Revolt

David Brooks writes in the New York Times that Sarah Palin is unqualified:

In the current Weekly Standard, Steven Hayward argues that the nation's founders wanted uncertified citizens to hold the highest offices in the land. They did not believe in a separate class of professional executives. They wanted rough and rooted people like Palin.

I would have more sympathy for this view if I hadn't just lived through the last eight years. For if the Bush administration was anything, it was the anti-establishment attitude put into executive practice.

And the problem with this attitude is that, especially in his first term, it made Bush inept at governance. It turns out that governance, the creation and execution of policy, is hard. It requires acquired skills. Most of all, it requires prudence.

...

Sarah Palin has many virtues. If you wanted someone to destroy a corrupt establishment, she'd be your woman. But the constructive act of governance is another matter. She has not been engaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness.

Ross Douthat agrees at the Atlantic:

Now that we've seen the entirety of the Palin-Gibson tete-a-tete, I concur with Rich Lowry and Rod Dreher. The most that can be said in her defense is that she kept her cool and avoided any brutal gaffes; other than that, she seemed about an inch deep on every issue outside her comfort zone. Yes, the questions were tougher than the ones that a Tim Kaine or Tim Pawlenty probably would have been handed, but they were all questions that a vice-presidential nominee needs to be able to answer. And there's no way to look at her performance as anything save supporting evidence for the non-hysterical critique of her candidacy - that it's just too much, too soon - and a splash of cold water for those of us with high hopes for her future on the national stage.

And in the Washington Post, Richard Cohen goes off on McCain, seizing on the Palin pick as a sign of how far gone the candidate is:

McCain has turned ugly. His dishonesty would be unacceptable in any politician, but McCain has always set his own bar higher than most. He has contempt for most of his colleagues for that very reason: They lie. He tells the truth. He internalizes the code of the McCains -- his grandfather, his father: both admirals of the shining sea. He serves his country differently, that's all -- but just as honorably. No more, though.

...

His opportunistic and irresponsible choice of Sarah Palin as his political heir -- the person in whose hands he would leave the country -- is a form of personal treason, a betrayal of all he once stood for. Palin, no matter what her other attributes, is shockingly unprepared to become president. McCain knows that. He means to win, which is all right; he means to win at all costs, which is not.

It is funny how the majority of you write in terms of convincing people of your opininons with the most ridiculous statements like: "no one thinks Palin can be President not even the people that support her" duh! Why do you think we support her. You have a person that in 5 years did not want to move a finger to help his country, a nice talker, a communist and a muslim at heart, yet you insult, disrespect a veteran who was willing to give his life for this country. You expect him to be articulate to tell you some lies. But he only tells you the truth, without drama, without charming, freedom has a cost. If you would rather have a fourth TV in your house, than sacrifice your luxuries, to have these funds to protect our country, to stop dependence on foreign oil and all that that make sense to people who love freedom. You think that Obama is going to solve all the problems with his charisma? Charisma is temporary, and Obama will sell the country to communist and muslims. Wake up.

It is you that is sleeping if you think that McCan't does not lie, when in fact his entire campaign is based on untruths. Rather than discussing the issues he just tries to trick Americans like you into believing that Obama will "sell the country to communist and muslims". That is laughable. But while you spread these lies McCan't has again avoided telling people what his plan is for America.
All John does is put out negative ads attacking Obama whether it is fact based or not. It is ridiculous to accuse Obama of celebrity status for attending his own fund raiser. So what if some of the folks supporting him are from Hollywood, but I guess I would be worried too if my opponent has the support of such rich and influential people.

I would assume that you support Palin because you are not capable of thinking past the image to seriously consider what the consequences would be of a Palin presidency. I do not understand what your reference to Obama as "in 5 years not wanting to move a finger to help his country"--that's just weird. No he is not a communist not a muslim, even "at heart". McCain endured his Viet Nam imprisonment with courage. Now he is telling endless lies to win at any cost. These lies have ben proven. He knows, by his own admission, nothing about economics. And I don't understand what you are talking about with your remarks on not depending on foreign oil and not clinging to "luxuries"--both of those are hallmarks of Bush/Cheney. , who support the greed of the oil companies and who give tax cuts to the real people who are wallowing in luxury.

I don't have as much a problem with Sarah Palins experience as much as I do as her lack of above average intelligence. I just don't think Palin has the ability quickly think through complex issues a when asked.

Let's face it, she's completely out of her league. She putting on a good show, faking it pretty good, but when it comes down to it, she is not ready, even if those ethical issues weren't out there, even if her character were as pure as the driven snow. Fortunately for the Obama campaign, her star is starting to fall now, as it should. McCain should have vetted her. It is so obvious he did not. What leadership!

You don't have a problem with Sarah Palin's experience?? We're not talking about her experience drivin her kids to a hockey game --we're talking about the kind of experience needed to run the country! so far, her experience is: 1. hires completely unqualified friends from high school for public office (sound familiar??) 2. directs them to use personal emails to avoid future subpoenas 3. goes for highest $ earmarks per capita of any state, while denying funding for things like "the special olympics" and "rape prevention" 4. forces women to PAY for their own rape kits 5 currently working with Karl Rove and other hired goons to obstruct the Troopergate investigation -- 6. has not stopped lying since she has started running for VP --the list just goes on and on -- Don't be fooled --she's Cheney with lipstick...

Sorry, but my objecivity has long been tested on the 'Palin factor."

She's a proven liar.
She's now ducking an investigation that she previously welcomed.
She misstates facts.
She goes to RNC pep rallies with a script and never deviates
She gave one serious news interview and being polite -- She FAILED!

I believe one's VP credentials need to be higher than a former mayor of a town population 7000 and a 11/2 year governor of a state population 700 thousand. Oh yes, and she's a soccer mom!

GET REAL!

She is the perfect pick for Bush3. Petty and secretive. Troopergate is to this election as the Air National Guard was to 2000 -- the Rethuglians stonewalled that, too. Do you really believe American's would have supported Bush had they known the truth before the election? I commend McFartyPants for his choice. It guarantees the headline for Novemeber 5th.

It's simply inaccurate that the founders favored inexperienced "rough and rooted" people for public office. The first several presidents all had many, many years of government experience. In Washington's case, his background was primarily military experience, but Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and JQ Adams all served in numerous high-ranking posts in the Congress, the diplomatic corps and other position, including either high-ranking jobs in the cabinet or the vice presidency or both, before being considered serious candidates for president.

Unfortunately, no such people are in the race this year.

What's inaccurate is the lauding of Hayward's notion that the founding
fathers wanted "uncertified" persons to serve in governance.
This is a misnomer. The founding fathers didn't want "career politicians"
but they certainly wanted qualified and "certified" leaders.

What they preferred was the "citizen statesman" who took elected office,
served honorably and to the best of their capacity, and then returned
to private life.

I believe that both Brooks and Hayward played a wee bit fast and loose
with their interpretation but nevertheless I am heartened by Brooks' statements.

How come?

Can you imagine any white freshman senator with no legislative experience of any note, no business experience, no military experience, no foreign policy experience, no state or local city executive experience ever being allowed to make it through the primaries and on to President?

How come? Think about it. It certainly isn't his strength or brilliance.

Here is the sense: some of us would have preferred Hillary Clinton, based on her wider experience. But since Obama is the candidate, we would never go over to McCain, a liar, a man who sees the world only in military terms, who sucks up to anyone who he thinks could further his candidacy and who refuses to releast medical records in spite of growing anxiety about his health. Add to that a bad-tempered, narrow-minded inexperienced veep candidate, and you can see why people support Obama.

Why would "The Right" think a Maverick and a Pitt-bull (with lipstick) would lead any differently than a Texas Cowboy?

Washington, DC doesn't need more reckless leadership -- it needs the kind of intelligent leadership that Bill Clinton delivered, establishing policies that will improve our economy, strengthen our military, improve our world standing, and once again restore confidence in our government at home, and abroad.

George W. Bush pledged to: "Restore Dignity in the Office of the Presidency!" Anyone (with a grain of intelligence) in our country, or in the entire world believe he achieved his pledge? I'm wondering when he's going to be brought before the Hague and charged with War Crimes Against Humanity?

After two years of Bill Clinton took office the legislature went republican for the first time in 40 years. Yeah, real intelligent. If Obama gets it, in two years the Congress will go republican again. The new voters will again be disenchanted with the democratic rhetoric without substance.

Although he was not my first choice as candidate, I really believe that Barack Obama is a thoughtful and intelligent man who does not trust his blind instincts to the point at which he would rush us into yet more disasters. And that is a lot to offer. Neither McCain not Palin has those qualities, just as Bush and Cheney did not.

How did you republicans like the Tax Increase we all having money in money market accounts got today.... 3% tax.... OUCH.... That Hurt!

All those who played the wise move and moved their money to money market accounts over the weekend to protect their money from the forseeable crash coming this week, were just penalized with a 3% tax on those funds courtesy of the bush administration....

WOW!!! Nobody Seems To Notice!!!

Except those across America whose losses are part of the 1 Trillion dollars lost over the past 3 days in the stock market...

That's just wrong... That's like forcing people who lost bigtime at a casino to pay an "exit fee" on the way out the fuking door.....

Yet republicans are eager to provide corporate welfare to these big corporations (our taxpayer cash by the way).

Who cares if they are Liberal or Conservative (actually a meaningless matrix useful only for selling ads on talk radio). The question is: Are these writers honest or dishonest? Are they right or wrong?

No one believes Sarah Palin is qualified to be President. Not the people who support her; not the people who oppose her and certainly not the smart people who fostered her nomination. She is qualified to bamboozle disgruntled women for a minute while she sucks up the votes of blue-collar men, who seek another excuse to vote out of bigotry & resentment even if that means voting against their family's economic future. She's it. Sarah Palin was nominated to offer a reason for thoughtless bigots to vote against a black man whose policies better fit their economic needs than the predatory and failed policies of the Republican party.

"Sarah Palin was nominated to offer a reason for thoughtless bigots to vote against a black man whose policies better fit their economic needs than the predatory and failed policies of the Republican party."

Where to begin? How about the thoughtless bigots who care more for moose than unborn babies. How about thoughtless bigots who find old people funny and incompetent. How about thoughtless bigots who use a black man as a weapon for their socialist agenda? A man with the fewest credentials for president of any candidate in history, white or black. This from the party of Spitzer, Clinton, Edwards, et al. A party of Carter, Dukakis, Gore and Kerry. A party of losers who need tokens to get it up in the morning politically.

Two years after Bill Clinton slimed his way into office the Congress went republican for the first time in 40 years. Be careful what you wish for. Your days in the cold political wilderness were earned by the ignorant policies of liberals.

As the economic consequences of irresponsible deregulation unfold. That lead should turn to a flood.

Bad regulation is a drag on good business. Deregulation is good thing. These problems are not unintended consequences of policies set by those who believe in free enterprise; this is the equivalent of banking deregulation that sold keys to the doors than gave away the combination to the safe.

Allowing these foxes to guard the henhouse with predatory deregulation — of the sort that set up the S&L crisis and now the mortgage crisis — is not an error in judgement; it is a criminal conspiracy. This criminal conspiracy was led by Phil Gramm, Chris Cox & Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, John McCain. It should be noted, that even if he is too ignorant to understand the economic consequences of his actions, this is not the first time Senator McCain has enabled such criminality.

It was 'Foreclosure Phil' Gramm and Rich Lugar who wrote (with the help of their Enron posse) the 'Modernization Act'; burying most of the regulations that had prevented companies like Enron from behaving like a drunken sailor on a binge. Once Enron was done destroying thousands of Americans - it was the Mortgage Markets turn. The same Modernization Act is the de-regulation bill that has allowed the Housing markets to do the same- but this time it is worse, much worse.
Why in hell it was not changed or overturned after the Enron Debacle we can lay right in Dick Cheney and GW's collective laps.
Where John McCain comes in is his long time friendship with Phil and Rich and his statement that 'since he didn't know too much about the economy, he was going to rely on Phil Gramms advice...

Oh Joy.

She has demonstrated she is a problem solver, a task taker, a quick learner and a hands on person. She will do good. Obama is always bad news, just like any communist. He always said the country is doing bad, we are bitter, we cling to guns and religions, there's nothing to be proud of, is bad to be rich, is bad to struggle for what you want. He and his wife are cry babies and he wants all Americans to have a pitty party and feel sorry for ourselves and then he the "saviour" comes and gives us all a book of welfare stamps so we can have it easy. The spreading of misery continues. This is the first time I hear people in politics making fun of someone because he is old. This is one of the countries where old people are most respected. For the first time in my entire life I hear "in America" that being rich is wrong and that middle class has to unite to bring down rich people. Where does the American dream go? I thought we were supposed to get better each time. Obama is running to run our lives and to settle for what he wants to give us. He is encouraging Americans to be irresponsible and leave their lives in his hands. No way.
Vote McCain.

I've no Problem with Sarah Palin as Governor of Alaska. That's their problem. But, as a potential US president, she's ridiculously under-qualified.

"... communist" Really? What a dumb slur to make in 2008. t Is this trash-talk regurgitated pablum from Rush Limbaugh? Sounds like him. None of what you wrote makes sense. No one has talked about individual responsibility more responsibly or honestly than Senator Obama. No one in this campaign has lived with more integrity and decency than Barack Obama's. CERTAINLY NOT hot-shot, jet-jockey-playboy, John McCain. No group shows more professional interest in running citizen's lives than the Republican party that uses religious bigotry to impose government control on us; they appoint judges to take away "criminal's rights" (hint: there's no such a thing as a 'criminal's right;' there are only rights they take away from us). Get a clue; it's time to stop listening to what Republicans say and to watch what they do.

I supported John McCain in 2000. I don't now. Not because he's gotten older, but because he sold his soul to get the nomination of a bigoted, backward, brain-dead Republican Party run by theocratic fascists, who have zero interest in my rights to live free of government intrusion or in protecting free enterprise from manipulation by criminals, Hell, if I were willing to put up with that sort of government, I could live in Russia.

You are The Boss... which team would you hire?~~~~~~~~~~~

With America facing historic debt, multiple war fronts, stumbling health care, a weakened dollar, all-time high prison population, skyrocketing Federal spending, mortgage crises, bank foreclosures, etc. etc., this is an unusually critical election year. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Let's look at the educational background of your two options:~~~~~~~~

Obama:~~~~
Occidental College - Two years.
Columbia University - B.A. political science with a specialization in international relations.~~~~
Harvard - (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

& Biden: ~~~~
University of Delaware - B.A. in history and B.A. in political science.
Syracuse University College of Law - (J.D.) ~~~~~~~~~~~

vs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

McCain: ~~~~~~
United States Naval Academy - Class rank 894 of 899 ~~~~~~~~~

& Palin: ~~~~~
Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester ~~
North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study~~~
University of Idaho - 2 semesters – journalism ~~~
Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester ~~~~
University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in journalism ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now, which team are you going to hire ? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Most reputable employers don't go just on the college or post-high school education alone. Prestigious schooling sometimes produces outstanding individuals but it can just as often produce pretentious individuals too much aware of the prestige of their education

If all it took to be POTUS is an impressive academic background Jimmy Carter would have had a second term and Adali Stevenson would have hammered Ike in '52. And we all recall that Bill Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar and that W . . . well, let's just leave it at that!

You will have to admit, the Rethuglians know how to party though.

From Monday morning to Monday evening, a befuddled John McCain changed the definition of "fundamentals of the economy"..instead of the STRUCTURE...now he wants us to think it is/he means "The AMERICAN WORKER"
does he think we are idiots?
connect the dots!!! Keating 5...Phil Gramm...McCain...deregulation...subrime mortgage crisis...Monday's Wall St meltdown
not only don't I trust McCain to FIX the economy, I hold him responsible for BREAKING IT!!!!

and his choice of Palin is an insult to the American people...she is in no way ready to be President

Does he think we are idiots? No, but he knows there are just enough to put him in the White House.

History Rewind: do you remember how many people continue to believe that Iraq was directly tied to the 9/11 attack? Do you remember how W claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws? How about the sham of an presidental election in 2000? How about the ginning up of war, invading a sovereign nation that posed no imminent threat to the US? The Bush Doctrine? Dick Cheney - the shadow POTUS.
