PHILADELPHIA — Elizabeth Edwards said Tuesday she is discouraged that health care is falling on the nation's list of priorities and critiqued the plans of both leading presidential candidates.

In her first public talk since her husband, two-time Democratic presidential candidate and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, publicly admitted to an extramarital affair, Elizabeth Edwards confined her remarks to health coverage _ an issue that forced itself into her own top priorities after a 2004 cancer diagnosis.

She said the financial crisis that has shaken Wall Street may demand national attention and money that would otherwise be invested in fixing the health care system.

"I'm more discouraged than I was before," she said during a talk at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. "Shame on us if we don't take the momentum _ even with all the other things that are happening _ and translate it into a policy."

Edwards said she sparred with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama over his health care policy, which mandates insurance for children but doesn't require coverage for adults.

And she had almost nothing good to say about the health care plan of Republican hopeful John McCain, charging that it would simply lower costs by forcing bare-bones policies.

Audience members asked no questions about her private life. Edwards did not mention the affair.

Through her public bout with breast cancer, which disappeared after a long round of treatments but resurfaced in early 2007 in an incurable form, Edwards has become a respected speaker on health care policy.

But she's been quiet about her latest hardship, only discussing the infidelity in a brief statement last month in which she pleaded for privacy and said that her husband had disclosed the liaison in 2006.

That statement set off a round of criticism aimed at her, as Democrats said she was too willing to keep the affair a secret to help her husband's political ambitions, as well as her own.

John Edwards has canceled all of his public events until after the election, saying in a statement through his publicist he doesn't want to be a distraction to his party's ticket.

He admitted in early August that he had an affair with a woman hired to produce videos of him in 2006. She remained on the campaign trail during the opening days of his presidential bid at the end of that year.

Thank you , Elizabeth, for speaking out and giving voice to the millions of Americans who do not have health care insurance and do not have a voice. I have heard that people without health insurance who get cancer have a 30%-50% greater chance of dying that those with health insurance.

America has one of the most inefficient health care systems in the world. We are number one in terms of health care spending, number 37th (per the World Health Organization) in terms of life expectancy, infant mortality, etc. Private insurers siphon off about 10% to 30% of their intake for overhead (processing and profits). In contrast, Medicare spends about 3% on overhead. More Americans die early for lack of health care than Americans die serving in Iraq. Thanks for bringing attention to this issue.

Maybe it wouldn't be that way if she was still trying to bring leadership on health care. Her and her husband have both been no-shows since he dropped out. Im sure Obama would've given her a roll in his campaign had she wanted that platform.

I think you meant "role".
And I don't think you meant to criticize a woman who is gracefully navigating her own imminent mortality and the past infidelity of her husband.

I really, really for sorry for Elizabeth Edwards. With all of the wealth and promise this family has suffered much grief. Sometimes the grief goes on for years and years, and with high powered people who have to keep going on, sometimes the grief surfaces in other ways. That may have happened to the Edwards.
I never thought Edwards really wanted to be president. I always thought he had pushed as hard because of ego and Elizabeth. There was always something about him that kept me from fully embracing him, even when he ran with John Kerry. Now I know I was right. I still feel very badly for Elizabeth. She is carrying the incredible dual burdens of her mortality, and her husband's infidelity. That is something I wouldn't wish on any woman. Even one I didn't like. Elizabeth didn't deserve this, and neither did her kids.

So you just knew he had an affair or did you not believe a rich man to be serious about combating poverty?

It takes a total lack of compassion to address a woman who's carrying the burden of her own imminent mortality and her husband's infidelity in that manner.

She was complicit in his cover up. She knew of it when he was campaigning. While I feel sorry for her personal pain, I have no respect for her.

Before I say anything else, I have to ask: How ludicrous is it for Democrats to criticize Mrs. Edwards about not sharing embarassing, painful information about her personal life and, additionally, to accuse her of not doing so solely because of her own political ambition? Am I missing something about incurable cancer that doesn't mean fatal? Why would politics be her main priority when she is facing the end of her lifelong path?

As to the complaints she raises regarding health care.... Well, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. That is to say: There are many worthy issues that should be addressed in addition to the 'crisis that has shaken Wall Street' - child abuse/pedophelia, our failing public elementary and high school institutions, etc. And we ought to know that our politicians (no matter how idealized) only respond to concerted and serious outcry and/or appeals from us. More of _us_ have to stand up for the issues we believe in like Mrs. Edwards (who I greatly admire) - write and call our Senators to get legislation passed. Just as much (and maybe more than) as we need Sen.'s Obama and McCain to stand up for us; we need to stand up for ourselves.
07:54 PM on 09/17/2008
It is ludicrous indeed. We all need to stand up, but that requires courage, which many people don't seem to have these days. Just look at some of these posts.

Hi, It is fascinating that when the bottom of the brain overrides the top of the brain, people lose their ability to focus on their real everyday problems....like health care. Elizabeth Edwards is a great example of head and heart. Dr. M
