PHILADELPHIA — Elizabeth Edwards said Tuesday she is discouraged that health care is falling on the nation's list of priorities and critiqued the plans of both leading presidential candidates.

In her first public talk since her husband, two-time Democratic presidential candidate and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, publicly admitted to an extramarital affair, Elizabeth Edwards confined her remarks to health coverage _ an issue that forced itself into her own top priorities after a 2004 cancer diagnosis.

She said the financial crisis that has shaken Wall Street may demand national attention and money that would otherwise be invested in fixing the health care system.

"I'm more discouraged than I was before," she said during a talk at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. "Shame on us if we don't take the momentum _ even with all the other things that are happening _ and translate it into a policy."

Edwards said she sparred with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama over his health care policy, which mandates insurance for children but doesn't require coverage for adults.

And she had almost nothing good to say about the health care plan of Republican hopeful John McCain, charging that it would simply lower costs by forcing bare-bones policies.

Audience members asked no questions about her private life. Edwards did not mention the affair.

Through her public bout with breast cancer, which disappeared after a long round of treatments but resurfaced in early 2007 in an incurable form, Edwards has become a respected speaker on health care policy.

But she's been quiet about her latest hardship, only discussing the infidelity in a brief statement last month in which she pleaded for privacy and said that her husband had disclosed the liaison in 2006.

That statement set off a round of criticism aimed at her, as Democrats said she was too willing to keep the affair a secret to help her husband's political ambitions, as well as her own.

John Edwards has canceled all of his public events until after the election, saying in a statement through his publicist he doesn't want to be a distraction to his party's ticket.

He admitted in early August that he had an affair with a woman hired to produce videos of him in 2006. She remained on the campaign trail during the opening days of his presidential bid at the end of that year.

Elizabeth Edwards and others who care about making America better must communicate that Obama’s platform centers on developing and strengthening the middle class. Health care is important but it is not an organizing principle. Democratic leaders from Franklin Roosevelt through Tip O’Neil understood the importance of developing and strengthening the middle class. This organizing principle kept us from being a country where a few people controlled most of the wealth. Post Tip O’Neil Democrats began focusing on tactical issues and lost a critical understanding about articulating the importance of developing and strengthening the middle class. Now Democratic spokespersons cower when McCain’s campaign asserts that Obama is a tax and spend big government liberal without challenging borrow and spend. $4-trilllion of borrow and spend expenditures are accounted for by two McCain policies. Mitigate or remove regulation from the financial markets = $900 billion and climbing. Taking the U.S. into the Iraq War = $3-trillion. Programs to develop and strengthen the middle class deserve equal debate given that McCain policies assume borrow and spend outcomes. Making comparisons between spending $4-trillion to bail out people on Wall Street or make war in Iraq versus developing a domestic alternative energy industry or creating a better health care system that serves all Americans ought to be easy. Regrettably Democratic spokesperson are not articulately and forcefully communicating the importance developing and strengthening the middle class as an organizing principle that garners voters.

NADER/GONZALEZ are teh only ones who will cover 100% of Americans with Health Insurance
And will take us all out of the war. Not move us to new wars, like the duopoly, take us OUT!
Keep the change

As in 2000, a vote for Nader is a vote for the Republicans. Let's get together for real progress people!

It would be truly amazing if more candidates (meaning more representation of different ideas) could be involved in the political process and not on the sidelines. To actually have something that resembles a Parliament would only make our democracy stronger. I know the argument, there's no time like the present. The problem is that America is not ready to go in that direction anymore than it is ready for national health insurance. We've been indoctrinated and continue to drink the Koolaide. In the meantime, I'd rather my vote go to someone who has a chance of winning. Let's not have another 2000 election where the Supreme Court ends up choosing the President.

Proposal: Congress and all members of the administration should be mandated to receive the "average" healthcare plan of all 350 million residents as determined by an agreed third party. Then you would see action.

Elizabeth, if you want to really start to get everyone healthcare you should cut some YouTube ads supporting Obama and send them out. Highlight that his plan is better - or a better start. Getting this man elected should be your highest priority in the next 50 days if you REALLY want to change the healthcare system. Sitting around in forums complaining while Rome burns will not help. This is the last chance for change for 4 more years.

Elizabeth Edwards deserves to be answered by each candidate what they specifically will do to make this a possibility. HMOs are not the answer for Health Insurance.

Why did this article mention Mr. Edwards? His actions affect his Family only.Health care is a universal problem.

hold up. No one is answerable to Mrs Edwards. Her greed for power led her and her husband to run for the presidency despite what they knew. What if they had been nominated? McCain would have been coasting to victory. She specifically owes the dems and the country an apology

The ONLY one who owes the country an apology, for running when they knew they should not have because it could hurt all of us AND HIS WIFE, would be JOHN EDWARDS. She is not responsible for what he did, nor is she responsible for keeping it a secret. That onus lies on John, and John alone.

I think John and Elizabeth were wrongly villainized (I know it's not a word) by the media over this love child issue. But you can't discard the fact that these people have a lot of passion in helping the working poor and making universal health care happen.

I think it was a shame that a personal issue has negated all the hard work they have done politically. Yet we aren't able to ask Sara Palin about her family: newborn child, daughter's illegitimate pregnancy and the alleged father being a black teenager because it would be considered "sexist". Please wake me up when this nightmare is over!!!

See one of the other items on the Huffington Post:

"New Studies: Obama Healthcare Plan Would Cover 34 Million Uninsured, McCain's Would Cover 5 Million"

This is no time for people like Elizabeth to make an issue about the fact that she is not getting everything she wants in Obama's program.

What makes Elizabeth come out and talk about anyone, when, she knew that if her husband got the nomination we would have certainly lost the election due to scandal. That shows that they both are delusional and ego driven, with no care that this country and the democrats would go down with them.

As a former Edwards supporter, I felt the same way. It's time to cut them some slack, though. What she knew or didn't know is really nobody's business but theirs.
