Edward O'Callaghan, left, and Megan Stapleton, spokespersons with the McCain campaign, answer questions concerning the firing of former public safety commissioner Walt Monegan during a news conference in Anchorage, Alaska Monday Sept. 15, 2008. Lawyers for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin have released e-mails detailing what they say is the real reason she dismissed Walt Monegan, the public safety commissioner whose firing prompted the "Troopergate" controversy. ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin is unlikely to speak with an independent counsel hired by Alaska lawmakers to review the firing of her public safety commissioner, a spokesman for Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Monday.

Spokesman Ed O'Callaghan said he has not spoken with Palin, but she was "unlikely to cooperate" with the inquiry "as long as it remains tainted."

Democrats charged that the McCain campaign was trying to stall the investigation.

"The partisan presidential campaign of McCain/Palin has interfered and is picking partisan targets to smear in order to make this investigation look like something it isn't," said Patti Higgins, chairwoman of the Alaska Democratic Party. "Rather than cooperating with the investigation, the Republican presidential campaign is doing everything it can to stall and smear."

O'Callaghan also said he did not know whether Palin's husband, Todd, would challenge a subpoena issued Friday to compel his cooperation. Thomas Van Flein, the Palins' lawyer, who has accepted service of the subpoena, did not return messages seeking comment. The governor herself has not been subpoenaed, but the Legislature's investigator, Steve Branchflower, has said he hopes to speak with her.

Palin and her husband campaigned Monday in Colorado and Ohio. Palin also planned appearances Tuesday in Ohio.

McCain's campaign insists the investigation into the firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan has been hijacked by Democrats.

Palin initially said she welcomed the inquiry. But after she became McCain's running mate on Aug. 29 her lawyer sought to have the three-member state Personnel Board take over the investigation, alleging that public statements by the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Democratic state Sen. Hollis French, indicated the probe was politically motivated.

French said Sept. 2 that the results of the investigation could constitute an "October surprise" for the McCain campaign. He later apologized for the remark, but Palin's lawyer has said the biased impression it created can't be undone.

The McCain campaign says it can prove Monegan was fired in July because of insubordination on budget issues, and not because he refused to fire a state trooper who went through a nasty divorce from Palin's sister.

To that end, the campaign released a series of e-mails detailing the frustration several Palin administration officials experienced in dealing with Monegan. The "last straw," the campaign said, was a trip Monegan planned to Washington in July to seek federal money for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases.

In a July 7 e-mail, John Katz, the governor's special counsel, noted two problems with the trip: the governor hadn't agreed the money should be sought, and the request "is out of sequence with our other appropriations requests and could put a strain on the evolving relationship between the Governor and Sen. Stevens."

Monegan was fired four days later.

In the weeks since, it has emerged that the Palins and her staff repeatedly had contacted Monegan expressing their dismay at the continued employment of Trooper Mike Wooten, who divorced Palin's sister in 2005. The following year, Wooten was suspended for five days based on complaints filed by the Palins, including that he drank in his patrol car, used a Taser on his 10-year-old stepson and illegally shot a moose.

A bipartisan panel of the Legislature voted unanimously to authorize an investigation into the circumstances of Monegan's firing.

In an effort to move the investigation into the Personnel Board's court, Van Flein filed a complaint there. But on Monday, he asked the board to dismiss the matter, citing the e-mails about budget issues as proving the real reason for Monegan's dismissal.

"The Governor decided to replace Mr. Monegan based on his refusal to execute her administration's policy on fiscal and budget matters, a refusal that between late 2007 and the middle of 2008 blossomed into outright insubordination."

Monegan's attorney said he had no immediate comment.

Also made clear in the e-mails is that some Palin staffers believed Monegan worked outside normal channels in making budget requests, in one case writing a letter to the governor in support of a funding for a project she had already vetoed.

What is the matter, Sarah, afraid the truth will come out about how you ran your city and state? The truth hurts, doesn't it???? Then of course, you probably wouldn't know the truth if it hit you in the face.
What happened to being transparent? What happened to your being happy to cooperate with the investigation?

When a dictator/governor want's to fire somebody because she just feels like it, then she just fires him and then makes up stuff about him to cover up for the firing or she simply sets a trap to the person and pushes him toward it.

Untrustworthy woman one day, unthrustworty woman everyday!

The repressed and ignorant who support Plan are already convinced that the trooper was a 'bad guy' and zapped his step kid. The former commissioner was rather weak on Rachel Maddow last night.

But no matter, these neo-cons, PUMAs and GOP supporters aren't going to change their weak minds anyway.

Obama and Biden, with the help of the Clintons, need to beat the drums loudly in the name of our failing economy. Half the ignoramuses that I deal with in Alabama are afraid Obama is going to raise their taxes. Of course most in my state have political tunnel vision but Obama needs to reiterate the fact that it is the wealthy who will get the brunt of his tax program. There is little time left to put out the message of the Democrats. Troopergate is probably not going to be a deterrent for Palin and her Grandpa Mac.

OBAMA/BIDEN'08.

Ed Shultz held a town hall yesterday in Anchorage. I highly suggest anyone interested in this case give a listen to 3 hours of Alaskans explaining why this lady is unqualified to be VP or God forbid, President of the U.S.A. People were fired up & pissed off (including some Republicans) at the hijacking of this investigation (not by Obama) by the McCain campaign.
Legislators familiar with this investigation spoke out about a process that included 8 Republicans & 4 Democrats who voted unanimously to investigate. 2 days after choosing Palin as the VP candidate McCain's campaign sent dozens of political operatives & Lawyers to Anchorage in an attempt to hijack & stonewall the investigation. Fact: This investigation was well underway BEFORE Palin was chose.
Fact: Palin had publicly agreed to cooperate fully w/ investigators. Fact: This information was highly publicized & readily available to the McCain campaign & McCain chose her anyway.
Now the McCain/ Palin campaign is out in full force claiming the investigation has been tainted by Obama. Basically even if wrong doing were found it would amount to an ethics violation. It seems it's always the cover up that makes these things stink. Please go to Ed Shultz's site & listen to the citizens of Alaska speak out on this & other issues regarding Sarah Palin.
We can NOT AFFORD MORE OF THE SAME!!!

Is "this" the kind of politics that "Evangelicals are supporting?" Deceiving politicians full of lies and greed to gain the presidency in the Whitehouse. It's even sadder that the most respected writer and founder of "Focus On The Family" Dr. James Dobson, has backed and supported by name on website page of the racially pointed and degradingly painted box of "Obama Waffle Mix". From The Huffington Post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/13/conservative-political-fo_n_126243.html
I'd say "Evangelicals are waffeling now". At least I hope they are re-considering thier positions of support. As any one can say they are (pro-life) only to gain the votes of the "Evangelical Base". Consider this... President Bush said he was (pro-life) to win those votes and get in the Whitehouse, but exactly what has President Bush actually done about it?

"The same.. John McCain, if you vote him in office then you are to blame"
Evangelicals... do you want to get hit by the same train TWICE?
I don't.

A believer
An Independant voting against John McCain

God America; do we really want to go down this road for another 4 years! WAKE UP AMERICA

If you're not outraged you haven't been paying attention. A REPUBLICAN called for this investigation to go on and I believe there are 6 or so more republicans in this. How can you claim its hijacked?

Hey sportjudy I agree with you. Both Gov. Palin and Sen. McCain perhaps thought that since Alaska is not on the mainland nobody would dare come and probe into the background of Sarah Palin. Probably their motto was "WHAT HAPPENS IN ALASKA STAYS IN ALASKA', but much to their chagrin we find that there are investigations. Boy! were they wrong. They also tried to pull one over our eyes saying that there was a large number of people at their rallies. A state with about 700,000 in population I wonder how many came, Atleast I know there were almost 2000 protesters. You can"t sweep every thing under the rug and paint a rosy picture of the Alaska populace all supporting Gov. Palin.

As I understand from the McCain camp's Rick Davis..... only when the media is deferential to her. That's a load of crap. After seeing her performance in the interview with Charlie Gibson, they probably thought she would sink McCain and hence the excuse. If she accepted the nomination WITHOUT A BLINK, then she should be ready for the media WITHOUT A BLINK. Just imagine when she has to meet a leader of another nation at a short notice. That would definitel spell D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R.

You know what really pisses me off about this situation...the regular media, oh sure they'll run the story, but they sugarcoat the stories and say exactly what the McCain camp does and don't investigate any further. Oh it's just the Obama camp stirring things up. Let's get real here, Sarah Palin was under investigation months prior to her accepting the VP nomination and the people investigating her primarily are a bipartisan investigation team consisting of more Republicans than Democrats. Sarah Palin is also a bigger liar than McCain, by campaigning on an open government system where she would have nothing to hide and she was willing to cooperate fully with the investigation prior to her VP nomination . It's funny now she has so much to hide. The other problem is the media shows none of the demonstrations against Sarah Palin in her home state, all you here is how much the people of Alaska love....BS

Even though McCain claims to be the enemy of earmarks, he continues to swallow Sarah's lies about the bridge to nowhere. For the good explanations of this earmark saga, read my colleague David Epstein's posts at:

THEN, THANKS BUT NO THANKS SARAH. WE JUST DON'T NEED ANOTHER LYING, UNCOOPERATIVE PERSON WHO IS BEING INVESTIGATED.

THANKS BUT NO THANKS SARAH, TO ME THIS IS INDICITIVE OF HOW YOU WOULD RUN THE GOVERNEMENT.

THANKS BUT NO THANKS SARAH, I WAS RAISED TO OWN UP TO WHAT I HAVE DONE AND I DON'T RESPECT PEOPLE WHO REFUSE TO DO THAT ALSO.

THANKS BUT NO THANKS SARAH, EVERY TIME YOU SAY SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF IT HAS BEEN PROVEN TO BE A LIE OR A HALF-TRUTH (WHICH IN MY BOOKS IS STILL A LIE).

I JUST DON'T THINK I CAN STOMACH 12-16 YEARS IN TOTAL OF LIES AND TURMOIL AND SECRETS AND LOOKING OUT FOR THE OIL BARONS.

THANKS BUT NO THANKS SARAH, I'VE HAD JUST 16 DAYS OF YOU IN THE LIMELIGHT AND ALREADY YOU'VE LIED TO US - ALREADY!!

THIS COUNTRY NEEDS A FRESH START.

AND AS FOR YOU JOHN MCCAIN, WELL HERE'S WHAT I THINK via another's thought on mccain:

His opportunistic and irresponsible choice of Sarah Palin as his political heir -- the person in whose hands he would leave the country -- is a form of personal treason, a betrayal of all he once stood for. Palin, no matter what her other attributes, is shockingly unprepared to become president. McCain knows that. He means to win, which is all right; he means to win at all costs, which is not.

SHAME ON YOU BOTH.

THANKS BUT NO THANKS.

fabulous comments Winterline!!! Very well said, thank you.
Yes, the fact that Palin is already trying to duck the media, &the investigators, stalling the investigation, trying to keep the truth from be known until after the election... she's a crook and an outright phoney. She has no business even being in the position she's in right now - I'm amazed that Alaskans put up with her, even as a small town mayor (5,000 in town) and as Governor of only 600,000 people. I know their 'in the dark' alot of the year...but all of this (ST)alin stuff is unbelieveable. Truly disgusting that this is what Republicans are stuck having to "go" with. Ugh.

Well if this isn't more of the same I don't know what is. McCain adopts and expands Bush policies and Palin adopts Cheney policies of ignoring and refusing to take part in investigations. More of the same has already started.

I'd forgotten about this video. All those beautiful voices.

And so true..............but the message so forgotten and maligned by the past 8 years.

How did we let that happen? How did we let them cow us into being ashamed of being liberal? Or if not ashamed............at least defensive.

Hmmmm.
