant when challenged, claim abuse
4) etc etc

Did you guys see the new Brave new films ad running this morning? I only caught the last of it, but it features a POW (not sure if he served with McStain) but this guy is questioning his temperament, and saying he doesn't trust him to POTUS! Can I just say from the little I saw...I loved it!

I saw it; it's really powerful. It deserves a wide, wide showing. The danger is that it could look "Swift-boatie," but the speaker is not in any way diminishing McCain's courage or patriotism--just talking about why it's not a good idea to elect him president.

Democrats are as prone as Republicans are to seeing only what they want to see. What’s Rove really saying?
“BOTH campaigns are making a mistake…”
“McCain has gone in some of his ads SIMILARLY [as Obama] a step too far…”
“THEY don’t need to attack EACH OTHER in this way…”

Four times in 30 seconds he blames BOTH sides when the fact is that McCain’s ads, in terms of untruth, have been egregious, blatant and sleazy beyond the pale when compared to the Obama ads which, technically speaking, have themselves taken some liberties with the truth. Rove has successfully equated small exaggerations to blatant lies. Now when people read headlines like “Blizzard of Lies” they will assume it is about both campaigns when in fact such stories that are now coming out in a flood are almost exclusively about the lies of the McCain campaign.

Rove is basically playing to a draw here, when, on this issue, the Democrats should have won public opinion hands down. The Obama campaign is helping the other side by playing up this clip which wrongfully castigates BOTH sides in equal measure.

Republican voters may (or may not) be stupid, but Republican strategists and campaigners are clearly smarter than their Democratic counterparts.

There's NOTHING HONORABLE about Karl Rove! If he suggests that this is the case, then he's doing it for a reason and the reason is to benefit McSame! I believe he realizes that Americans are sick of his type of gutter politics AND he figures McSame has gotten in his punches already and now that Obama is stepping up his attacks to counter McSame, he wants to call a truce before Obama nails him. Fortunately, Obama and Biden have been angered by his outright LIES and now will continue to attack him and his policies and intentions as well as his ties to George W. Bush. Palin will fade as a factor when the debates take place and Biden eats her for lunch. They have painted her as a reformer and product of change which will be shown to be another outright lie. Rove, the war has just begun and you started it.

Karl Rove has also advised the McCain Campaign. He is on McCain's campaign's pay role. I'm sure he put his stamp of approval on all of those sleazy add over the last few weeks. Now he is back peddling because it has just fired up the Democrats and Obama is counter punching. "Both sides have gone too far"..... give me a break.. McCain has used Rove since 3/08 on his campaign. He has promoted Steve Schmidt, a veteran of Bush 2004 campaign against Kerry to daily operations since July 2008. Peal back McCain's campaign and it is all operatives from "W". It is all McSame 2008.

Don't believe Rove's Bull for one minute...here is your pit bull and he doesn't give up and until he is won or driven into the ground...there is a method to this guy's madness....so be on the alert.

I think he's out front on those 527 (?) hit ads coming out that are probably so awful, he is trying to get some deniability. I am always laughing at these guys who RUN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY BEHAVING AS THOUGH THEY HAVE NO SAY IN WHAT IS GOING ON. Good Grief Charlie Brown,

So Rove is willing to throw all his friends and the GOP under the bus in a vain and desperate attempt to save his own hide ... republicans are always willing to "eat their own" for a bit of personal gain....

republicans are enemies of the United States.
