The Obama camp, sensing blood, released a new ad this morning taking John McCain to task for calling the fundamentals of the economy "strong" in the midst of a financial sector crisis.

Titled, "Fundamentals," the spot runs through some of the more alarming headlines of recent days: "Lehman Brothers Collapses," "Markets In Turmoil," "Job Losses at 605,000 For The Year," and "Foreclosures at 9,800 A Day," before getting to McCain's line and repeating it three times. The ad ends with the knife: "How can John McCain fix our economy if he doesn't understand it's broken?"

Coming off the back-and-forth between McCain and Obama yesterday, it seems clear that the campaigns will again focus on economy today. Certainly, the spot reflects a more populist tone that Obama is seeking to strike.

The ad, the campaign says, will air in "key states," but these things have become the equivalent of daily video press releases.

You know there are clips of McCain saying "I don't know much about the economy, its something I need to get more familiar with" THIS should be the clip that is played in these ads as well. Maybe throw in the clip of Palin not knowing what the VP does and you've got a catchy little ad. :)

It's not just that he doesn't understand its broken. He helped break it. He voted for the act that repealed the safeguards in place since 1929 and his economic adviser in hiding Phil Gramm was one of the main sponsors of the act. When President McCain appoints his commission to study the cause of this financial meltdown, they will have to investigate John McCain and Phil Gramm.

Next McCain will attack Barack Obama. And the saga continues. The root issue should be that of the economy. The past is the past, both men will approach this differently. Stop the blame game!

sorry ..... but this ........ tactic you are advocating .... wouldn't persuade the 70% of the ignorant electorate .... they base their votes on attacks .. not solutions ... it's a sad reality ............

i wouldn't call it a 'blame game'. it's about acknowledging facts and taking responsibility

there can be no honor without honesty.

there can be no honor without responsibility.

mccain needs to own up to his own involvement, and obama needs to keep up with this approach, in conjunction with putting forward his viable course corrections to our country's economy

Usually the people who want to 'Stop the blame game!' are the ones to blame. In any relationship, if the one to blame fails to own the blame and make amends, nothing can go forward. The anger of the American people demands that those responsible be held accountable. It's not enough to keep saying 'let's move forward'...it won't work.

I'm a 40 year old woman with 2 kids (18 and 13) and we've just moved back home to a smaller city in Wisconsin. I've been trying to find a job for a month (I'm an RN) and in the midst of this so-called nursing shortage, I still can't find a job. And to top it off, we just bought a house. I get physically ill when I think about what could happen to us. My dear hubby has a pretty good job, so I'm grateful for that, but this job requires him to travel a good part of the time.

I see people all around me wondering what's next. It's really scaring folks and I think Obama understands this. He needs to win. At least then I'll know (and millions of other Americans) that there may just be a silver lining somewhere at the end of this nightmare.

Also, THE AD WAS GENIUS. It makes McCain look seriously out of touch. Like someone else said. This is without a doubt the best spin-job ever. These so-called undecided voters ought to be "decided" now. GO OBAMA!

Yay, lets vote for McCain, the guy who admitted during the primaries that he doesn't understand economics.

This is the kind of ad the Obama Campaign needs to be running. It's also the first one with more ominous music, which has a major impact on how the ad is interpreted. This is the first ad that may actually have significant impact.

Anybody care to write about this?

Dirty old McCain's health plan would tax premiums, raise costs, cause more uninsured, lower the quality of the insurance....

I think Mac should stick with that message. Increasing the fear levels does absolutely nothing to help people, and he's right. The fundamentals are strong. What's needed now is some discussion about just how it can be restructured to avoid this type of meltdown in the future.

What "fundamentals" are you talking about?

Greenspan, hardly a pal of the left, has said this economic mess is the worst in his lifetime and probably a once in a 100 years type event.

Just because you and McCain don't have a clue what you are talking about does not mean things are fine.
