I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Revolt

David Brooks writes in the New York Times that Sarah Palin is unqualified:

In the current Weekly Standard, Steven Hayward argues that the nation's founders wanted uncertified citizens to hold the highest offices in the land. They did not believe in a separate class of professional executives. They wanted rough and rooted people like Palin.

I would have more sympathy for this view if I hadn't just lived through the last eight years. For if the Bush administration was anything, it was the anti-establishment attitude put into executive practice.

And the problem with this attitude is that, especially in his first term, it made Bush inept at governance. It turns out that governance, the creation and execution of policy, is hard. It requires acquired skills. Most of all, it requires prudence.

...

Sarah Palin has many virtues. If you wanted someone to destroy a corrupt establishment, she'd be your woman. But the constructive act of governance is another matter. She has not been engaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness.

Ross Douthat agrees at the Atlantic:

Now that we've seen the entirety of the Palin-Gibson tete-a-tete, I concur with Rich Lowry and Rod Dreher. The most that can be said in her defense is that she kept her cool and avoided any brutal gaffes; other than that, she seemed about an inch deep on every issue outside her comfort zone. Yes, the questions were tougher than the ones that a Tim Kaine or Tim Pawlenty probably would have been handed, but they were all questions that a vice-presidential nominee needs to be able to answer. And there's no way to look at her performance as anything save supporting evidence for the non-hysterical critique of her candidacy - that it's just too much, too soon - and a splash of cold water for those of us with high hopes for her future on the national stage.

And in the Washington Post, Richard Cohen goes off on McCain, seizing on the Palin pick as a sign of how far gone the candidate is:

McCain has turned ugly. His dishonesty would be unacceptable in any politician, but McCain has always set his own bar higher than most. He has contempt for most of his colleagues for that very reason: They lie. He tells the truth. He internalizes the code of the McCains -- his grandfather, his father: both admirals of the shining sea. He serves his country differently, that's all -- but just as honorably. No more, though.

...

His opportunistic and irresponsible choice of Sarah Palin as his political heir -- the person in whose hands he would leave the country -- is a form of personal treason, a betrayal of all he once stood for. Palin, no matter what her other attributes, is shockingly unprepared to become president. McCain knows that. He means to win, which is all right; he means to win at all costs, which is not.

Token who are you calling a token ? McSame is 72 years old for God sake. Your people choose him because he is a repug. Not because they really want him for President. Most of the conservitives can't stand him. He can't stand them either. Oh what is the saying, lesser of two evils. You repugs are such fools. How many folks out their really think that Grandpa @ 70ish can even drive to the store or watch the grand kids for more then an hour. He is going to run this country that is messed up already PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSe.

McCain always deflects comments about his age by pointing to his aged mother. But, he never mentions his father who died at age 70 (1911 -1981). With four melanoma operations, I'd say McCain is living on borrowed time right now.

John McCain has some mighty big shoes to fill. His father and his grandfather were Admirals in the Navy. They were tough, rough and ready for any fight. Their life revolved around accomplishments in the U.S. Military. Poor little John, who wasn't all that bright, chose to fly naval airplanes. Unfortunately he crashed five of them before being captured and imprisoned in the Hannoi Jail for five years. He deserves a lot of credit for surviving and then being elected to the U.S. Senate. But his father and grandfather had been Admirals! The only way McCain could prove his rightful place at the top of the McCain hierarchy would be as President of the United States. So that was his goal. Unfortunately time was running out. He was getting too old to be a creditable candidate. He couldn't quite remember things and couldn't work the new fangled technological gadgets. Enter the religious neo-conservatives. They have money, time, an agenda and God on their side. They would share their wealth, sponsor a V.P. and get John McCain elected. He would finally have more power and money than the admirals.

After Dubya, I should think the nation has had quite enough of presidential candidates (and presidents) with Uresolved Daddy Issues. It has been argued, and rightfully I believe, that Dubya's own Daddy Issues are what got the entire nation into this unwise Iraq War. Billions of dollars, thousands of lives later here we are . . . poised to elect yet another over-reaching son.

"My fellow citizens, the American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of "personal discovery."

Question: What about the democratic nominee? Experience? At what? We have to elect someone, dummy. She has the same credentials that Bill Clinton had when he took office.

Palin has been Governor for 19 months. 19 months--that's all. Bill Clinton was governor for ten years. He chaired the National Governors association. Prior to being governor, he was attorney general for Arkansas. He went to law school and was a Rhodes Scholar. What part of that sounds like Palin's resume?
As for Obama, 8 years in the state senate, 4 years in the US senate, 12 years teaching constitutional law, 25+ national debates running for president. Again, what part of that sounds like Palin's resume?

She may have the same experience, but not the same intelligence......Rhodes scholar vs. Bachelors Degree in Journalism after attending 5 small schools. His IQ has been rumored to be near 182, her's I would guess to be average. She rose to her position through "brashness", boldness does not equal intelligence. Teenagers are known for their boldness and brashness, invincibility complex, Ms. Palin could be said to possess the same qualities. We might as well put Miley Cyrus on the ticket.

Except Bill was governor for what, 11 more years than she's been? Of a more populous state, he'd traveled the world and was a Rhodes scholar, a student at Harvard and not a journalism major at some back water college (or 5 backwater colletges)

My God, going back to our founding fathers and what they wanted for a president could in no way reflect the world we live in now. America was a frontier then and much of what was set up as government here had a lot to do with political practice in England, i.e., a monarchy! In that light, of course our founding fathers wanted a government lead by ordinary people, meaning they were not of royalty or wealth, yet not the bottom of the barrel in intelligence. Jefferson, Adams, Hancock, and the like were very intelligent, cream of the crop, common people of that time. Flash ahead to the 21st century with a global economic world and that intelligent, cream of the crop common people leader better be bumped up a notch, say Harvard/Columbia graduate with common everyday background to ground and guide him to be of, by, and for the people. How about a VP that refused to leave his children's bedsides to be sworn in as a new senator, with world wide political credentials, and much political savvy to boot. When I think of Biden and his children, and Sarah dragging her youngest baby around like a rag doll to claw her way up, it makes me sick.

Sorry, David Brooks, but "prudence," or wisdom, is not a function of experience, but of the ability to LEARN from experience, which requires openness of mind and connectedness in feeling. The development of prudence comes from flexibility, empathy, patience and emotional intelligence. That is why Sarah Palin, with so little experience, AND John McCain, with so much, are both not qualified to be president and vice president.
You almost got it right... again, David. Keep trying.

No. The Dems will probably lose this year because most Uhmericans are like you : mouth-breathing, knuckle-draggers who always vote out of spite rather than on the issues.

What else explains the polls showing undeclared white women supporting McGhoul-Pale? Why are the polls even close? Either the mass of "American Idol" loving, mid-Western, haus fraus (and haus herrs, for that matter) are caught up in eye-popping, rock-and-roll hysteria over the criminally ill-prepared, far-right Palin out of spite over Hillary's primary result, or they're just blatant racists.

I don't know why you far-right trolls waste so much energy in spittle-flying, vein-popping anger - don't you realize you've won? The US leans so far to the right, it's a miracle the folks on the East Coast don't fall into the Atlantic. Honestly, if it were easy to change your citizenship, I'd have moved to Canada long ago. The people of this country already drink your brand of Kool-Aid, so just sit back and laugh. Progressives have been reduced to the status of clowns, and the MSM is in your hip pocket. Now go yuck it up with Bill O and Rush.

You are very bitter. Why all of the name calling? Democrats are using the old socialist playbook with NO new ideas! What new ideas do they have? Banning guns? Banning homeschooling? That is what Hitler did in Nazi Germany. How about socialized medicine? More regulation and more taxes on business? This is what the democrats will bring...it IS about the issues...but democrats always lie to get elected..."No, we do really love Amerika and we are not socialists," yeah right...

Trustable? He lies. You can sit and watch him lie between videos of his past comments and what he says now. Fact is fact. It's not a matter of opinion. And Palin???? What an amateur. How she can make anyone feel secure in this world is beyond me. The only thing Republicans can like about her is to know she is just a blank slate/pawn and big corporate America will be running her puppet. You must be one of the fat cats to like this team.

Oh and your boys did a great job of running American into the ground these past 8 years, did that solidify your trust in the GOP? Please wake up.

Not just columnists but many patriotic citizen are starting to get seriously concerned about McCain's constant switches of his politics. His latest change from free marketeer and proponent of deregulation to advocate of government control is even less believable than his previous contortions.

The reckless and irresponsible VP selection of a hopelessly unqualified cultist worries many patriotic citizens of both parties. The frightening scenario of the fate of 300 million people left in the hands of such a person is an absolute nightmare.

This could be Geraldine Ferraro. I've read interviews with her recently and she has said she may vote McCain/Palin due to the gender issue. She seems like she's stuck in this old-fashioned, gender identity politicking mode. I was horrified that she would publicly state that she was even considering voting Republican simply because Hillary's "gynecological twin" was on their ticket - talk about cutting off our noses to spite her face. I say this as someone who wanted us to be on the sixteen year plan: eight of Hillary followed by eight of Obama, but frankly, I'm just as happy with Obama, especially now that we've seen how brilliantly and effectively he's handled his campaign. I just don't see how voting for a woman who doesn't support equal pay for equal work, wants to roll back Roe v. Wade, and very obviously lacks the level of intelligence and thoughtfulness needed to be taken seriously for this position could possibly be considered a positive step for women. So we should vote for a uterus, any uterus? Ferraro sold out both her gender and her country with those comments.

Nice to hear some honesty from the right. But "if you wanted someone to destroy a corrupt establishment, she'd be your woman"? Where did that come from? The abuse of power, the e-mail mess, the Bridge to Nowhere, for which she said "Please, Thanks, whoops, No Thanks, but I'll just keep the money"? And we've only known about her for two weeks!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:43 AM on 09/17/2008

Sarah Palin kicked out the old guard--allegedly a fight against corruption but actually getting rid of the backstabbers. She also--remember this--raised funds for, and supported Ted Stevens, hardly a paragon of clean governance. An earmarks queen while governor, she now conveniently opposes them from the VP candidate's soapbox. A reliable double-talker and has proved it repeatedly.

What she is, is likeable. Invites your friendship, if female, and possibly more, if male.
All con artists and sales personnel are likeable, and I believe we are about to be sold a commodities-scale market of manure.
