WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama raised $66 million in August, a record for a presidential candidate that illustrated his continuing appeal to donors and his robust outreach to new contributors.

The campaign said it raised the money with the help of more than a half million, first-time donors. By comparison, Republican presidential nominee John McCain raised $47 million in August, a personal best for his campaign as well. The monthly figures for both candidates were especially noteworthy because August is typically a slow month for fundraising.

Obama's totals, however, also underscore the challenge he faces in the remaining two months of the campaign. McCain, for now, has a significant advantage because he has accepted $84 million in taxpayer funds under a public financing system that Obama chose to bypass in favor of raising more money.

The combined efforts of the two campaigns and the two national parties left both candidates on nearly equal financial footing with about $94 million at the end of August, according to campaign and party officials who discussed the finances on Sunday.

Obama had $77 million in the bank at month's end, and the Democratic National Committee had $17.5 million.

McCain ended the month with about $18 million in cash, which he had to transfer to the Republican National Committee because of his decision to participate in the public finance system. The party committee had $76 million in the bank before the transfer. A party official said the party also had about $20 million in a joint fundraising committee and in special state party accounts that can be used to help McCain.

But McCain has a head start over Obama with the $84 million in federal funds. By accepting that money, however, he can no longer raise money for his campaign from donors and is limited to spending only that amount. As a result, any additional fundraising can only be done for the GOP.

Democratic fundraisers say Obama and the Democratic Party must do even better than their August totals to stay ahead of McCain and the well-heeled RNC. Obama and the DNC raised a combined total of more than $83 million, but fundraisers say their joint totals ahead should exceed $100 million a month.

McCain and the GOP have been able to stay essentially even with Obama and the Democrats through August because the RNC has had strong fundraising and low spending. The Democratic National Committee has had lower fundraising and higher spending.

In August, the RNC raised about $22 million, shy of its $26 million sum in July. The Democratic National committee reported raising $17.3 million in August, short of the $20 million raised in July.

Even though he can raise no more money for his campaign, McCain has placed his popular running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, on an aggressive fundraising schedule for the Republican Party. She has about one fundraiser every two days for the remainder of the campaign.

Obama has scheduled a series of fundraisers and has continued to make Internet and e-mail appeals his donors and supporters. The campaign reported that it raised $10 million in less than 24 hours this month, following Palin's address to the Republican National Convention.

Overall, Obama has raised more than $440 million for his presidential campaign, an unprecedented amount. The campaign said it has more than 2.5 million donors. McCain has raised $194 million.

"The 500,000 new donors to the Obama campaign demonstrate just how strongly the American people are looking to kick the special interests out and change Washington," campaign manager David Plouffe said in a statement.

McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said the announcement provides "66 million reminders that Barack Obama is willing to stray from reform, break his word to the American people and forgo public financing in favor of his own ambitions. Americans need change, not self-promotion."

McCain's campaign reported raising $10 million in the final days in August, a surge the campaign has attributed to Palin's selection as running mate.

Maybe McCain or Bush taught him how to use the internets to look up information.

Your error was in believing yourself capable of thought.

Obama said he would discuss public financing with the Republican nominee, and see if they could agree on a way to keep public financing viable.

McCain didn't agree to public financing until after Obama had concluded that there would not be any areas of agreement between the two campaigns.

He never committed to accepting it.

We knew the RNC was going to finance McCain anyway and the DNC was no contest for the Republican billionaires.

All of the hard earned dollars from people, alot of them who could use those dollars to pay for gas or other necessities, just show how many people know that Obama is their hope for the future. This is the first year I've ever donated to any candidate. We know that Obama wants what is best for us, for our country, and for the world. We can have great respect for him and how he has run his campaign. I don't think that the people voting for McPalin can say the same thing......they're in denial.

Your right their in denial. As I have said before I live in Michigan and am considered a "white middle class woman voter" (one of many of the categories the media has designed for this election), and again today politics was the talk around my dinner table ranging in all age groups and not one supporter of McCain, with more family and friends donating to Senator Obama since the Palin announcement. As one person said today, does it even matter to the Republicans that are supporting McCain/Palin that these candidates are out right lying? that should speak VOLUMES in how they would run this country.

Really? Wow!!

Then why is his campaign strapped for cash.

Why did his campaign not report these numbers by their required date?

Guess they had to wat for their master, George Soros, to step in & make up the deficit.

Having over $77 million on hand isn't "strapped for cash."

George Soros cannot---and does not---contribute to Obama's campaign.

Why do you tell such easily disproved lies?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:20 PM on 09/14/2008

Who said the campaign is strapped for cash? They have aggressive fundraising goals that they don't always meet, but that does not mean they're strapped for cash.

As for Soros, I'm sure he's donated the maximum amount he can to Obama but to say he made up any deficit is ridiculous when there is (a) a legal limit on how much an individual can donate to a campaign and (b) they are reporting half a million new donors.

I wouldn't donate a penny found on the street to the Unstabe/Unable (McCain/Palin) ticket!!

Good one...Unstable/Unable!

I donate weekly also.

I just wish that if McCain wins, we could directly charge those who voted for him for the $12 billion a month for the Iraq war. Anyone who can read should know that we cannot afford more of the same. We owe everyone! And we give the rich companies and the richest Americans a tax break... Just because people are poor doesn't mean they have to be stupid and believe the scary lies of the republicans. Read and think...then decide.

I live in a heavy Obama area, but today, there was more support than I'd ever seen. Everywhere I turned I saw somebody in an Obama t-shirt. While in the Bookstore, I passed by a political books table at the same time a young boy was passing by. He shouted "Look Mom, it's Barack Obama". His mom smiled at him with a sense of pride as my 2yr old heard him and also shouted B-rock Obama. I left the mall and stopped by a grocery store. I parked next to 3 other cars with with Obama 08 stickers on their cars (mine made 4) and the store was full of people with Obama t-shirts on also. I also travel outside of my neighborhood to take my daughter to swim practice and near the pool complex, nearly every house in site has an Obama sign in the yard. I write all of this to say - I think Obama is doing better a lot of the pundits and media would lead us to believe.

Oh...you're right on the money!!! I live in VA...southwestern VA, to be exact...a place that's never been known to vote Democratic except on local levels. I cannot recount how many times I've been stopped in the grocery store, at work , at the gas station, anywhere and every where by people (some much older than I and I'm a "younger" baby boomer) who want to talk about Obama and how excited they are about him and his campaign. My first clue to the change in attitudes in my beloved state was when he came to this portion of the state and the lines of people that would show up and stand and wait to hear him speak (even when he was late arriving). Needless to say, these were overflow crowds and those unable to get inside the venue were more than happy to listen to his speeches outside (sometimes in searing heat). We are all clearly and hopefully seeking much needed change!

I just made my first donation to the Obama-Biden campaign. I am not working very much (real estate appraiser-need say no more), so I couldn't make a big contribution. However, I plan to make a small weekly donation from this point on. It felt really, really good. I urge anyone who wants real change to make a donation & really be a part of the audacity of hope & change for this country. Rock on Obama.

Therefore, Real Estate Appraisers are responsible for the Bush Boom in the economy that he once bragged about - caused by his tax cuts..

You can't Blame the Appraisers.... For Appraisers the Market establishes the value and subsequent cost for real estate.

You are a true Republican ... blame everyone but yourselves for mucking things up so so badly.

Shame !

No they arent scared. While Obama got 66 million McCain has 84 million from government public financing. And he cannot accept money as freely as Obama can. So really we dont know how much McCain would have raised if he went the traditional route. Maybe less than Obama, maybe more. In any case, the people who gave Obama money could not give McCain money. So its apples and oranges... sort of.

Obama's ability to raise vast amounts of cash does not necessarily translate into a win in November. How he chooses to use the money is more important than the amount raised. Obama needs to deploy his troops on the ground in battleground states, and make every effort to register as many voters as possible and to educate them about legal voting and their constitutional right to vote and have their votes counted. Many potential voters need to know about, or be able to recognize, voter intimidation tactics at the polls, robo calls, push polling, and other different and sundry methods Republican operatives employ to significantly reduce the number of voters and the number of votes counted. Also, the votes of voters are expected to be flipped, dropped, and manipulated in a myriad of ways, and long lines, especially in urban neighborhoods, will result from malfunctioning voting machines and the intentional use of too few eminently hackable machines. Republicans can't win, because they are far too unpopular, unless they resort to cheating, but knowledgeable voters are much harder to exploit.
