Financial Times:

Barack Obama fought to regain the initiative in the presidential race on Tuesday as the Wall Street financial crisis threatened to stall the recent burst of momentum behind John McCain.

The banking meltdown has thrust the economy back to the centre of the campaign, giving Mr Obama a chance to hit back after two weeks of declining poll numbers and escalating Republican attacks.

I just took the following poll:

Based on how many lies they tell in front of the American people without apology, and going on the assumption that lying is bad, which campaign is a better role model for our nation's kids?

Obama/Biden
McCain/Palin

This morning I noticed pundits defending with a straight face McCain's proposal to create a commission to study "what went wrong." Are they serious? Based on these pundits' statements, this panel would be manned buy just those financial wizards that got us in this mess to begin with. It would constitute nothing more than putting the fox in charge of the hen house. Clearly, McCain does not believe in the adage "the buck stops here." Meanwhile, Obama responded like a leader, saying we know what went wrong (the purposeful deregulation of the markets coupled with deceit and greed in order to further enrich the rich and leave everyone else treading water), and that we need to fix the problem. Why is it that, once again, the bar is set so low for the Republican candidate, while no matter how articulate, forceful, and clear the Democrat is, the punditry says, "jump higher.?

To McDrill from Carly, not the Carly (Fiorina) you threw under the bus for a gaffe, but Carly Simon's 'You're So Vain':

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye on the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that theyd be your partner
Theyd be your partner, and...

Youre so vain, you probably think this song is about you
Youre so vain, Ill bet you think this song is about you
Dont you? dont you?

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and...

I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and...
Well I hear you went up to saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your lear jet up to nova scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well youre where you should be all the time
And when youre not youre with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend.....

And the Republicans are so good at name calling - the democrats are the Socialists - transferring wealth to the poor and undeserving.

Only the rich deserve more money -especially our tax dollars - after all they are the Capitalists.....

Sept. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Republican presidential nominee John McCain said the U.S. government should let American International Group Inc. fail to prevent the financial burden from being placed on taxpayers.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a3QsD0.948uc&refer=home

The above statement show how out of touch Mc Same is.

A meltdown could have cost the financial industry $180 billion, according to RBC Capital Markets.

``Nobody really knows what it would have meant if they would have been allowed to fail, but there was an enormous amount of systemic risk,'' said David Havens, a credit analyst at UBS AG in Stamford, Connecticut. ``It's an enormous relief.''

“We are working closely with the Federal Reserve, the SEC and other regulators to enhance the stability and orderliness of our financial markets and minimise the disruption to our economy,” said Hank Paulson, Treasury secretary. “I support the steps taken by the Federal Reserve tonight to assist AIG in continuing to meet its obligations, mitigate broader disruptions and at the same time protect the taxpayers.”

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/271257f2-83f1-11dd-bf00-000077b07658.html

After meeting with George W. Bush, the U.S. President, on Tuesday, it was agreed that consequences of letting AIG fail were too catastrophic for the financial system.

so true. i would add that in addition to revisiting naomi klein's "shock doctrine" that charlie savage's book "takeover" should be added to the reading list. it is chilling at best, and if you can read more than a few pages at a time without a vein popping in your forehead it will be a minor miracle.

Iranian Leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be at New York next week. ...So will Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton and thousands of protesters.

Governor Sarah Palin will join Hillary Clinton at the United Nations on Monday for a massive anti-Ahmadinejad rally sponsored by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

Yesterday the JTA posted the announcement:

Sarah Palin will speak at next week’s Jewish-sponsored rally to protest Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the United Nations.

In addition to Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee and Alaska governor, confirmed speakers include U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), an Iranian dissident, a black minister and Jewish and Israeli leaders, according to a key group organizing the rally, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

“The speakers represent the broad spectrum of American political life,” the group’s executive vice chairman, Malcolm Hoenlein, told JTA.

UPDATE: Hillary bails-- won't attend the pro-Israel event. She did not want to be seen on a stage with Sarah Palin, via the AP:

Clinton aides were furious. They first learned of the plan to have both Clinton and Palin appear when informed by reporters. "Her attendance was news to us, and this was never billed to us as a partisan political event," said Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines. "Sen. Clinton will therefore not be attending."

So,Hillary says it would be too partisan having both appear at the rally? Gotta love the perspective of those dems. Nice!

Remember this was in december of 1999, Bush had already been elected, there was a majority in the Senate and House. Phil Gramm waited until people were going on vaction and slipped this into a 250 page bill which frankly, most didn't read. McCain knew exactly what was in this bill and he signed it. By the time people realized what was happening, the new financial industry was in full swing. The bill you are referring to is Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. Most people agree that this is the bill that layed the groundwork for what we are experiencing now! McCain has Gramm as his economic adviser and plans to name him as Sect of the Treasury!

Actually, no, the election was in 2000 not 1999. I've been looking through the Frontline features, I think I'll figure it out better there.

It's too bad that these big companies are being bailed out but the working Americans whose homes foreclosed get nothing no help at all even though their taxes will be used for these bailouts. It's all so unfair especially when we're already hurting economically in this mess the repubs have created.

Be a little grateful that they saved AIG (another corporate welfare queen) you wouldn't have wanted to see the fallout from that particular one.

Say - experts, another question. Why did Suze Orman suggest that the AIG bailout would have been 20 billion instead of 85 billion last Friday? Did the damage go up merely because of the Lehman Brothers massacre?

I agree with the decision to prop up AIG. I don't think they had any choice.

Still, it's a horrible precedent. The trick is to run it SO poorly, and take such lunatic risk, that you're "too big to fail".

They'll learn nothing.

Are you aware that we just gave Georgia ( no not OUR Georgia) $1 billion. This money is not on the books and our government went behind our backs to give money to a country that provoked Russia. I find this a serious problem and once again points out the secrecy and deceit of the Republicans. Bush is quiet on the financial problems in HIS country and in HIS administration and HIS people! Why would we put this GOP party back in office. Someone has to give me a credible answer to that quesiton! Oh and the first thing out of your mouth can't be Obama. Obama didn't create this mess, Bush, McCain and Gramm did!
