PHILADELPHIA — Elizabeth Edwards said Tuesday she is discouraged that health care is falling on the nation's list of priorities and critiqued the plans of both leading presidential candidates.

In her first public talk since her husband, two-time Democratic presidential candidate and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, publicly admitted to an extramarital affair, Elizabeth Edwards confined her remarks to health coverage _ an issue that forced itself into her own top priorities after a 2004 cancer diagnosis.

She said the financial crisis that has shaken Wall Street may demand national attention and money that would otherwise be invested in fixing the health care system.

"I'm more discouraged than I was before," she said during a talk at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. "Shame on us if we don't take the momentum _ even with all the other things that are happening _ and translate it into a policy."

Edwards said she sparred with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama over his health care policy, which mandates insurance for children but doesn't require coverage for adults.

And she had almost nothing good to say about the health care plan of Republican hopeful John McCain, charging that it would simply lower costs by forcing bare-bones policies.

Audience members asked no questions about her private life. Edwards did not mention the affair.

Through her public bout with breast cancer, which disappeared after a long round of treatments but resurfaced in early 2007 in an incurable form, Edwards has become a respected speaker on health care policy.

But she's been quiet about her latest hardship, only discussing the infidelity in a brief statement last month in which she pleaded for privacy and said that her husband had disclosed the liaison in 2006.

That statement set off a round of criticism aimed at her, as Democrats said she was too willing to keep the affair a secret to help her husband's political ambitions, as well as her own.

John Edwards has canceled all of his public events until after the election, saying in a statement through his publicist he doesn't want to be a distraction to his party's ticket.

He admitted in early August that he had an affair with a woman hired to produce videos of him in 2006. She remained on the campaign trail during the opening days of his presidential bid at the end of that year.

McCain's plan is foolish, this is a great article showing why Obama's is better.

http://myrealitytelevision.com/2008/09/mccain-versus-obama-on-health-care/

but there is a concern in the article brought up by a contributor that asks how Obama will pay for all the pre-existing conditions? Anybody know his stand on that?

McCains stand on that is that he did not have a kitchen table for 5 and 1/2 years....Got it?
He is covered under the FEP program, Medicare, and the VA...
(Besides which he is so powerful that he probably got Cindy's eye lifts done for free...)

That link is fabulous, but a bit too much to get the point across in the 30 second sound bite..

One of the first steps would be to forbid the private companies from denying coverage (or jacking the premiums) for people with preexisting conditions. That way, at a minimum, people who can afford insurance but can't get it under the current system, could be covered. This would greatly reduce the numbers of uninsured individuals, and lessen the burden on a nationalized system to be developed to cover everyone else.

I'm guessing some of the $10 billion a month being spent on Iraq could help?

Excuse me, but Elizabeth Edwards abetted in the deceit of the Voters.
Her effectiveness for ANY public issue is severely compromised.

Maybe, but it a dying cancer patient wants to talk about health care I'm listening. BTW, it wasn't her responsibility to talk about her cheating husband, that was a private matter for her. That was his responsibility to be honest with us.

Why?

The presidency is too important to base our vote on personal foibles.

Oh, I know that it is catnip for the Republicans (though they somehow give their own guys a pass). But what if... we didn't have this idea that we as voters are owed some kind of perfect family life from our politicians? How many of them can meet this standard?

People will argue that it shows "judgement" or whatever. But I want my brain surgeon to have good PROFESSIONAL judgement. I don't send out a questionnaire about their sex lives.

Let's just de-mythologize the whole thing and try to vote in the smartest, most competent person with the best agenda. That's already difficult enough, without putting a magnifying glass to people's marriages.

And yes, I feel this about ALL candidates, not just the ones on my side. I just don't want to go there.

A real woman who puts up with her husband banging another woman! Yes that must be a real woman.

Let me get this straight: we shouldn't have a basic level of healthcare as a right of citizenship... because John Edwards went out and got laid?

You sound very much like a true man that really understands "Banging" but in your case I would imagine it is "Banging" Budweisers into your skull.

we don't know the dynamics of their relationship and have no right to judge it. some women DO put up with it, some women would prefer their husband sleep with someone other than themselves. some married couples have arrangements that they don't make public knowledge. some people get married out of convenience and parade it around as love and commitment. some people get married because they got pregnant.

the edwards's are dealing with it in their private lives, it shouldn't be public fodder anymore than a CURRENT VP candidate who preaches abstinence-only education and has a pregnant, unwed, teen. (which shows that her lack of a sex ed policy doesn't even work in her own home-- i don't recall edwards proposing making adultery illegal or something equally nonsensical) i don't care about their personal lives or those of their children. i care about their policy proposals and how they measure up to real facts we are faced with right now, like teen pregnancy rates and their link to abstinence education.

Good for her. I'm a breast cancer survivor and I root for this remarkable woman every day. Her position on health care is no longer theoretical if it ever was. Her very survival is at stake in the discussion and that gives her enormous gravitas.

I really HATE Faux Noise ...

Did any of you guys hear that Hillary was going to be at a rally protesting the Iranian President at the UN Meeting next week ... ?

Ok so I heard the McSame's veep "Failin'" was also going to be at the protest and upon hearing that tidbit, Hillary canceled her appearance ...

Well my point is this, Faux Noise were hyping the fact that the two "powerful" women were going to be at the event together but when they reported the Hillary cancellation, they used a very unflattering image of her in the news article ...

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/09/17/clinton-blindsided-palin/

If you look in the link it actually says "clinton-blindsided-palin" ...

I am guessing they are pissed our girl dissed the Lying Neocon, hence the choice of pics ...

Faux Noise Sucks ...
