John McCain may want to refine his economic message a bit more during this potentially disastrous week for the financial sector.

On the campaign trail in Jacksonville, Florida, the Senator declared this morning that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong," despite what he described as "tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street."

The line may seem like GOP boilerplate, save for the fact that this morning, the McCain campaign released a television ad that began: "Our economy is in crisis." Moreover, with financial and job markets in disarray, and with Lehman Brothers, the troubled investment bank, filing for bankruptcy, it may not be the wisest political message to tell voters that the fundamentals are a-okay.

"You know," said McCain, "there's been tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street and it is -- people are frightened by these events. Our economy, I think, still the fundamentals of our economy are strong. But these are very, very difficult time. And I promise you, we will never put America in this position again. We will clean up Wall Street. We will reform government."

Many conservatives and McCain supporters have argued, against the prevailing sentiment, that despite Wall Street's failings, the economy is actually on firm footing. Donald Luskin, who described himself as "an adviser to John McCain's campaign," made such an argument in Sunday's Washington Post. But despite modest growth and relatively low unemployment rates, many economists see dire signs in today's economic landscape. On Sunday, former fed chairman Alan Greenspan said the market was the worst he had ever witnessed and predicted another major bank would close soon. Meanwhile, inflation is rising, real wages are declining, and the problems in the housing market persist.

McCain acknowledged, to various degrees, these topics in his Monday morning speech.

"I promise you we will never put America in this position again," McCain said. "This is a failure. We've got take every action to build an environment of robust energy supplies, lower inflation, control health care costs, access to international markets, low taxes and reduce burden of government to allow people to move forward toward a future of prosperity."

But his proclamation that the fundamentals of it all remained positive is surely music to Democratic ears.

UPDATE: Sure enough, Obama spokesman takes aim...

Today of all days, John McCain's stubborn insistence that the 'fundamentals of the economy are strong' shows that he is disturbingly out of touch with what's going in the lives of ordinary Americans. Even as his own ads try to convince him that the economy is in crisis, apparently his 26 years in Washington have left him incapable of understanding that the policies he supports have created an historic economic crisis.

And, an hour or so later, Joe Biden weighs in as well:

"John McCain has confessed, and I quote - I want to make sure I get it right - he said, it's easy for me to be in Washington and frankly be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have. Well, he's right. He's right. If all you do is walk the halls of power, all you'll hear is the wants of the powerful. Ladies and gentleman, I believe that's why John McCain could say with a straight face as recently as this morning, and this is a quote, the fundamentals of the economy are strong. That's what John said. He says that we've made great progress economically, in the Bush years. Ladies and gentlemen, I could walk from here to Lansing, and I wouldn't run into a single person who thought our economy was doing well, unless I ran into John McCain."

Headlines read: "McCain On 'Black Monday': Fundamentals of Our Economy Are Still Strong," and Bush says "Economy Strong Enough to Handle Turmoil."

I guess if you have MILLIONS or BILLIONS, you really don't see the problems of every-day, hard working folk. And these are the people some would like to put back in the White House? WHY! Have you people lost your minds.

Yesterday, while out stumping all McCain kept on say is "My friends, we are going through tough times." What in the hell does he know about "touch times." Tough times for him is when his pilot oversleeps or his driver doesn't pick him up on time. Why anyone in their right mind would ever consider McCain and Palin is beyond me.

So what? Americans are so dumb, they'd rather pay attention to the he said/she said name calling and labels like "elitist" and "hockey mom" and not have to think about complicated issues like investment banks and stock markets.

Please tell me how "the fundamentals of our economy are strong," despite what he described as "tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street.".

Talk about double-speak!

Either the fundamentals of our economy is strong

or

There is tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and on Wall Street.

It is impossible to be both.

I hope this is one shock that does not allow the Republicans slip in their agenda. That book should be required reading for everyone in this country. What an eye-opener!

My local newspaper has daily letters to the editor, many from ministers, urging folks to register because the "nature of marriage is in question". Personally I don’t think the current model, one man/one woman at a time, is so great.

The fear that they will loose control is clear in their appeals, “Do something, or people who are not like us, will be in charge.” I will try to listen carefully on Election Day to what I can hear as the fabric of America is torn asunder.

Fundamentalists would rather lose their own job than let some people they don't know get married.

JONATHAN SIMON cont'd.

..."In 2004, the 12:22am National Exit Poll (NEP) had a 38/35 Democrat/Republican Party ID mix. Kerry won the 12:22am NEP by 51-48%.The mix was changed to 37-37 in the Final NEP to force a match to the recorded vote; Bush won by 51-48%. Likewise, the Gore/Bush “Voted 2000” weights were changed from 39/41 to 37-43 in the Final. The election was stolen. Bush was the official winner by 50.7- 48.3% with 286 EV. The Final Exit Polls were adjusted accordingly.

The “dead heat” claimed by pollsters, bloggers and the media is a canard- unless they are factoring fraud into their models and not telling us. The media desperately wants a horserace and so they fail to adjust the polls for undecided and newly registered voters. They avoid McCain’s gaffes, flip-flops and plagiarisms while he supports the most unpopular president in history.

In a true democracy, this election would be a slam dunk. Obama needs a massive voter registration effort to overcome the fraud."

The more the economy goes down the tubes, the better for obama. I don't wish harm on no one, esp. someone to lose their job -- I've been there too many times. But John McC doesn't "get" it? He just doesn't get it.

If this this is what McCain believes it proves he doesn't care about the American people and NOT QUALIFIED TO RUN FOR THE PRESIDENCY. What does he care, his wife is worth over $100 mIlion, they own several homes and whatever else.

McCain is either losing his marbles or has already lost them.

Indie2008-- his polls are NOT going up! Don't be fooled, my fine people! They are being manipulated to make a McCain victory (a statistical impossibility) more paletable in November. Here is a phenominal explanation from renoun election expert/ statistician JONATHAN SIMON (Founder/ Election Defense Alliance). In my experience tracking his numbers, he has never been wrong. He says:

"There has been much discussion regarding the recent McCain “surge” in the national polls.

Most of the national and state polls are sponsored by the corporate MSM. That’s one reason why the Democratic poll numbers will always understate the True Vote.

http://www.geocities.com...el/2008ElectionModel.htm

The national polls indicate a close race. The National 5-poll projection model is a virtual tie. But Obama leads the State Monte Carlo simulation model by 51.9-48.1% with 315 expected electoral votes.

Some national polls increased Republican sample Party ID which increased McCain’s poll numbers. Recall that the 2004 and 2006 Final National Exit Polls weightings were adjusted to match the recorded vote miscount. But all category cross-tabs had to be changed, not just Party ID. Of course, the Final Exit Poll (state and national) is always matched to the recorded vote even though it may be fraudulent – as it was in 2000, 2004 and 2006. This cannot be emphasized enough. Say it loud again and again..."

Boy, it is great to get a correct perspective on the false polls. I am sending your comment to everyone I know who is beginning to be down in the mouth about all the hoopla regarding '"McCain being ahead in the polls and in the electoral votes".

It will put a spring in their steps and give them renewed hope and the stamina needed to get out there and work our butts off to get Obama in office (the legal way!!)

I am taking a vacation day on election day and will be a poll watcher. However, in my state, I don't expect any of the finagling that will go on in PA, Ohio, Virginia, etc.

YES WE CAN!!

AND YES WE WILL!

Now, lets get our behinds out there and work, work, work. If Obama can work as hard as he is doing, we can certainly put in 2% to help, don't you think?

And don't forget to donate!!

Another reason to keep hope alive is that 10,000,000+ new voters have not been contacted by polsters. They aren't on the records yet. Add to that number the people who no longer have land lines.

Barack Obama is the second biggest recipient of political money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the last ten years. And he’s only been in Washington for four.

Cuban Pete. Have you EVER made a donation to a political candidate? EVER?

Well, guess what. When you make that donation, you must state what company you work for and what your job title is.

Is there any reason why employees of Fannie Mae and Freddie MAC should not be allowed to donate to the candidate of their choice?

After all, when donates are shown by company name, it does NOT mean that the company in itself made the donation, but the employees own individual donation - you know, a right that is afforded by our Constitution?

Climb down off your stumpy soapbox, slink away and go back to Mommy and cry cause somebody called you out on your bull.

When any news person have a McCain supporter on any show, it is the duty of the person to ask "Do YOU think the economy is sound?"

At least that will be fun to watch.

Today's crash will make McCain's position a lot weaker. By insisting that the economy is strong while millions suffer, he shows he is out of touch. He has already admitted that he knows nothing about the economy, making him hardly the ideal candidate at this critical time. How could he tell his voters: "The Republicans got us into this terrible mess; therefore vote Republican ?"

Chris Matthews show today. WHY does that man think he's so well versed on all subjects that he lettings a repub. McCain backer (don't have her name) go on and on about how Obama will raise taxes?
TOO FRUSTRATING! I wrote to him and suggested he go to the new website detailing McCain's lies.
Chris can be so effective - but today he acted like he was on ritalin! He interrupted everyone - UNTIL
they made the false accusations about Obama tax increases - to which he replied three times HMMMM!
