Sarah Palin have released e-mails detailing what they say is the real reason she dismissed Walt Monegan, the public safety commissioner whose firing prompted the "Troopergate" controversy. ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin is unlikely to speak with an independent counsel hired by Alaska lawmakers to review the firing of her public safety commissioner, a spokesman for Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Monday.

Spokesman Ed O'Callaghan said he has not spoken with Palin, but she was "unlikely to cooperate" with the inquiry "as long as it remains tainted."

Democrats charged that the McCain campaign was trying to stall the investigation.

"The partisan presidential campaign of McCain/Palin has interfered and is picking partisan targets to smear in order to make this investigation look like something it isn't," said Patti Higgins, chairwoman of the Alaska Democratic Party. "Rather than cooperating with the investigation, the Republican presidential campaign is doing everything it can to stall and smear."

O'Callaghan also said he did not know whether Palin's husband, Todd, would challenge a subpoena issued Friday to compel his cooperation. Thomas Van Flein, the Palins' lawyer, who has accepted service of the subpoena, did not return messages seeking comment. The governor herself has not been subpoenaed, but the Legislature's investigator, Steve Branchflower, has said he hopes to speak with her.

Palin and her husband campaigned Monday in Colorado and Ohio. Palin also planned appearances Tuesday in Ohio.

McCain's campaign insists the investigation into the firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan has been hijacked by Democrats.

Palin initially said she welcomed the inquiry. But after she became McCain's running mate on Aug. 29 her lawyer sought to have the three-member state Personnel Board take over the investigation, alleging that public statements by the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Democratic state Sen. Hollis French, indicated the probe was politically motivated.

French said Sept. 2 that the results of the investigation could constitute an "October surprise" for the McCain campaign. He later apologized for the remark, but Palin's lawyer has said the biased impression it created can't be undone.

The McCain campaign says it can prove Monegan was fired in July because of insubordination on budget issues, and not because he refused to fire a state trooper who went through a nasty divorce from Palin's sister.

To that end, the campaign released a series of e-mails detailing the frustration several Palin administration officials experienced in dealing with Monegan. The "last straw," the campaign said, was a trip Monegan planned to Washington in July to seek federal money for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases.

In a July 7 e-mail, John Katz, the governor's special counsel, noted two problems with the trip: the governor hadn't agreed the money should be sought, and the request "is out of sequence with our other appropriations requests and could put a strain on the evolving relationship between the Governor and Sen. Stevens."

Monegan was fired four days later.

In the weeks since, it has emerged that the Palins and her staff repeatedly had contacted Monegan expressing their dismay at the continued employment of Trooper Mike Wooten, who divorced Palin's sister in 2005. The following year, Wooten was suspended for five days based on complaints filed by the Palins, including that he drank in his patrol car, used a Taser on his 10-year-old stepson and illegally shot a moose.

A bipartisan panel of the Legislature voted unanimously to authorize an investigation into the circumstances of Monegan's firing.

In an effort to move the investigation into the Personnel Board's court, Van Flein filed a complaint there. But on Monday, he asked the board to dismiss the matter, citing the e-mails about budget issues as proving the real reason for Monegan's dismissal.

"The Governor decided to replace Mr. Monegan based on his refusal to execute her administration's policy on fiscal and budget matters, a refusal that between late 2007 and the middle of 2008 blossomed into outright insubordination."

Monegan's attorney said he had no immediate comment.

Also made clear in the e-mails is that some Palin staffers believed Monegan worked outside normal channels in making budget requests, in one case writing a letter to the governor in support of a funding for a project she had already vetoed.

If Wooten did what he is accused of, he should have been prosecuted for it since he would have been breaking the law by committing child abuse. The investigation conducted regarding his actions determined that his guilt was not clearly defined concerning the child abuse allegations (palin's sister said in court he never physically harmed her or her children) and he was lightly disciplined for his admitted transgressions (shooting a moose cow without a valid hunting permit). He endured the punishment and that should have been that. It obviously was not enough for mrs. palin, she wished for a little extrajudicial punishment. The Palins tried to take away his livelihood, thus affecting his ability to care for his children, which could sway a judge's decision regarding custodial rights regarding his kids.
Molly was not the one making all of the phone calls and complaints, sarah and todd were...it just seems like a personal vendetta by a nasty pair of righteous relatives.
Anyone who has been through a nasty divorce, can you imagine how it might have gone down had your sister in-law been the person who signed your paychecks?

Didn't she say she wanted to be held accountable?

Someone must have told her that's an inappropriate stance for a Republican VP.

No, like all Republicans, she wants everybody else held accountable. It should be obvious by now, Republicans and the right want to make the rules, not follow them.

HER CAMPAIGN IS FRIGHTENINGLY R O V I A N !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course Queen Sarah won't cooperate in the Alaskan legislature's investigation. Just like Bush, Cheney, Libby, Rove, etc. they need to be FORCED to cooperate and their refusal is a sure sign of guilt. They always blame the investigators so this is more of the same. The investigation must go on without her " cooperation" and issue their findings. Then, she will start to attack the Alaskan legislators. Same game-same Party-same guilt.

It wasn't political until the National GOP got involved. We are not all as dumb as you obviously think we are. This was going on long before you or John McSame even heard of Ms. Piggy.

The "troopergate" investigation has nothing to do with her VP run.

Subpoena Palin, then if she doesn't come, toss her in jail.

So she and songbird have taken over he new Bush/Cheney above the law, too. Somebody, MAKE her accountable. The election is not over.

Just because Cheney and Bush did it for 8 years and got away with it doesn't mean we have to put up with this crap anymore. MAKE her accountable! There are no early winners in this election.

If she did nothing wrong, she would not have to go this length. It is just more proof of how corrupt the people in the GOP are. They are what is wrong with our country. Crooks, liars, and cowards make up the Greedy OIl Party.

Here's the kicker:

McCain-Palin promoted the most perversely slanderous deception of Sen. Obama literally falsifying information concerning a bill that Obama supported that would PROTECT CHILDREN from PREDATORS by teaching STRANGER DANGER (otherwise known as age-appropriate sex education).

The unconscionable McCain-Palin campaign suggested that the bill could be "interpreted" as "teaching sex before reading". It is so pervertedly untrue, it is a disgrace that McCain would go along with such dishonesty.

But consider this: according to yet another Palin account of why she fired Mr. Monegan, Palin's new claim is that Monegan was out of line with Palin's bugetary priorities, in that Monegan dared to puruse FUNDING IN WASHINGTON TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM PREDATORS, which apparently was not in line with the Governor of Alaska's budgetary priorities, and might put her in a difficult position with the indicted Mr. STEVENS, under investigation by the FBI, and a special friend who Palin did major fundraising for.

Add to all of this, that John McCain states that we need to put an end to FAT CATS lining their own "ME FIRST" pockets, where upon, McCain proceeded to line up his CAMPAIGN ADVISORY STAFF with ME FIRST LOBBYISTS, some of whom have been involved in the most outrageous KEATING OF AMERICA - PART II, using our public funds for McPORK, McPORK, McPORK that ultimately promotes SPECIAL INTERESTS to the exclusion of AMERICAN'S INTERESTS.

The dishonesty involved in the double-speak in this perverted game of perceptions is just unconscionable.

Hey guys did anyone wonder if the pork barrel spending for Arizona is being requested by the other senator from Arizona, Sen. Jon Kyle so that it would make McCain look as though he stood against it? Anybody with similar thoughts?

From this article:

"Palin initially said she welcomed the inquiry. He later apologized for the remark, but Palin's lawyer has said the biased impression it created can't be undone."

1. What did he apologize for, letting the cat out of the bag?

2. If you knew that the ones overseeing the investigation were out to get you, would you be cooperative, especially since you had nothing to hide?

You are seeing what happens when a national campaign swarms over a local politician and starts running her for its own good. She said repeatedly she would cooperate with the BIPARTISAN! 3 REPUBLICANS, 2 DEMOCRATS! investigation, right up until Aug 29, when McCain's lawyers shut her up.

She'd have gotten over this bump on her own, but now it's just a repeat of a movie we've seen before and didn't like: stonewalling, avoidance, stonewalling, defiance.

And it emphasizes that she isn't what she said she was: transparent.

So the fact that the person overseeing the investigation has made it clear that case is "politically motivated" and that the results could "constitute an "October surprise" for the McCain campaign", is worth ignoring? Get real.

1) It was an ill advised comment no doubt, but it does not come close to justifying McCain's attempt to spin this as a partisan investigation.

2) The suggestion that anyone connected to the investigation is out to get Palin is nonsense and she is certainly acting as though she has something to hide. Remember that Monegan was summoned to the Governor's mansion to meet with Todd Palin!!! If I had to guess I would say that it is the extent to which Palin's unelected, uneducated redneck husband acted as co-Governor that the McCain camp told Palin she had to hide. The firing of Monegan is a minor matter, but all the bobbing and weaving from Palin suggests that there is more to this than meets the eye.

1. When a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee (Democratic state Sen. Hollis French) made his comment, he made it a partisan investigation.

2. Those personal attackes ruin any credibility you thought you may have had.

I say from here on out we all NO longer comply with any subpoenas. If Sarah Scary doesn't have to do it, either should the rest of the American people. So much for the justice system...it went out the window when this ditz made herself above the law. So should we be.

Our justice system went out the window when we couldn't convict a man who killed his ex-wife and a guy delivering her sunglasses and when a president lied to a federal grand jury.

The Bush administration has made a mockery of the justice system. They set this precedent by not responding to any congressional subpoenas.
Where's Harriet Myers, Dick Cheney, Alberto Gonzales?
They have said that the law doesn't apply to them.
We should all be so lucky.
