John McCain may want to refine his economic message a bit more during this potentially disastrous week for the financial sector.

On the campaign trail in Jacksonville, Florida, the Senator declared this morning that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong," despite what he described as "tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street."

The line may seem like GOP boilerplate, save for the fact that this morning, the McCain campaign released a television ad that began: "Our economy is in crisis." Moreover, with financial and job markets in disarray, and with Lehman Brothers, the troubled investment bank, filing for bankruptcy, it may not be the wisest political message to tell voters that the fundamentals are a-okay.

"You know," said McCain, "there's been tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street and it is -- people are frightened by these events. Our economy, I think, still the fundamentals of our economy are strong. But these are very, very difficult time. And I promise you, we will never put America in this position again. We will clean up Wall Street. We will reform government."

Many conservatives and McCain supporters have argued, against the prevailing sentiment, that despite Wall Street's failings, the economy is actually on firm footing. Donald Luskin, who described himself as "an adviser to John McCain's campaign," made such an argument in Sunday's Washington Post. But despite modest growth and relatively low unemployment rates, many economists see dire signs in today's economic landscape. On Sunday, former fed chairman Alan Greenspan said the market was the worst he had ever witnessed and predicted another major bank would close soon. Meanwhile, inflation is rising, real wages are declining, and the problems in the housing market persist.

McCain acknowledged, to various degrees, these topics in his Monday morning speech.

"I promise you we will never put America in this position again," McCain said. "This is a failure. We've got take every action to build an environment of robust energy supplies, lower inflation, control health care costs, access to international markets, low taxes and reduce burden of government to allow people to move forward toward a future of prosperity."

But his proclamation that the fundamentals of it all remained positive is surely music to Democratic ears.

UPDATE: Sure enough, Obama spokesman takes aim...

Today of all days, John McCain's stubborn insistence that the 'fundamentals of the economy are strong' shows that he is disturbingly out of touch with what's going in the lives of ordinary Americans. Even as his own ads try to convince him that the economy is in crisis, apparently his 26 years in Washington have left him incapable of understanding that the policies he supports have created an historic economic crisis.

And, an hour or so later, Joe Biden weighs in as well:

"John McCain has confessed, and I quote - I want to make sure I get it right - he said, it's easy for me to be in Washington and frankly be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have. Well, he's right. He's right. If all you do is walk the halls of power, all you'll hear is the wants of the powerful. Ladies and gentleman, I believe that's why John McCain could say with a straight face as recently as this morning, and this is a quote, the fundamentals of the economy are strong. That's what John said. He says that we've made great progress economically, in the Bush years. Ladies and gentlemen, I could walk from here to Lansing, and I wouldn't run into a single person who thought our economy was doing well, unless I ran into John McCain."

O.K. everybody. It is laughable that now McCain says he wants to REFORM regulation. Reform???? How about having MORE regulation. The lack of it is what got us into this ditch. REFORM??? You can't REFORM something that is non-existent to begin with.

Somehow, the more I hear McCain talk , the more I fear he is becoming demented. He lives and talks in the past, his ideas are outdated, he just doesn't seem to be up with the current times...so how can he fix this country???
.Is Palin going to fill in for him with her goofy religion making sure we fail as a country and go back to the dark ages where religion and hippocracy rule? Where has religion ever brought good government? Its all about controlling the masses in exchange for power.
You want a fundamentalist regime?, go live in Aphghanistan or Saudi Arabia, but leave my country alone!
I dont reccommend either MCCain or Palin,; both rotten eggs.already smelling bad!!!
OBama is still our best bet!

By his own admission he says he doesn't know much about economy... and now we're to take comfort when he assures us that it is fundamentally strong? What a pea brain...

McCain and the Republicans just don't get it, do they.
What is still strong is the pack of lies they're trying to ram down the throat of the American people, with considerable success I must add, considering the incredible gullability of at least 49% of it.

I find it utterly frustrating that the Obama camp isn't more forcefull and direct in pointing out this hogwash at every opportunity, in every speech, in every advertisement.

McCain and the Republicans have clearly decided that they will lie, cheat and b.s their way to victory in November. And why shouldn't they - they've been succesfull in 2000,2002,2004 and to a lesser degree in 2006. The only way to stop this criminal enterprise we have endured for the past 7 years is for Obama and the Democrats to be clear, direct and forcefull in pointing this b.s. out to the American voter.
The Republicans may still steal the election as they have in the paast, but at least this time there's a better chance that enough people will be angry enough to take to the streets anbd take our country back. Enough already.!!!

My one wish would be to see John and Cindy McCain be in a financial position (really lack of) to have to stand in the soup line!

Hey, I wouldn't care if she was wearing that $300,000 dress.

I don't want for anything more than that!!

Pleeeeeze!!

The trouble is John McCain, the Republicans, and the lobbyists they are beholding to have caused this economic crisis. Their policies of deregulation, huge tax cuts for the very wealthy and corporate welfare for companies making record profits have led to us into this pit. The idea that the people who put us into this mess understand the change necessary to get us out would be laughable except this is too serious a moment to laugh.

You don’t send the fox back into the hen house to clean up the mess he created!

OK everyone, an entire discussion on one of the news shows, expressed the need for Obama (who has an economic advantage) to come up with a one liner such as "Are you any better now than..." expression. We need to help Obama since he hasn't come up with one himself except for "Enough' which he doesn't use enough (no pun). Maybe a combo of one that was on the show "Enough, you've blown it, don't ask for 8 more years! ....Enough, you've blown it don't ask for 8 more years....Enough, you've blown it don't ask for 8 more year!...Has a nice ring to it! Pass this one or come up with one and pass it on. One of them has to stick!!!

Has anybody been watching CNN? Lou Dobbs has the unmitigated gall to blame both the Democrats and the Republicans for this economic meltdown. Except for the Clinton Adminsitration the Republicans have been in charge for the last 40 years. The Republicans have been pushing dereguation as their primary objective. It started with Reagan saying that "Governement was not the solution. Government is the problem." Then came the S&L meltdown and the Republican's mantra was "there was blame enough to go around" Not this time. This meltdown was the handiwork of the Republican obsession with deregulation. This economic implosion is all the Republican party's fault. Man up Reeps this baby is no orphan she is your love child.

So John McCain thinks that our financial markets are "fundamentally strong." Pretty interesting comment coming from a guy that was a key player and integral part of "The Keating Five."
