Palin Tanning Bed

Al Giordano of Narco News first reported that Sarah Palin has a tanning bed installed in the Alaska Governor's Mansion:

"The governor did have a tanning bed put in the Governor's Mansion," Roger Wetherell, chief communications officer of Alaska's Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, confirmed to this newspaper. "It was done shortly after she took office [in early 2007] and moved into the mansion."

Ben Smith of the Politico confirmed the report.

"She paid for it with her own money," Wetherell told Smith in an email.

UPDATE: US Weekly has more:

According to Wetherell, the tanning bed was purchased used, from a health club.

Tanning beds can cost up to $35,000 to install in a home - not including the cost of parts, Color Me Tan manager Erin Weise told the Narco News.

"I don't think it's normal for people to have a tanning bed in their house, " Wiese, who is based in Fairbanks said. "It's expensive."

Palin's running mate, presidential candidate John McCain battled skin cancer in 1993, and again in 2000.

"I coat SPF 30 on myself first thing in the morning, and wear long sleeves and a hat whenever I'm in the sun," McCain has told Newsweek.

Palin declared May 2007, "Skin Cancer Awareness Month." In the press materials it was noted, "Skin cancer is caused, overwhelmingly, by over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and from tanning beds."

Unless all of us start to demand that this woman hold a press conference or 2 we could possibly elect a complete unknown to the most important job in the world.

Why is no one talking about this....... why is no one demanding this?

ANY job I ever had I was required to have at least one interview sometimes more.

I guess I don't understand why she had the tanning bed installed in the Governor's mansion. If I read the reports correctly, she spent most of her time in either Anchorage or Wasilla.

Who cares? She is just another self-centeredrepublican trying to be younger than she is. Fits well with mccain who has the same thoughts every day. Forget her and get back on the real issues.

As a former employee of a dermatologist, I ask how she can set such an example for our young people? The rate of melanoma has skyrocketed in numbers pertaining to young women in our country.
This is just asinine!

assinine it is. One of my ex employees liked to tan 3x per day. She looked like she was atleast 100, but in her mind she was "super fine". Under blacklight she is almost all sun damage.

It's like having someone mow your yard, then pay to belong to a gym.

Wow. What totally hypocritical behavior in her part. She has a tanning bed installed to maintain a tanned appearance, accentuating her "hot" looks, I assume. Then, her supporters at the Republican convention wear buttons touting her "hot" appearance. Finally, when any Democratic critics dare to mention her "hot" looks, then the Republicans scream that the Democrats are being sexist. Whatever...

The main point is the neocons screeched over Edwards' $400 haircut. This is a similar issue of credibility.

Also, Palin has a tanning bed installed in the AK gov. mansion at what probably cost 5 figures easily. If she got more than a $150 discount in deferance to her position as Governor, that is a bald violation of Alaska's tough ethics laws.

Yes, no kidding there are bigger issues, but this fits the pattern of Palin's sense of self-importance and entitlement, a la Edwards.

There are so many other, more important issues to get into it with Gov Palin, that I feel this was a wasted opportunity. She likes a tan. So what?

If Palin really paid for the Tanning Bed with Her own Money, It wasn't worth reporting on.

However I will say this; I don't see why Palin needed a Personal tanning Bed, Didn't She get enough radiation from the Northern Lights......And isn't Her mind fried enough already....

Should John Kerry going wind surfing rate any notice? We live in a nuanced world of surface appearances and gossip. Nuanced thinking America is not so great at, but tiny cultural signals about what we consume matter to voters. Good work Huff Post. We don't need to lie like them but we do need to keep our eyes open to silly truths. We live in silly times.
