John McCain may want to refine his economic message a bit more during this potentially disastrous week for the financial sector.

On the campaign trail in Jacksonville, Florida, the Senator declared this morning that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong," despite what he described as "tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street."

The line may seem like GOP boilerplate, save for the fact that this morning, the McCain campaign released a television ad that began: "Our economy is in crisis." Moreover, with financial and job markets in disarray, and with Lehman Brothers, the troubled investment bank, filing for bankruptcy, it may not be the wisest political message to tell voters that the fundamentals are a-okay.

"You know," said McCain, "there's been tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street and it is -- people are frightened by these events. Our economy, I think, still the fundamentals of our economy are strong. But these are very, very difficult time. And I promise you, we will never put America in this position again. We will clean up Wall Street. We will reform government."

Many conservatives and McCain supporters have argued, against the prevailing sentiment, that despite Wall Street's failings, the economy is actually on firm footing. Donald Luskin, who described himself as "an adviser to John McCain's campaign," made such an argument in Sunday's Washington Post. But despite modest growth and relatively low unemployment rates, many economists see dire signs in today's economic landscape. On Sunday, former fed chairman Alan Greenspan said the market was the worst he had ever witnessed and predicted another major bank would close soon. Meanwhile, inflation is rising, real wages are declining, and the problems in the housing market persist.

McCain acknowledged, to various degrees, these topics in his Monday morning speech.

"I promise you we will never put America in this position again," McCain said. "This is a failure. We've got take every action to build an environment of robust energy supplies, lower inflation, control health care costs, access to international markets, low taxes and reduce burden of government to allow people to move forward toward a future of prosperity."

But his proclamation that the fundamentals of it all remained positive is surely music to Democratic ears.

UPDATE: Sure enough, Obama spokesman takes aim...

Today of all days, John McCain's stubborn insistence that the 'fundamentals of the economy are strong' shows that he is disturbingly out of touch with what's going in the lives of ordinary Americans. Even as his own ads try to convince him that the economy is in crisis, apparently his 26 years in Washington have left him incapable of understanding that the policies he supports have created an historic economic crisis.

And, an hour or so later, Joe Biden weighs in as well:

"John McCain has confessed, and I quote - I want to make sure I get it right - he said, it's easy for me to be in Washington and frankly be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have. Well, he's right. He's right. If all you do is walk the halls of power, all you'll hear is the wants of the powerful. Ladies and gentleman, I believe that's why John McCain could say with a straight face as recently as this morning, and this is a quote, the fundamentals of the economy are strong. That's what John said. He says that we've made great progress economically, in the Bush years. Ladies and gentlemen, I could walk from here to Lansing, and I wouldn't run into a single person who thought our economy was doing well, unless I ran into John McCain."

Maybe, it would be more effective for the Obama campaign to draw a clear distinction between the Democratic and Republican Party as oppose to John MC Cain and George Bush. This is important because George Bush is not solely responsible for this fiasco but the puppet masters who work through this party to achieve their goals.

The primary directive of the Republican Party is based on the theory of “Laissez Faire”, which has now been proven to be a failure during the last eight years. De-regulation and the absence of accountability safeguards are breeding ground for greed and corruption. Capitalism without a moral compass does not work.

The Republican Party lacked forward thinking and wisdom in spending the euphoric capital “That We Are All Americans” which was echoed throughout the international community after the 911 attacks. Their misguided ideas and the absence of a “just vision” resulted in leading our nation into an unjust and ill-advised war. Where is outraged of the shedding of innocent blood (Men, Women, Children, Mothers, Fathers, etc).

In the 2004 presidential election the republicans continued to support and campaign for their candidate and promised the American People things would be better instead what we have gotten is more failure and broken promises and out right LIES.

Now for the third time during this 2008 presidential election, the republicans are asking you to believe them again. Quite frankly, it is insulting that they think so little of us.

This is good. Nothing better than a good politician with FIM (Foot In Mouth). Did see how fast the wrinkly old man back peddled ? My 7 year old son asked "Why is he lying ?". I said that what comes with 26 years of experience turned to desperation (honesty and integrity be damn). He said "Oh ...he's not a nice man" .

Out of the mouth of babes ...

McCain has outright admitted that he doesn't understand economics. Sure he can have good advisors but is this a person who is a good choice for president at this crucial time. NO, NO, NO!!!!! Then we have Palin, wonder if she can even balance her checkbook??? Please my fellow Americans, think carefully about who you vote for this November!!!!!

"Good advisers". Like Palin, Lieberman, Phil Gramm and Steve Schmidt/ Karl Rove.

The thought of a McCain / Palin presidency should send chills down the spine of every one with any intelligence or morality at all.

Sorry, but these people will absolutely be worse than Bush & Cheney.

I'll say it once, I'll say it twice, you people better listen:
Dear Publius:
Senator McCain may be running a Campaign to win but Arizona Politics won't ever win the Presidency. If I'm not mistaken, he has centered his offices in Arlington, VA 22215 with Governor Kaine's successful economy. Arizona is 49th in the Union(9-11-08 AP News) for job growth. Arizona is rated the Dumbest in Business (9-13-07 AZ Republic) and employment prospects are poor for the intelligent. Senator McCain appears to be distancing himself from people in Arizona that are less than a two of a kind leading Business and Industry. Politically Senator McCain wants new life and he's out of Arizona heading toward Alaska like a friend drilling on the Brooks Range.

Deregulation, off-shore hidden accounts, using terms to obscure the true
nature of a transaction, CEO's that take a million dollar bonus and tell their
employees their jobs are secure, all of these and more cause Black Monday.
About a year ago, some brave economists tried to warn people that all the
melt-downs that did happen, would indeed hapeen, if the White House
failed to pay attention. No one has been allowed to use the word "recession"
but what else is it? Jobs have disappeared, taking with them our ability to
support the economy by shopping, and without a house it seems dumb to
buy that new car. So, how far do we spiral down from here?

Saw the clip of McGoofy's speach. He sounded like a dawdering old fool, who had no idea what he was reading. His "advisors" have him so bamboozled he doesn't know what he thinks anymore.

A vote for McCain is a vote money lobbiest!

John McCain said this very morning, "The fundamentals of the economy are good."
Barack Obama replied to that statement, "Whose economy is John McCain talking about?!"

McCain then bactracked and claimed that by "fundamentals" he meant American workers. Then he tried to make it seem that by criticizing McCain's comments, Obama is casting aspersions against the American worker

Can you imagine the hubris of McCain... and the fact that the MSM is not calling him out on this?

And so, John McCain, having sold his soul to the Devil many months ago....

This act of trying to cover his tracks is the single most obvious example of his own lack of knowledge, his willingness to lie and probably a very confused and declining mind.

How he could go out later and read from some cards given to him by his team of assassins is totally pathetic and extremely revealing.

The importance of this was lost on many media people initially, but I think it will come back to haunt him soon. Rachel and Keith caught it, but even they didn't quite get the significance of this. I think he is really falling apart now and finally has shown that he is not worthy of being elected, in this single act.

wonder if John McCain has ever felt the effects of a struggling economy?

McCain says "We've got take every action", but not provide insight as to the action "He" would take as president to address the problem. It's easy to say that "We" should do something to fix the economy, or the war on terrorism, or education, etc. However, without a proposal that identifies the outcome McCain anticipates--together with estimates of the risks/costs, how he would fund his solution, the infrastructure, and resource requirements, etc.--McCain's "We've got take every action" statement is worthless.

"Many conservatives and McCain supporters have argued, against the prevailing sentiment, that despite Wall Street's failings, the economy is actually on firm footing."

Well, the CONs said the same thing during the Great Depression, so what do you expect? Reality and right-wingers have a nodding acquaintance at best.

Exactly.... quote recheck please:

"The economy is essentially strong." Herbert Hoover
"The fundamentals of the economy are good." John McCain

Right you are! And if Obama/Biden don't start pinning the Hoover label on McC at every opportunity, they'll be missing a sure bet.

The name and reputation of Hoover still resonates with a lot of people, even Republicans, ha ha.

Tried google couldn't find your Hoover quote. Do you have a link? Found these...

” I say that the fundamentals of our economy are strong.” -- George W. Bush, September 20 2007

“The fundamental business of the country, is on a sound and prosperous basis.” -- Herbert Hoover, October 25, 1929, (four days before Black Tuesday)

this is more of the mc same...what needs to be addressed is the recent 1 million absentee ballots the mc same campaign sent out to the voters, which by the way, are invalid, due to the fact that they printed an extra voting box, for some unknown reason!!!
more voter fraud is not good for America...the fact that they are reduced to making up deliberate lies about the competition instead of fighting on the issues that face us is only proff that they will have to stoop to conquer rather than rise above, to win this election.

Absolutely. We should all write to the Obama campaign to make sure they are on this. This is a major attack on Democracy in this country.

This was no accident and needs to be exposed. The pieces are finally falling together in a way that everyone can understand.
