PHILADELPHIA — Elizabeth Edwards said Tuesday she is discouraged that health care is falling on the nation's list of priorities and critiqued the plans of both leading presidential candidates.

In her first public talk since her husband, two-time Democratic presidential candidate and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, publicly admitted to an extramarital affair, Elizabeth Edwards confined her remarks to health coverage _ an issue that forced itself into her own top priorities after a 2004 cancer diagnosis.

She said the financial crisis that has shaken Wall Street may demand national attention and money that would otherwise be invested in fixing the health care system.

"I'm more discouraged than I was before," she said during a talk at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. "Shame on us if we don't take the momentum _ even with all the other things that are happening _ and translate it into a policy."

Edwards said she sparred with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama over his health care policy, which mandates insurance for children but doesn't require coverage for adults.

And she had almost nothing good to say about the health care plan of Republican hopeful John McCain, charging that it would simply lower costs by forcing bare-bones policies.

Audience members asked no questions about her private life. Edwards did not mention the affair.

Through her public bout with breast cancer, which disappeared after a long round of treatments but resurfaced in early 2007 in an incurable form, Edwards has become a respected speaker on health care policy.

But she's been quiet about her latest hardship, only discussing the infidelity in a brief statement last month in which she pleaded for privacy and said that her husband had disclosed the liaison in 2006.

That statement set off a round of criticism aimed at her, as Democrats said she was too willing to keep the affair a secret to help her husband's political ambitions, as well as her own.

John Edwards has canceled all of his public events until after the election, saying in a statement through his publicist he doesn't want to be a distraction to his party's ticket.

He admitted in early August that he had an affair with a woman hired to produce videos of him in 2006. She remained on the campaign trail during the opening days of his presidential bid at the end of that year.

" Barack Obama over his health care policy, which mandates insurance for children but doesn't require coverage for adults."

Barak Obama's health care policy provides coverage for ALL adults who WANT to be covered. It just does not coerce adults who do not want to be covered to be covered. A mandate coercing adults to be covered when they do not want to be is a poison pill that will guarantee that a program that has such a feature will never get through congress.

It is wonderful to see Elizabeth Edwards talking about health care or frankly, talking about anything. If you want to talk about Profiles in Courage then she is my candidate.

The affair wasn't anybody's business but theirs. You sound like you think they should have sent out announcements or something.

This issue has been talked about for 20 years. At least since the time of George Bush Sr.
President Clinton was elected on this issue and promptly gave Hillary Clinton an entire wing of the Whitehouse to work on this issue and then it fell apart . Ralph Nader has some interesting ideas, its called single payer national health insurance and it will effectively put the HMO's out of controlling everything so they lobby against it,and it sounds like John McCain saying "Do you want a bureaucrat standing between you and your doctor?" but I don't think that's the truth ,it's more like an insurance plan
it just cuts HmO's out of market share which would be good because they are a bit snooty.
I think "of by and for the people" should mean NO HEALTH C ARE PLAN for congress until everyone else has one,no benefits for congress until everyone else has them, and the average median wage is what a congress person should get paid -then you would see improvement. It sure wouldn't take 20 years to get a health plan.

Now if we could only get rid of their health plan, we'll see this government run as a coyote to change things for all faster than we can say UNIVERSAL COVERAGE

So let me get this straight. Our Government steps in to rescue=bail out=nationalize a "private" insurance company with our money (85,000000000000....) and they will not step in and bail out=rescue the patients that need urgent healthcare in U.S with our own money? I cannot wait until all the fat cats in these Healthcare Insurances bring the whole system down after they are done ripping us off their and leaving us in another hole. They'll parachute themselves millions of dollars into retirement...or the next scheme up their sleeves for if anyone notices all these are the same crooks, from one company to the next.

It's about the economy RIGHT NOW. Look, there is still an election happening. Nobody has even had the opportunity to make a healthcare decision yet. The last thing people need to hear is a voice screaming 'can I get slice of pie' as the plane is diving towards the ground.

Seriously...think it through.
WHEN Obama wins and WHEN he stabilizes the trauma. THEN you advocate for real issues to be built on a solid foundation. Not on the shaky ground we now live.

Dems do not need Elizabeth running around attacking our nominee. There are two plans on the table: One would tax the hell out of employer-based heathcare, which the majority of us have, McCain's plan. The other Obama's plan would offer more choice and cover all American children. McCain's is significantly worse.

What is the point here Elizabeth? We have an election to win!

That being said, May God bless you and bring you peace in this difficult hour. I admire and respect all that you do.

"Dems do not need Elizabeth running around attacking our nominee."

Right on! She is acting like Ralph Nader, undercutting our candidate and thereby helping the Republicans.

It is time for Elizabeth to get with the program. The difference between Obama's program and McCain's non-program is like day and night.
