She's been named as the highest-paid TV celebrity and one of the world's most powerful women, but American talk-show host Oprah Winfrey is also a big giver, topping a list of the 30 most generous celebrities for the second year running.

The second annual list, compiled by The Giving Back Fund, a group that seeks to encourage philanthropy, put Oprah in the top slot with The Oprah Winfrey Foundation and Oprah's Angel Network spending $50.2 million in 2007 on education, health care, and advocacy for women and children worldwide.

Just one of the things that I like about her:
she seems to understand that in order to have concern about children, you don't have to try to adopt them all and move them into your house. Someone who is truly RICH is much better off doing as Oprah has, and funding and/or founding institutions to help those in need. She has, for example, funded orphanages and schools. I do not have scorn for those celebrities who try to adopt and raise an orphan from every continent, but I think it would be so much more effective if they would concentrate on their professional work, and use their money for their good works. A few million dollars well placed, or in Oprah's case a few hundred million dollars well placed, will do a lot more good than adopting half a dozen orphans.

Sometimes we come across people who actually deserve what they have. Oprah is one of those people. Keep it up Orpah. It's in giving that we receive.

And this article I thought was so good I had to share it. I've been married for a while and people ask me how my husband and I get along. We are good financial partners outside our deep love and respect. Anyways, that's my personal note for the day....

Buckle up now, this will be a brutal, black monday on wall street!

I agree. Oprah's one of the few people whose personal wealth reflects her value as a human being.

Oprah's greatest gift has always been the hearth-felt honest caring and sharing of herself, enough said.

yeah, even if there are many tax benefits to her charitable donations, it's not like the money is being swindled. all the donations are all going to needy causes and helping people

When one has, it is easy to be generous. Then, when one has in abundance, it is prudent to give for tax purposes.

Except Oprah was born & raised with far fewer advantages in life than I was, & still she's given a million times more than I have. She even gives MUCH MUCH more than other rich celebs. Not only is she #1 on the list but no one else on the list even comes close to what she's given.

.

The point o the story of "The widow's mite" is still true.

The rich give far less per net worth than the poor.

"Trickle down" has never happened, it is now an oppressive bad joke.

Lots of public figures RAISE money, but Oprah actually backs it up by GIVING her OWN HARD EARNED money. She's given HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars to charity over the years notes Business Week, more than any performer in the history of show business. Not bad for someone who overcame poverty, illegitimacy, racism, sexism, weightism, sexual abuse, and teen pregnancy to get where she is. What an inspiration.

Not only is she the number one philanthropist she completely outdistances everyone else givng 5-6 times as much.

Don't ever watch her, don't always agree with her, but still continue to admire her.
