I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Revolt

David Brooks writes in the New York Times that Sarah Palin is unqualified:

In the current Weekly Standard, Steven Hayward argues that the nation's founders wanted uncertified citizens to hold the highest offices in the land. They did not believe in a separate class of professional executives. They wanted rough and rooted people like Palin.

I would have more sympathy for this view if I hadn't just lived through the last eight years. For if the Bush administration was anything, it was the anti-establishment attitude put into executive practice.

And the problem with this attitude is that, especially in his first term, it made Bush inept at governance. It turns out that governance, the creation and execution of policy, is hard. It requires acquired skills. Most of all, it requires prudence.

...

Sarah Palin has many virtues. If you wanted someone to destroy a corrupt establishment, she'd be your woman. But the constructive act of governance is another matter. She has not been engaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness.

Ross Douthat agrees at the Atlantic:

Now that we've seen the entirety of the Palin-Gibson tete-a-tete, I concur with Rich Lowry and Rod Dreher. The most that can be said in her defense is that she kept her cool and avoided any brutal gaffes; other than that, she seemed about an inch deep on every issue outside her comfort zone. Yes, the questions were tougher than the ones that a Tim Kaine or Tim Pawlenty probably would have been handed, but they were all questions that a vice-presidential nominee needs to be able to answer. And there's no way to look at her performance as anything save supporting evidence for the non-hysterical critique of her candidacy - that it's just too much, too soon - and a splash of cold water for those of us with high hopes for her future on the national stage.

And in the Washington Post, Richard Cohen goes off on McCain, seizing on the Palin pick as a sign of how far gone the candidate is:

McCain has turned ugly. His dishonesty would be unacceptable in any politician, but McCain has always set his own bar higher than most. He has contempt for most of his colleagues for that very reason: They lie. He tells the truth. He internalizes the code of the McCains -- his grandfather, his father: both admirals of the shining sea. He serves his country differently, that's all -- but just as honorably. No more, though.

...

His opportunistic and irresponsible choice of Sarah Palin as his political heir -- the person in whose hands he would leave the country -- is a form of personal treason, a betrayal of all he once stood for. Palin, no matter what her other attributes, is shockingly unprepared to become president. McCain knows that. He means to win, which is all right; he means to win at all costs, which is not.

Wow...that statement below is so typical coming from a blind wannabe Democrat..

I love how these Obama supporters a using the fame of Obama as being "chic" to now get involved in politics.

They will wear this out just like a Fall fashion and never show up in Nov.

read the comments here - as many pages as you can stomach - then recall that this is America after nearly 8 years of "Uniter, not Divider" George W. Bush. It's truly sad to see people who'd normally be polite and courteous to each other in public calling one another "idiots", "stupid" ... and those are the nicer ones!

Pray for one thing only: that America heals itself from it's worst enemy, the one that closes minds to facts, turns strangers into haters, and good people into masses for molding by the worst elements among us. That enemy is IDEOLOGY

brenner21, people are tired of being complacent towards the RePUBE''s when the RePUBE's doesn't show that for us, the AMERICAN people. Why don't you go to the more extreme right wing boards and read their comments about those on the left and Dems. It will curl your hair. Spare us the "appeal for decency" when the RePUBE's haven't shown that towards those who disagree with them.

But I feel that is why we must rise above the pettiness. Leading by example is (in my opinion) the best way to start getting over this divided country. If people on both sides can start focusing on building this country up instead of tearing each other down we will be miles ahead of where we are now. However that doesn't mean ignoring the lies and half-truths from both sides.

It's sad that Churches and Seminaries (I'm a grad of one) don't teach about who the hunters were in the Bible. They were not considered to be chosen by God (Esau and Nimrod, etc.) and Jesus' disciples left their fishing careers to follow Him.

David Brooks in today's NY Times: "How is prudence acquired? Through experience. The prudent leader possesses a repertoire of events, through personal involvement or the study of history, and can apply those models to current circumstances to judge what is important and what is not, who can be persuaded and who can’t, what has worked and what hasn’t."
Sorry, David, but prudence, or wisdom, is not a function of experience, but of the ability to LEARN from experience, which requires openness of mind and connectedness in feeling. The development of prudence comes from flexibility, empathy, patience and emotional intelligence. That is why Sarah Palin, with so little experience, AND John McCain, with so much, are both not qualified to be president and vice president. You almost got it right... again, David. Keep trying.

More David Brooks, speaking either too early or with scant understanding, "If you wanted someone to destroy a corrupt establishment, she'd be your woman."
David and the rest of America is about to find out that Sister Sarah is just another corrupt member of the corrupt establishment, - far from someone who would destroy it.

a handful of conservative journalist have pointed out that Palin is not capable of being VP let alone POTUS and have also noted the pathological lying the McCain camp is doing but yet the people still buy this guys BS. What is it going to take to get people to wake up and realize the McCain campaign has no idea how to run the country and are just BSing their way through it.
How is it that obscure pick for VP can refuse to talk to the media or even take questions from supporters at their own rallies and the only thing we know about her is what has been put out by the McCain campaign and the only words she has spoken are the ones carefully prepared for her, how is anyone supposed to make an informed opinion about Her, and they're getting away with it...ridiculous

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:44 PM on 09/17/2008

They won't get away with it much longer. NBC Nightly News tonight just aired a piece about all Palin's untruths and exaggerations (they didn't call them lies). Keeping Palin away from the press, even though the McCain campaign thought it was a good idea at the time, just made reporters angry - angry enough to keep digging into what she's already said , in fact repeated over and over.

The campaign is in a no-win situation. By picking her as the VP candidate they caused a firestorm of attention to her. Now what are they supposed to do with her? They can't let her talk to the press for fear of her making a huge gaffe if she's asked a real question, and they can't keep her away or the press will just pick at what they already know about her. It's a joy to watch.

Sen. Obama, nice job approving your AD. You know, the one making fun of Sen. McCain's inability to type on a computer keyboard. Hey, he can't tie his shoes either. Or dress himself completely.

Sen. McCain was using and flying computer-guided Navy fighter jets not long after you learned how to WALK, and your mom was changing your “PullUps”.

Obviously YOU don't know how to use technology, because if you would have made a very complicated GOOGLE search, you'd know WHY he can't send an email.

Sure is nice when someone makes THEMSELVES look like a Dunce... you and your crew are an embarassment to this country.

Too easy.

I am so tired of that canard. I personally know paraplegics, quadriplegics and blind people who use the internet, IM and text, and have no problems with email at all. If McCain really thinks (and it's been pointed out that it isn't HIM saying his war wounds make it difficult, it's the parrots) that he can't use email or the internet because using a keyboard is too painful, then he is even more technologically challenged and out of touch with the world than the Obama ad suggested. I used to teach computer classes in a neighborhood center and my very first and most eager student was an 84 year old woman who was so excited at the prospect of being able to communicate with her penpals in Finland, Italy and Kenya. Maybe she could teach him a thing or two about technology - and Palin a thing or two about foriegn policy.

McCain has no trouble barbecuing on his grills in his 7 backyards, has no trouble squeezing lemons or fidgeting with his wedding ring, and there are plenty of photos of him using blackberrys and cell phones. I don't buy it. And as far tieing his shoes, when someone wears five-hundred-dollar loafers, I doubt they even need tieing... at his income level, he'd get tailor-made custom-fit shoes.

I have a great concern about Palin-McCain attitude towards the law, and feel that PALIN and her handlers HAVE DECLARED WAR AGAINST THE RULE OF LAW. This is a very important issue for anyone aspiring to be our leader, and we should all be concerned! This is the first impression we are developing about Palin since her emergence on the national stage. What are we to make of the fact that she is encouraging disregard for the law in Alaska! By refusing to testify before a duly constituted legislative investigative panel, and her Attorney General refusing that state employees should answer to subpoenas served on them, Palin is showing contempt for the law that one sees in the Bush approach to governing. McCain and Co., by reasons of convenience, might shout to us about a "witch hunt" against Palin. By comparison, Republicans expected Democrats to comply with Subpoenas from Kenneth Starr in his investigation of the Clintons and associates which many saw as simply over-reaching and biased. The Clintons complied! Palin would not. From this single act of disobedience, how can the nation expect that Palin, McCain and Co. will uphold the laws of the land should they ever get to the White House? Yet, this is among the most sacred obligation of high state officials--to uphold the laws of the United States! What is left for us to teach our children about the rule of law if those in high office would not respect it?

Dr. Sam

Indeed, why should anyone obey the law if those in the highest positions in America refuse? This has been my concern since GW Bush has been revealed to be a flouter of the law, and now it extends to McCain and Palin.

They won't feel motivated to comply with the law until Karl Rove is taken on a perp walk for snubbing his nose at the courts. Make an example of this uber-criminal, for God's sake!

Dems get a spine!

Indeed. If the people in the highest office in the land demonstrate that they they are free to ignore the laws they don't like, then why should we pay our taxes if we don't like paying taxes? The most simple, most compelling logic I've ever heard.

This so fundamentally serious that , she should not be allowed to be running for yet a higher office, unless she complies to the subpoenas. Since she did nothing wrong, what is the problem with complying with the law of the land????

Dr Sam, you are right on the money! I am at a loss as to figure out why these people can refuse to answer subpoenas. Wouldn't the ordinary citizen be sent to jail for refusing to answer them??
It makes the whole U.S justice system seem like a farce when there is no enforcment of the law. The standards should be even higher for public officials in the government.
I say "keep on dogging them" until they back down under pressure.

What would happen if McCain kicked the bucket before the election? Would the Republicans run Sarah Palin as president or quickly choose someone else, continuing with her as the VP? What if he was elected but gave up the ghost before he was inaugurated? Would that make Palin the president and Nancy Pelosi the VP?

I supported Hillary, too. I respected her intelligence, her experience, her judgment -- and her pluck. She made the good ol' boys sit DOWN and pay attention.

But I now support the Obama/Biden ticket for the same reasons that NOW supports it, for the same reasons that civil rights leaders support it, for the same reasons that many centrist and thinking men and women support it -- because we can't bear to see another four years of neoconservatist hubris in the White House, because we can't bear the thought of a Supreme Court dominated by jurists who would roll back decades of progress on civil rights, employee rights, women's rights, and reproductive rights, because we can't bear to see more and more men and women shipped off to fight a war that was never fully explained or justified to the American people.

If you want to vote for McCain/Palin -- as ill-advised as I think that would be -- that's your acknowledged right. But don't do so on the pretext that you are doing it in support of Hillary, when you would be betraying the things for which Sen. Clinton -- and her most ardent supporters -- worked. Because that would be a smokescreen as thick as the one that John McCain and Sarah Palin are trying to throw up.

Barack might have picked Hillary if she hadn't had the excess baggage (can't keep my pants zipped Bill) who would be roaming the halls of the white house looking for interns. You compare Obama's experience to Palin's - what a laugh! He's been through 27 debates, one that was moderated by "Charlie" (Sarah said his name a hundred times to make it look like he is her BFF) Gibson where he scathed both parties with his questioning. McCain's campaign obviously doesn't trust her to speak to anyone without scripting. If something were to happen to Barack, I'd surely rather have Joe Biden in the Presidency, with more foreign affairs experience than McCain, than Palin, whose been the mayor of a town of 5,000 and a Governor for less than 2 years.
God forbid that McCain wins this election with his lies. I can see it now: the pitbull in lipstick helping the old man down the road to nowhere. THANKS, BUT NO THANKS! WAKE UP OBAMA SUPPORTERS AND ELECT THE MOST BRILLIANT CANDIDATE THAT AMERICA HAS HAD IN YEARS!

It IS a sad thing to see the death of a tell-it-like-it-is independent -- the John McCain he used to be. McCain's traded a lot for a few measly points in a Republican push poll -- his to-hell-with-it-I'm-not-kowtowing-to-you-bullies independence, his reputation for straight talk and plain dealing, his own antiquated-but-valiant-and-self-defining moral code.

As man who seems perpetually haunted by the good-opinion and "faith of his fathers," McCain surely must realize -- deep down -- that you can't sell your soul to the lying, two-faced, bigoted Devil without having some price to pay, in the end.

The first casualty is your own self-respect. Disclaiming your own rough-hewed but personal ideals, kissing up to those who flung mud at your own wife and children, contradicting yourself again and again because you no longer know who you are or what you stand for -- unless it is a victory. What would McCain's father and grandfather think of him if they knew?
