Palin

The AP reports:

About two hours after Palin's speech Saturday, hundreds of people protesting the policies of Palin lined a busy Anchorage street, waving signs and chanting "Obama!"

In addition to Obama supporters, the protesters included those who don't agree with Palin's positions against abortion, her support for the Iraq war and other issues. One woman held a sign that read, "I'm Bail'in on Palin!" Another said, "Pro Woman, Anti-Palin." Another read, "What About Healthcare?"

"We're not alone. A lot of people are worried about the nomination of Sarah Palin," said rally organizer Angie Doroff, 46, as cars drove by honking their horns in support.

A Daily Kos diarist has pictures and more information on the women who organized the rally.

Despite overcast skies and a forecast for rain, there was a rally here today. Oh man, was there! In fact, it was by most accounts the largest protest rally in the history of Alaska. The Anchorage Daily News wrote that the rally drew an "estimated" 1500 people. Let me be clear: the organizers used a hand-clicker and counted at least 1,483 Alaskans, mostly women, who showed up to say that Sarah Palin does not speak for them.

And here's video (scroll down for a slideshow):

Are we sure the crowd estimate was NOT over inflated? Naahh?! Wouldn't make sense...would it?

No, and if you look at all of the pictures, you'll see that people are close to the road, but the line of people goes on, out of sight. There are 1500 people.

Patrick, you're a McTool... The video and reports from major newspapers clearly show the validity of the crowd numbers... Rachel Maddow also reported today that McCain and Palin have been continually over-inflating the number of supporters for their rallies (something that isn't too difficult to verify independently.) How pathetic --there's pretty much no limit to what they will lie about is there?

Oh how I wish I'd been there... Anyone up for one of these in San Antonio?????? It would be good to make a lot of noise down here in Texas.

Someone said that they couldn't believe that people in Alaska would protest when Sarah Palin has an 80% approval rate. Well, that was a while back and the approval rating has dropped since then.
However, it has to be said that, of course, she's highly rated because she's been handing out money to Alaska residents like she's running a candy store. Anyone can do that to get people to like them. True leadership comes from making unpopular decisions for the well-being of a state or a nation - that takes more guts than it takes to hunt moose.
Palin is an ambitious woman who is out of her league, and McCain was fool enough to take her on, at the behest of the neocons who brought us 8 years of Bush and Cheney. Go figure......

McCain and Palin remind me in no small way of Hitler's rise to power. People, you better wake up!

Thanks, Betty Jean. I thought I was the only one that saw the similarities to what happened in Gemany in the early 30s; the people happily voting in a leader that will be responsible for their demise. Don't think it can't happen here.

Strangely though, Hitler was actually a good public speaker. These two suck. They really should ban speech-writers by the way.

Thank you, good and brave protesters in Alaska. You have started a movement of civil protesters that will meet McCain/Palin everywhere they speak in the lower 48. Eventually the Main Stream Media will no longer be able to cover up the growing anger and resentment evokeed by the cynical and out of touch republican candidates.

Someone mentioned below that Obama should campaign in Alaska. I'd love that -- certainly Obama or one of his key surrogates.

I liked the protest signs on the Youtube video. Some that stood out for me were:

Keep Your Laws Off My Body

Hockey Mama For Obama

Anti-Palin, Pro-Alaska

Bush Doctrine? (LOL)

So are Canadians! Here is a little something for you - FACT
An interesting tidbit about Sarah Palin's win in Alaska - according to wikipedia

A total of 238,307 votes were cast.

Of these, 122,625 went to a candidate other than Sarah Palin who got 114,697.

51.5% of Alaskan voters did NOT want Sarah Palin as Governor.

They had a Ralph Nader in the mix - otherwise, she may not be Governor today.

Copy and post these figures everywhere she goes

It just goes to show that every vote counts. Everyone should use their vote wisely. In Wyoming some elections for key seats were decided with less than 3 digit margins.
Add some poll corruption and it becomes real close!

Distortions... you can read the real article here:
http://www.adn.com/sarah-palin/story/525506.html

The only thing the Anchorage Daily News says about it is:
"Convention hall managers figured the Palin rally drew about 1,500 people. There was a big anti-Palin protest in Midtown Anchorage later in the day, but only a few protestors showed up outside Palin's morning rally."

So, if the head count didn't come from some blogger and the one and they didn't try to distort the truth from the one credible source it cites then I might give it a little more credibility.

I'd think if there were really 1500 people there that they'd get a little better photo of the crowd. The most I see in one photo is maybe 50-75 people. I understand sometimes it's hard to cram people in, but maybe a shot from a building or something. If you look close at some of the shots they are in the exact same area, only at different angles.
To get a better grasp on the situation you should try watching the Alaskan news online.

I am wandering why the 1,500 protesters in Alaska 2 hrs after Palins rally recieved no Media Press here in the States. I understand that it was 1,483 Alaska residents and the rest were from elsewhere.

I know once it is circulated in the mainstream Media it will be spinned in such a way to drum up sympathies for Governor Palin.

We can't let that happen. Each candidate for public office must hold up under the scrutiny when it is fairly applied.

Let us listen to what the Alaskin people are saying about their native daughter.

Wouldn't it be hilarious in a turn of events if McCain/Palin ticket lost Alaska in the General?

Oh wait, I just woke up.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would believe that a McCain/Palin ticket would lose Alaska when Sarah has an 80% approval rating.

What so many people don't understand is the connection this woman has made with all Americans, young, liberals, conservatives, women, men, old, and young.

With the Drive By Media continuing to try to slime her, more and more American's are joining her crusade for reform, something she's proven she can do in the largest state in the Union!

I love her and she puts Hillary to shame with her climb to the top on her own, not her husband and a huge Party creating her. She did it all by herself.

I am a guy who loves her and understands how hard it is for a woman to do what she has done and I hope she is opening the doors for more and more women who deserve better.

It's nice that we have a good sight to forward the truth!

80% approval rating in the largest state in the union?! Least populated I am sure you meant to say. Also....She and her husband were on board to secede from the Union.....
The media can't slam her because she won't come out of hidng. Would love to see the last 10 years of her tax returns.

All by herself? Two months ago, the VP spot wasn't even on her radar as far as I have seen. Sure she is ambitious (everyone in politics is), but let's not lie to ourselves. This VP choice was not Palin's idea--it was McCain and the Republican machine, craftily doing what they can to get our eyes off serious Republican failings. So, to say Palin has "climb[ed] to the top on her own" is the deepest kind of self-delusion. She's there because old rich white men put her there.

In order to distract the rest of us.

i found your comment to be disturbing....
Your giving props to a woman who "climbed to the top" where i stand it seems like she bullied, lied, abused power and her authority to get to the top. I don't think that is something to be proud of. That is NOT how i want to teach my daughter to succeed. also, as far as the largest state in the nation comment, Rhode island has 705 times more people per square mile than Alaska.

I am an Alaskan woman and I have not stopping hoping that we can have an upset here and Obama could actually win! But regardless of whether Obama wins the state or not, i know there are going to be a lot of people who do not vote McCain/Palin in this state. Not everyone here is 'in love' with our gov!

Something I haven't seen written has to do with the republican convention. When each state announced how their delegates voted, Alaska didn't support McCain 100%...despite Sarah being on the ticket. 5 delegates actually threw their votes to Ron Paul. So much for the Alaskan 'lovefest'! This is one of the reasons I continue to hold out hope that maybe Alaskans can get it together enough to surprise the country --- even if we only have 3 electoral votes to contribute, they would make a big statement.

'Not sure if it was mentioned earlier, but CNN reported that a local radio station gave out the home phone numbers of the protest organizers. Made for a tough day for some brave women.
