John McCain may want to refine his economic message a bit more during this potentially disastrous week for the financial sector.

On the campaign trail in Jacksonville, Florida, the Senator declared this morning that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong," despite what he described as "tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street."

The line may seem like GOP boilerplate, save for the fact that this morning, the McCain campaign released a television ad that began: "Our economy is in crisis." Moreover, with financial and job markets in disarray, and with Lehman Brothers, the troubled investment bank, filing for bankruptcy, it may not be the wisest political message to tell voters that the fundamentals are a-okay.

"You know," said McCain, "there's been tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street and it is -- people are frightened by these events. Our economy, I think, still the fundamentals of our economy are strong. But these are very, very difficult time. And I promise you, we will never put America in this position again. We will clean up Wall Street. We will reform government."

Many conservatives and McCain supporters have argued, against the prevailing sentiment, that despite Wall Street's failings, the economy is actually on firm footing. Donald Luskin, who described himself as "an adviser to John McCain's campaign," made such an argument in Sunday's Washington Post. But despite modest growth and relatively low unemployment rates, many economists see dire signs in today's economic landscape. On Sunday, former fed chairman Alan Greenspan said the market was the worst he had ever witnessed and predicted another major bank would close soon. Meanwhile, inflation is rising, real wages are declining, and the problems in the housing market persist.

McCain acknowledged, to various degrees, these topics in his Monday morning speech.

"I promise you we will never put America in this position again," McCain said. "This is a failure. We've got take every action to build an environment of robust energy supplies, lower inflation, control health care costs, access to international markets, low taxes and reduce burden of government to allow people to move forward toward a future of prosperity."

But his proclamation that the fundamentals of it all remained positive is surely music to Democratic ears.

UPDATE: Sure enough, Obama spokesman takes aim...

Today of all days, John McCain's stubborn insistence that the 'fundamentals of the economy are strong' shows that he is disturbingly out of touch with what's going in the lives of ordinary Americans. Even as his own ads try to convince him that the economy is in crisis, apparently his 26 years in Washington have left him incapable of understanding that the policies he supports have created an historic economic crisis.

And, an hour or so later, Joe Biden weighs in as well:

"John McCain has confessed, and I quote - I want to make sure I get it right - he said, it's easy for me to be in Washington and frankly be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have. Well, he's right. He's right. If all you do is walk the halls of power, all you'll hear is the wants of the powerful. Ladies and gentleman, I believe that's why John McCain could say with a straight face as recently as this morning, and this is a quote, the fundamentals of the economy are strong. That's what John said. He says that we've made great progress economically, in the Bush years. Ladies and gentlemen, I could walk from here to Lansing, and I wouldn't run into a single person who thought our economy was doing well, unless I ran into John McCain."

Who writes this stuff for him. He is way off base on this. Beer sales must be up. His number at http://www.boppoll.com just keeps going up. Now we know why. Sound? Yes that was a sound, Another company stock hitting the pavement like a grand piano going a hundred miles an hour.

I guess if I had a Sugar Momma, I would also think the Economy is strong. Or perhaps old age might cause me to think the same.

McCain sounds just like Bush. Palin is pandering about standing up to corporate greed.

Come on Repulicans own up to the clear resutts of your work. Phil Gramm, former Senator from Texas, who deregulated banking, now mega-millionaire LOBBYIST for the greedy, uncregulated, failing Banking Industry, is John McCain's pal and economic advisor.

This is the S&L scandal (remember Kettering?) and Enron all over again, only 100 times bigger.

This like neither. Both of your examples were based on deceptive practices. The problems in banking are about bad policies those companies set in trying to squeeze out a profit.

Puts me in mind of the song "We'd Like To Thank You Herbert Hoover" from Annie

[ALL]
Today we're living in a shanty
Today we're scrounging for a meal
[SOPHIE]
Today I'm stealing coal for fires
Who knew i could steal?
[MEN]
I used to winter in the tropics
[WOMEN]
I spent my summers at the shore
[FRED]
I used to throw away the paper--
[ALL]
We'd like to thank you: Herber Hoover
For really showing us the way
We'd like to thank you: Herbert Hoover
You made us what we are today

Prosperity was 'round the corner
The cozy cottage built for two
In this blue heaven
That you
Gave us
Yes!

We're turning blue!
They offered us Al Smith and Hoover
We paid attention and we chose
Not only did we pay attention
We paid through the nose.

In ev'ry pt he said "a chicken"
But Herbert Hoover he forgot
Not only don't we have the chicken
We ain't got the pot!
Hey Herbie

[WOMEN]
You left behind a greatful nation
[ALL]
So, Herb, our hats are off to you
We're up to here with admiration
[SOPHIE]
Come down and have a little stew
[ALL]
Come down and share some Christmas dinner
Be sure to bring the missus too
We got no turkey for our stuffing
We'd like to thank you, Herbert Hoover
For really showing us the way
You dirty rat, you Bureaucrat, you
Made us what we are today
Come and get it, Herb!

I've heard the same from GWB for the past eight years now. I bet it's on tape a thousand times. Someone should roll the tape in split screen for an Obama ad.

It’s the economy stupid!

Bush and his Republican cohorts at the helm of the good ship US of A, cavorting like drunken sailors as the ship runs aground, a direct result of the Bush's doctrine. when the Iraq war was waged to enrich the war profiteers at the detriment of the entire population, when the economy tanked, when the housing market crashed, when the banking system imploded, The Repugs were drunkenly steering the economy to rack and ruin unable or unwilling to right the vessel.

The Iraq war is costing $350million daily, and the US is in hock up to it's eyeballs to the Chinese. Why can't the delusional old fool McSame understand that him and Palin will only guarantee us four more years of the same debacle. No one but fools would ever leave these Repugs in charge ever again. "Fool me once, shame on ... shame on you. Fool me ... you can't get fooled agin."

Fox, Sean and Rush have their the GOP the "economy is strong" talking points that they are pushing. Did anyone see Sean's screamiong fit at an economist who dared to disagree w/ the GOP view. Amazing.

If McCain knows so much about solving problems why isn't her in Washington right now presenting bills, etc. to resolve this situation. How come we gotta wait until January? And what has stopped him for 26 years from taking care of these issues. Remember how he took care of the S&L crisis in the 1980s started by his good friend, Charles Keating? He took campaign contributions from Keating and went to bat in Congress and w/ regulators on behalf of Keating. The federal bailout cost taxpayers $2.6 billion. And for the little people who lost their lost their savings and homes. Zero.

Keating spent some time in prison and today he advises the McCain campaign.

We won the war in Iraq. The Iraqi military was defeated. The dictator was removed from office. A new government was formed and freely elected.

The economy is fine. GNP went up 3% last quarter. Unemployment is on the low-end historically.

After reading your posts for a while, Webmach, I am curious. Are you REALLY George W. Bush or are you just stupid? Oh wait, there is no difference.

Wasn't John McCain the 'economist who was in lock-step with George W. Bush proposal to privitize social security.

Those hockey moms might change their political affliliation.

Obama should hammer this with a sledgehammer!

People really need to vote on issues not race.

Anyone remember the Republicans' "Ownership Society". This was where Bush wanted to privatize Social Security. Another concept was to expand the Republican base by empowering more renters to become homeowners so they would vote Republican to protect their "ownership" position. The tool to bring this about-Sub Prime mortgages. Wall street marketed these bundled derivatives to the world markets on the assumption that home appreciation would be eternal. This was done for the high return on the inflated rates charged for these loans. No matter that the loans couldn't be repaid. That would be a problem for someone else .Hubris,Greed and Naivete. Traits that are present in nearly all things Republican.

If privatizing our retirement accounts is so a bad idea explain why the "Galveston experiment" works better than Social Security.

An Alzheimer's patient and a bull shooter? This is the best this country can do? Why not just hire gas pump clerks to fly our airplanes and apprentice plumbers to perform brain surgery?

Like Obama, Sen. McCain endorsed the Bush Admin's Bottomless Bank Bailout Madness. Both not-very-American candidates bought into speculator Soros' recent confrontation scenarios with Russia.

Neither McCain nor Obama is an American president--but both are American politicians beholden to British money.

$23 trillion in bank BankBailout dollars is a small price to pay for Wall Street's contributions to their corrupted campaigns, right?

Neither front-runner is worthy of the presidency. But we all knew that long ago.

Incredible/Shameful MSM! As McCain tried to clean up his "troubleshooting aspirations" for the economy, the MSM again gave him a major pass by constantly honing in on his afternoon comments as opposed to his weakling a.m. comments re: how "the economy is fundamentally sound".

What a complete jerk he is! But the MSM? Shameful for giving the pass & allowing this weak would-be
leader to regroup in the p.m. Because this is serious business and you continue to try to decide election 2008. How very scary you have collectively become.

And had it been OBAMA????
