John McCain defended his campaign from charges that it has a problem with the truth and batted back suggestions that he is economically out-of-touch during appearances on all seven morning shows Tuesday.

It was an uphill task, perhaps best illuminated by the Senator's appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe. McCain was forced to redefine what he meant when he declared the "fundamentals of our economy are strong" just yesterday. He offered curt responses to charges that one of his ads falsely accuses Barack Obama of supporting sex education for kindergartners. (Later in the show, in fact, McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds sent an email to host Mika Brzezinski defending the ad, which she subsequently read on air.)

Most glaringly, McCain openly sparred with Brzezinski, whom he accused of being an open supporter of Obama. Asked by the host to assess whether an ad attacking him on the economy was out of bounds, McCain replied:

"I'll leave that for the American people to decide. I still say to you, and I know you are a supporter of Senator Obama, if you would urge him to come and do town all meetings with me as I have asked him to do time after time the whole tenor of the campaign would change."

The charge created an awkward and tense environment for the rest of the segment, with Brzezinski forced to note (as she has done in the past) that one of her brothers works for the McCain campaign (another brother works for Obama, and her father was once an adviser).

"Senator," she said, "as a characterized Barack Obama supporter, I take objection. I'Il just say, take care of my brother working at the campaign."

"Thanks," replied McCain, "that was a cheap shot."

But the issue clearly hung over the rest of the morning. Later in the show, Brzezinski addressed it once again.

"In light of the John McCain interview, I feel I need to say not only does my brother work for the McCain campaign, but he worked for George Bush for six years," she said. "I'm proud of him."

Meanwhile, Republican strategist and former McCain aide Mike Murphy was left to explain away the Senator's humor, albeit adding that he thought the campaign's antagonism to the media had crossed a line.

"i don't think he meant it as an attack," he said. "There's definitely become a mentality inside the McCain campaign which is very hostile for anybody in the media they think is at all favorable to the other side. I think that's mistake. I think they overreact. I think doesn't do McCain well to have that mentality in the campaign. I don't really understand it because it's not his natural way."

Yet another example of McCain not taking responsibility for how he is represented. Read the Bill? Perhaps should and then he'll understand what is proposed to do -- a responsible approach to teaching children (little kids) how to respond to perverts leading up to teenager learing to take responsbililty for the choices they make. They need to know the fact to do this. However, he will continue to deny this is the case. In addition, who wasn't watching the "switch?" Was he part of the group that should be doing just that?

I love it when McCain gets cornered and his face begins to twitch.

Mc Cain seems a little unstable in this interview. His voice is a little shaky. His nerves a little rattled. If the campaign does this to him, what would being president of this mess do to him? Scary!!!

The FOX interviews of Palin and her regard for McCain are remarkable. It seems that all of us from middle America recognize a great American patriot and a smart progressive woman when we see them. Each of us decides, based on our attitudes and knowledge which we get from our life experiences, who would be the best President and who would best serve the American people.

The FOX "interviews" of Palin were certainly remarkable, for being so laughable. I trust that many in Middle America are smarter than you think, and see through the smoke and mirrors of McCain and Palin. McCain is an ill-tempered, unprincipled man with a campaign governed by lobbyists and uber neo-con corporate yes men. Palin is merely a poor parody of an excellent SNL sketch; a cynical and ridiculous VP selection. I see nothing "progressive" in either. Indeed, both represent status quo politics at best and regression at worst. Heaven help us all if U.S. citizens are stupid enough to elect McCain-Palin. Enough!

Yes, it's amazing just how remarkable an interview can be when there aren't any REAL substantive questions being asked.

Speak for yourself. I am a "middle American," and I see the McCain interviews as self-glorification of a man who paints himself as a reformer and a maverick, even though he followed the dictates of the man who slimed his military career, his wife and even his CHILD. He embraces this man in public out of political expediency, and any semblance of family loyalty is out the window.

As fo the "reforms"....most of his reforms have been formulated as a way to escape responsibility after he was caught engaging in the very behaviors that he now wants to prevent everybody else from engaging in. How about that Keating 5 membership (that got McCain described as showing "poor judgment?" He never worried about lobbyists and campaign financing until AFTER he got caught pocketing 112,000 bucks from Keating and getting caught with his pants down.

And how about that loophole in campaign finance that allows HIM to use his wife's corporate plane for campaign trips, whereas every other pol using a corporate plan must pay for his flight.

Pipe some reality into your "attitudes and knowledge that you get from life experiences before you settle on McCain and Palin.

EXPERIENCE THIS!

"It's not his natural way"?????? We have been told that McCain has a nasty temper and that he's quite vindictive. And why the heck does he keep insisting that he's running negative ads because Obama won't participate in town hall debates? He sounds like he's losing it. Better now than after the election.
This man is batty and if America votes its' biases instead of it's economic and social condition we are screwed.

Those unmoderated town hall "debates" (and/or the ones with McCain-chosen fake moderators) are just another way for McCain to continue to tell the same lies about his opponent that he is already telling. Besides that , McCain is counting on his people doing what they already do.....packing the audiences with McCain supporters. He is absolutely trusting that Obama will be a better man than he is and behave much more decently (the same way Obama has behaved up until now). Why should Obama do any favors for a man who lies about everything Obama stands for?

Watch McCain try to use this as an excuse to weasel out of a moderated debate.

Republicans always expect Democrats to behave far better than they are willing to behave themselves.

It was a great question, because the way that McCain has sold his s.oul to Karl Rove in this campaign is an indication of the kind of presidency we can expect. Completely lacking in integrity.
