WASHINGTON — A sudden surge in advertising by outside groups is filling the airwaves and cable channels with unflattering portrayals of Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain as their presidential contest enters its final seven weeks.

These organizations range from the newly created BornAliveTruth.org, an anti-abortion group that assails Obama's abortion votes, to MoveOn.org, the 10-year-old liberal organization that came to life during the impeachment of President Clinton.

In a patchwork of advertising, organizing and mailings, these groups are operating as independent militia forces for the campaigns and the national parties. By law, they cannot coordinate their efforts with the campaigns, but they take their cues from news events and from the ad strategies and messages that the campaigns themselves undertake.

"We'll see more of that type of activity because it is turning into a very close race where there a number of states that will be decided by a very close margin," said Anthony Corrado, a political scientist and an expert on political spending techniques at Colby College in Maine.

During the Democratic and Republican primary contests, McCain and Obama criticized outside groups, even those that came to their aid. But lately both campaigns have responded to their respective help with silence.

Despite new rules that make it easier for outside groups to be on the air at the height of the campaign, the amount spent so far is a small fraction of what independent groups had spent by this time in 2004. Several of the groups, particularly those that have emerged virtually overnight, need wealthy donors to sustain their campaigns. Only a few have come forth.

So far, the political left has relied on several established political action committees that raise money under strict limits from their donors. MoveOn, with nearly 4.2 million members, is putting its expanded membership muscle behind Obama with its largest ever voter and volunteer drive and with an up-to-$7 million fall advertising campaign, executive director Eli Pariser said.

"In last three weeks or so our membership has galvanized to a greater degree than in 2004," Pariser said.

Story continues below
advertisement

Its first ad draws attention to the members of McCain's circle of advisers who have worked as lobbyists, particularly those who have had oil industry clients. "When it comes to gas prices, John McCain won't be taking care of you, he'll be taking care of 'My friends'...'My friends'...'My friends,'" the ad says as quick cutting clips show McCain addressing audiences with his usual salutation, "My friends."

MoveOn has seen a 1 million jump in its membership this year, Pariser said, approaching the size of the National Rifle Association. The organization has a goal of registering 500,000 young voters in battleground states. Pariser said MoveOn will share the data with other activist groups for efforts to get out the vote on behalf of Obama.

The Service Employees International Union on Sunday began spending $2 million in six battleground states, depicting McCain as out of touch on economic issues. And two Democratic-leaning political action committees _ BraveNewPAC and Democracy for America _ aired a modest, $50,000 three-day anti-McCain ad on CNN and MSNBC that features a former fellow prisoner of war criticizing the Arizona senator's temperament.

On the right, BornAliveTruth.org's $350,000 spot singles out Obama's efforts while in the Illinois Senate to defeat the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. Obama and abortion rights forces in Illinois have said the bill would have undermined the landmark Supreme Court case on abortion, Roe v. Wade. The ad will air during the next week in Ohio and New Mexico, especially targeting Albuquerque and Cleveland.

North Carolina-based RightChange.com plans to spend about $1.5 million criticizing Obama's tax plan in an ad that will run over the next two weeks on national cable networks, including Fox News Channel, CNN and CNN Headline News, said spokesman Tim Pittman.

RightChange.com and BornAliveTruth.org are nonprofit entities commonly known as 527s, for the section of the tax code that regulates them. Unlike political action groups, these organizations can raise money from individuals in unlimited amounts. The main donor of BornAliveTruth is Raymond Ruddy, a prominent anti-abortion philanthropist in Massachusetts who supported Mitt Romney for president in the GOP primary.

RightChange's main donor Fred Eshelman is a North Carolina pharmaceutical executive who has contributed more than $200,000 to Republican candidates and party organizations since 2002, according to Federal Election Commission records.

The efforts pale in comparison with what the campaigns themselves are spending, but they can be a distraction. Last month, a conservative group called the American Issues Project spent $2.9 million in an anti-Obama ad that questioned his association with former 1960s radical Bill Ayers. Obama was forced to respond, and targeted markets that ran the American Issues Project ad with twice as many commercials, according to Evan Tracey, whose firm tracks political advertising.

The American Issues Project ad was paid for by Harold Simmons, a McCain fundraiser who also helped finance the 2004 Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads against then Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Its organizers have said more ads may be coming.

Wow, this is the first time I've been on this site and I'm embarrassed.

I didn't realize the people in my party were so hateful. I've seen the nurse talk about holding that baby in Chicago hospital's closet for 45 minutes while the poor thing died. Then she talked about how most of these babies were left to die alone and unloved.

I have been a Democrat because I love people and thought our party was the party that looked out for the "least among us" as Obama said in Denver. How can he say this and vote against a law to protect these babies?

I will be voting for McCain this time. I hope we can rid our party of these evil people who have created an industry by killing babies.

Last thing. Have any of you that are for "abortion rights" ever looked at the pictures of aborted babies? Or, if you're really brave, watch an abortion video? I challenge your courage to go look at these pictures so at least you know what you are supporting. Of course, most of you are cowards and will simply attack me. But, for those few of you who have the courage, just go google "abortion pictures" and you will find many.

If there are any of you that still care about our party and want to take it back from the abortion industry and return it to the principles of John Kennedy, join me. Vote for McCain this time.

Years ago, I don't remember when, ProLifers were on trial for turning a Planned Parenthood Clinic into a pile of ashes. During the trial the judge asked them it anyone was willing to raise an unwanted child if it was saved from abortion. Everyone here including the so called Right to lifers know what the answer was. Nobody was willing to go that far. Their protection only happens while the fetus is in the womb. After that, it's everyone for themselves including the newborn.
So what choice does a woman have:
1. Not keeping her husband by refusing sex with him.
2. Take birthcontrol...no not allowed.
3. Who is going to adopt it. Everyone wants to adopt from other countries but not American babies. Especially the rich ones, they are just so 'with it' among their rich peers.
4. Go and get an abortion? Oops, that will be against the law if the scum of the last 8 years get back in.
5. Since she cannot get an abortion, she can have it and stuff it into a garbage can.
6 Go to a back alley where there is a shady character with a coat hanger.

We Americans have a strange society, In normal societies the scum sinks to the bottom, but in America, the land to be free to be rich, the scum floats to the top, like turds full of smelly hot air.

History has taught us that we can not stop women from terminating pregnancies by outlawing it. It results in the loss of more life. A focus on the prevention of unwanted pregnancies is the direction to take. Teaching young people restraint and postponement of gratification is admirable and for many young people this will work, but not for all. Unless we allow our kids the opportunity to ask questions and to be given honest answers, to trust in our ability to guide them in making the right decisions, and to provide them with the resources they need to make the best decisions possible, we will never get anywhere close to ending abortion. Please, look at the statistics on abortion. Observe how numbers of abortions went dramatically down during the Clinton administration. Abortion goes down along with a decrease in unemployment and poverty. Observe how numbers of abortion has steadily increased to over a million a year in the Bush administration. You vote against your own self interest if you are Pro Life and you vote Republican on this issue. The values that Pro Life believers hold precious are being used to further corruption, greed, and a deeper economic divide in this country, which only leads to greater numbers of abortion!

Your stats are not correct. Abortions peaked in 1990 and has been steadily declining ever since, including both the Clinton and Bush years.

NO ONE IS PRO-ABORTION! It's just that repub-lie-cans want to make pregnant girls criminals when they're forced to go to back alley abortionists -- and the Democrats want to reduce the abortion rate through age apprpriate sex ed -- available contraception -- and building a society where a woman might actually be able to raise her child if she so chooses.

Why is it the same people who are against abortion are the same ones against
education? Makes zero sense. Education is the answer to just about everything

And against birth control. And against child care.

Sure seems like a dumb strategy - if you don't like abortions, wouldn't you want to ENCOURAGE birth control so there are less of them? And wouldn't you want to help women out with things like child care if you want to encourage them to keep the baby?

O knows that the way to reduce abortion is to fix the social problems that lead to it.

P@lin's kooky policies will only make it worse.

Jim Kuhnhenn left out one vital piece of information concerning Barack Obama's vote on the Born Alive Infants Protection Act in the Illinois Senate. The bill, as written, would have endangered Roe v. Wade, but in addition to that, there was already a bill on the books mandating medical assistance to ANY child born alive. The new bill didn't add anything positive, and was definitely aimed at taking rights away. A bill mandating medical assistance to such newborns, but without endangering Roe v. Wade came up in the U.S. Senate, and was supported by Senator Obama.

NEWS FLASH! Obama is not pro-abortion, he is pro abortion RIGHTS. There is a fundamental difference here. No one is eager to kill babies, born or unborn, and it's just ridiculous to presume that; the totality of the circumstances is what will and should determine the choices that are made in such a situation. Ideally, the choice would be to have the baby and raise it in a loving home, but, trite as it may sound, we do NOT live in an ideal republican world, where up is down and black is white. I personally would never have an abortion, but where Obama has me sold is that he has shown himself to be very thoughtful on this issue, saying that we all ought to acknowledge that this is a decision that women do not take lightly, nevertheless, it IS and should continue to be their's to make. Otherwise, we effectively make a fetus and its mother adversaries at the point of conception. Prevention is better than cure, and Obama wants us to address the 'cause of the issue so as to alleviate it and perhaps even eliminate it somewhere down the line. His approach definitely offers a better chance of solving the problem than one that says, you must do as I say, BECAUSE I SAID SO. And the fact is all these sanctimonious people who presume to think they know what Jesus would do are just blasphemous Pharisees who have no real understanding of who He is.

Banji81,

Obama quite deliberately took the word "rare" out of his platform. He doesn't want abortion to be rare. He wants as many as possible so he can reap the benefits in the form of campaign contributions from Planned Parenthood and the other abortion shops.

And, I DARE YOU to go to a Planned Parenthood near you and see what they do. They sell and market ABORTION. Pure and simple. They refuse every effort to have them provide information on adoption or any outcome other than abortion.

Not only that. But, a teenage girl near us who volunteered there said they had her poking condom wrappers with a small needle to make them leak. But, they did it in such a way as it was very hard to see the puncture. She quit after that.

The fact is, Obama has called pregnancy a "punishment" that he doesn't want for his daughters. A baby in the womb isn't a miracle of life to be loved and cherished, it is a "punishment". How do you get more pro-abortion than that?

Take it how you want it, the point is there is no responsibility for their actions. We all make mistakes in life but we all have to live with the consequences of those mistakes. When you make a loophole and allow a quick fix for mistakes such as an abortion, there is no sense of responsibility. My wife is a nurse and number of people who come in for numerous abortions is staggering. We are talking four, five, six different times. What responsibility have these individuals learned, none, all they've learned is that there is a quick fix for their mistakes. Is it that much to ask people to be accountable for their actions.

I'd be willing to bet those women are the ones who had the benefit of abstinence-only education. IT DOESN'T WORK.

Sex is a fact of life. It's absolutely ridiculous to believe that you can tell a teenager that sex before marriage is wrong and assume they'll never give in to raging hormones and natural urges. So you empower them. You teach a comprehensive sex education program, which explains the various methods of birth control, along with proper usage and the failure rates of each, and prevention of STDs. You teach them to respect their bodies, as well as those of others. And you teach them that sexual activity and self-esteem do not go hand-in-hand. And most importantly, you make those birth control options available, so when if they do give in to those natural urges, they are equipped to handle the responsibility that giving in entails.

Outlawing abortion will not stop women from seeking them when faced with an unwanted pregnancy. But sensitive, responsible education will help reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies in the first place. And that, in turn, will reduce the number of abortions. Then guess what? Everybody wins!

Interesting post. But if people are using it irresponsibly is the solution to make it illegal? Or is the solution to encourage those people to use other options?

I hear you, Dave, but who put that gavel in your hands? YOU don't decide how to make people 'accountable', that's up to God. Believe it or not, people DO eventually face the consequences of their actions, whether we see it, or understand it as such, or not; you, like I, have no clue what goes on in the minds and hearts of these women who have had abortions, none. Every unjust or immoral action will eventually be vindicated somehow, but not by us, and certainly not by the republican party. What's more important now is to somehow identify the myriad of factors that cause some women to see abortions as their only options, and attack those issues, not the women themselves. The subject of abortion is a really tough debate, and I am not even remotely arguing that my position is 'the right one', but I also won't judge people whose lives I am not privy to. Does that compromise my core, fundamental, values? No. I know what I would do or not do; I know what I would, in love, advice others to do or not do, but I'll never presume to dictate or impose my views on anyone. I can carry out my great commission without the heavy hand that many (not most, though it sometimes seems that way) Christians wield. Thanks for taking the time to think about these things - a healthy dialogue is much preferable to finger pointing and condemnation.

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." What right do you or your wife have to judge women for decisions they make regarding their own bodies? I don't care if they have twenty abortions. Clearly they are comfortable with that decision, so MYOB.
