I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Revolt

David Brooks writes in the New York Times that Sarah Palin is unqualified:

In the current Weekly Standard, Steven Hayward argues that the nation's founders wanted uncertified citizens to hold the highest offices in the land. They did not believe in a separate class of professional executives. They wanted rough and rooted people like Palin.

I would have more sympathy for this view if I hadn't just lived through the last eight years. For if the Bush administration was anything, it was the anti-establishment attitude put into executive practice.

And the problem with this attitude is that, especially in his first term, it made Bush inept at governance. It turns out that governance, the creation and execution of policy, is hard. It requires acquired skills. Most of all, it requires prudence.

...

Sarah Palin has many virtues. If you wanted someone to destroy a corrupt establishment, she'd be your woman. But the constructive act of governance is another matter. She has not been engaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness.

Ross Douthat agrees at the Atlantic:

Now that we've seen the entirety of the Palin-Gibson tete-a-tete, I concur with Rich Lowry and Rod Dreher. The most that can be said in her defense is that she kept her cool and avoided any brutal gaffes; other than that, she seemed about an inch deep on every issue outside her comfort zone. Yes, the questions were tougher than the ones that a Tim Kaine or Tim Pawlenty probably would have been handed, but they were all questions that a vice-presidential nominee needs to be able to answer. And there's no way to look at her performance as anything save supporting evidence for the non-hysterical critique of her candidacy - that it's just too much, too soon - and a splash of cold water for those of us with high hopes for her future on the national stage.

And in the Washington Post, Richard Cohen goes off on McCain, seizing on the Palin pick as a sign of how far gone the candidate is:

McCain has turned ugly. His dishonesty would be unacceptable in any politician, but McCain has always set his own bar higher than most. He has contempt for most of his colleagues for that very reason: They lie. He tells the truth. He internalizes the code of the McCains -- his grandfather, his father: both admirals of the shining sea. He serves his country differently, that's all -- but just as honorably. No more, though.

...

His opportunistic and irresponsible choice of Sarah Palin as his political heir -- the person in whose hands he would leave the country -- is a form of personal treason, a betrayal of all he once stood for. Palin, no matter what her other attributes, is shockingly unprepared to become president. McCain knows that. He means to win, which is all right; he means to win at all costs, which is not.

McCain and Palin do have to get off the populist horse and start being factual and conservative if they expect conservatives to support them. This is totally unlike on the left wing, where the lefties are in love with their guy even if he deviates from dogma.

Sarah Palin is NOT qualified.(period) When she was mayor.. did you know that she did not even have to oversee the school district OR the fire department? these are two factors that most mayors deal with and usually two of THE most important and challenging factors. The President of the USA is charged with a much bigger job than overseeing the USA. The President of this country needs to have the diplomacy to handle the events and topics of EVERY single country, nation, society and human on this planet. The President of the USA needs to understand the world as a whole, not just the USA and its components. I have heard a lot of people say ... she resonates with me, she gets it " she is just like us"... well frankly... I do not want someone just like us.. I want a leader, someone who is EXTRA-ordinary- who is a citizen of this planet not just a citizen of their own comfort zone. Sarah Palin thinks dinosaurs were on the earth 4000 years ago- and I would bet my LIFE if you asked her POINT blank on the spot... WHERE Darfur is, she would have no idea where it is--furthermore... any idea what is happening there--and to my point.. NO idea what to do about it. We need a leader and that leader is Barak Obama.
When you know the truth, the truth makes you a soldier. --Gandhi

Exactly right! During her time, they hired a city administrator to handle some of the normal jobs of mayor. How come nobody has even asked what exactly it was she DID do as mayor, besides get her city mired in a multi-million dollar property debacle?

A seventh inning....high-five to Republican Senator Chuck Hagel for coming out today with some comments about Sarah Palin's LACK of political experience.

And even Karl Rove stepping out of the Republican dug-out to share his true feelings on Sarah Palin.

And where is the ultra conservative writer, Ann Colter?? I would think fire-spewing Ann would be on the cable news circuit DEFENDING Princess Sarah. Maybe Ann DOES have a brain.

This is what you call "Conservatives turn on McCain-Palin"? Where are the conservatives??

David Brooks is the only one that is even a Republican but he is far from conservative.

As a Hillary supporter who has been smeared by the Obamabots, I never noticed how much Democrats lie to each other until now. You can lie to yourselves all you want, but I can tell you that I've been to a McCain-Palin rally and they are not "turning on McCain". They are embracing him. NYT columnists not withstanding...

So, he's a Republican, but not conservative ENOUGH? That's an asinine argument. You're talking about the same David Brooks who, on the same night that PAT BUCHANAN praised Obama's speech as maybe the greatest in convention history, wrote a sarcastic op-ed about Obama crowning himself the Messiah. Then he turns and beats up on Palin, and suddenly an alleged Democrat says he's not conservative? OF COURSE the people at rallies are embracing him. They're rallies FOR him! But it is a fact that conservatives and people in his own party are turning on him, and for good reason. I wouldn't want to be one of the fools talking about how Palin is qualified, either.

Honest insights all.

The choice of Sarah Palin reminds me of when Bush proposed Harriet Myers for the supreme court. Since Myers was totally unqualified both in experience, and intellectually, everyone was aghast including the repubs. Bush's explanation was that Harry Reid had suggested it.

At that point I think most everyone in the country knew that Bush was a big dummy, Inept, a Dolt, including the conservatives who had been his apologists.

Sarah Palin is McCain's Harriet Myers. And that choice has opened some eyes about McCain.

Sara Palin's quips and catchy slogans ("We'll shake up Washington", her husband as "The First Dude", "go ahead and ask ...if you want specifics with specific policies or countries" and to "play stump-the-candidate") seems more like dialog from "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" than a presidential campaign at a time of two wars, a bombing of a US Embassy, a devastating hurricane, crisis in financial markets, unemployment and the loss of over a trillion dollars in US citizens' personal wealth and retirement accounts. She's tied with Bush for title of Clueless and Detached Chucklehead but he's got a 17% approval rating. What's keeping her in the race?

"If you want specifics with specific policies or countries...go ahead and ask" -Palin (in her momentous town hall meeting)

I watched this clip on the news. The questioner ASKED for specifics in the first place. Palin answered her by saying "I'm ready. You can ask me for specifics...". Hello? Seems like her runningmate's short-term memory problems are contagious.

Palin was picked as a way to pick up the conservative voters. Obviously they have not noticed that the world before BUSH is falling apart in every sense. Conservatives care about the enviroment and other issues besides Abortion. Republican's are thinking that Palin is attractive to woman voters. As a woman they could not be more wrong. I do not want a president that cares less about women issues than the current one.
A vote for McCain is more of the same Bush cover up's that have occured over the last eight years.

End this madness. Vote Obama.

I would like to ask you a few questions, if I may, and it has nothing to do with the color of his scin.

If Mr. Obama became Christian in a tender age of twenty something, thanks to an extremist, a disgusting pastor, who hates this country and its people as much, as his “first” teacher (Communist from Hawaii) did, I would like to know who was he before that – atheist, Muslim, Jew?

I also would like to know why all the records of Mr. Obama's time in Columbia University are inaccessible? What, I would like to know, is Mr. Obama hiding?

I also would like to know why he was against a simple, human law, to provide a medical help to children born alive after abortion? The picture of that poor baby, thrown in a dirty room, between brooms and garbage cans, screaming for help, should never be forgotten by anyone. Why did he sponsored a very important bill – to teach 5 years old “appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control”. And don’t tell me that it was to teach kids how to avoid sex predators – READ THE STUPID THING.

I also would like to know how (during his first year in Chicago’s Senate) his wife’s salary jumped by some insignificant 170% and her boss got 1 million dollars of people’s money?

Read the Stupid Thing? OK, Helen, I just read it. I read the bill, and school curriculum based on those kinds of bills (that one didn't pass).

Three words: Age Appropriate Information.

Kindergarteners get taught very important concepts as part of health education/HIV prevention:

1) Wash your hands to prevent the spread of diseases.
2) If someone is bleeding on the playground, don't touch the blood.

First graders get taught about privacy, to help prevent molestation.

Middle school and high school kids get taught about sexually transmitted diseases.

Just because it's part of health and sex education doesn't mean they're teaching Kindergarten kids about sex. C’mon Helen, think! Are you afraid a teacher might “turn kids gay?” Don’t listen to those ads without questioning them as much as you question Obama.

Educate yourself, Helen, because the GOP will lie all the way to the GE. They'll trick you out of your money and votes, while claiming to represent "the common man." They'll say Democrats are responsible for the economic meltdown that just cost you your retirement, but from 200-2005, McCain championed the deregulation of banks and investment companies. He's a "maverick" who'll take on Washington, but he votes 95% with Bush.

Educate yourself Helen. Question Republican lies.

HelenfromMaryland,

I think it is unfortunate that you do not know the facts because you chose not to seek them. Or you are asking questions inside a person's psyche that can never be known.

If this election is for your accountability of who your past associates/affiliations are with then please review their religious upbringings and explain to me why they are not accountable for all that was taught in their churches or religious chapels.

If this election is about one bill that in order to be approved had to include 5 year olds to be better educated about sexual predators AND sex education...any mother and or father will tell you...BRING IT ON. Mr. Obama is a father of two beautiful, adorable children that will be better educated and better prepared to circumvent teenage pregnancy. A lot of good your candidate did by teaching abstinence...and has a pregnant teenage daughter. Please review their records.

See you know the answer. You were only here to antagonize. And unfortunately I guess you think it worked. It didn't. I stand firmly by my candidate. I love this country, my candidate, the color of his SKIN and the content of his character. If you want to know the answers to those rhetorical questions you asked, then go to barackobama.com or any other website that boasts his accomplishments and your misconceptions. You might learn something.

Now go take your blue pill and don't forget to kiss Karl Rove goodnight!

Cohen is right. McCain's irresponsible choice of Palin is a personal act of treason

I take it one further; it is a petulant selfish act of treason against us all. As our nation teeters on the edge of another major depression, as we struggle with two wars, he hands our nation over to Palin. Even as she is being investigated and her lack of character is getting a big light shown on it, he betrays our nation' needs to surive over to someone who can't meet the qualitifications for President. Shame on McCain. He was once a great man. He isn't anymore.

Shootermarx has hit it on the head; we do not think critically. That means that if you are a liberal, you allow the liberals to lie to you and eat it up, and do not question. Freedomalert is a true example of the Right and its non critical thinkers. When Karl Rove says McCain is not telling the truth, only a non critical thinker will say he is telling the truth. Rather than defend actual positions and acknowledging the idiocy that comes with campaigns we fight over things like the lies of David Corsi that Obama was not born in the US, or the false claim that McCain wants to fight in Iraq for 100 years.

As long as we allow the Karl Roves and James Carville’s to pull stunts which we do not critically look at and that we blindingly accept, we will keep getting this kind of stuff. I am waiting for the day when the mantra is:"I know that what he said is not true, but I support her or him because of political policies or philosophy", or “She may not be experienced and may be new to the scene, but I support her policies” while at the same time acknowledging the lies, distortions and spin that the campaigns then the media are so eager to give us. We get what we deserve; that goes for TV shows, campaigns and candidates.

I'm a democrat and a liberal and I'm an EXTREME "critical thinker."

In fact, I KNEW back in 2002 that invading Iraq made absolutely no sense, was a distraction from the REAL terrorists, and was a treasonable LIE being perpetrated upon the american people.

So, while 85% of this country was busy waving their american glags and cheering Bush on, I was thinking that the people in this country have no concept of "critical thinking." They were just a bunch of lemmings that followed Bush right off the cliff!

Correct, McCain does not want to **fight** in Iraq for 100 years. He wants to establish the kind of military presence we had in Germany during the Cold War (and still have to a lesser degree) or post-WWII Japan.

Iraq is not Germany and the situation there does not resemble post-WWII Japan. A military presence there would be a constant irritant to millions of millions of Muslims in the region and world-wide.

This is an encouraging sign. Perhaps conservatives don't want to see America go down the drain after all just so that they can hold onto power.

Palin is a dangerous woman. She has lots of self confidence, an ability to con the simple minded republican electorate but no real skills to manage the complex relationships that the United States is involved in with the rest of the world. She has a simple minded philosophy that is sure to alienate the rest of the world. If, heaven forbid, McCain dies and she gets a hold of power she has shown she will wield power clumsily and the United States will be run by a cult. This will be disasterous for America in every way.
