NEW YORK — Second in the broadcast network competition to talk to Sarah Palin: Katie Couric.

The CBS anchor will spend two days on the road with the Republican vice presidential candidate as well as presidential hopeful John McCain, the network said Tuesday.

Couric's interview material will be aired Sept. 29 and 30 on the "CBS Evening News" and "The Early Show."

It's timed for just before the Oct. 2 vice presidential debate between Palin and Democrat Joe Biden.

ABC's Charles Gibson had the first in-depth network interview with Palin last week. She's also talking to Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity this week.

There's no word on whether Couric's interview material will appear on "60 Minutes," which competed hard to get the first Palin interview.

Awarding Couric the interview also appears to be a clear message from the McCain campaign to NBC News. Republicans have been unhappy with NBC, primarily because of the active support for Barack Obama voiced by MSNBC's Keith Olbermann.

So while Gibson and Couric have interviews with Palin, NBC's Brian Williams _ who anchors the top-rated evening news program _ has been snubbed so far.

Good for you Katie. Its your job to ask the candidates significant questions. Politicians have no right to hide behind their thin skin. Some of us appreciate the media stepping into their role, as they are meant to, in order to protect democracy from power hungry leaders who feel no social responsibility. Keep asking the tough questions.

McPalin chose Couric because they think she's a marshmallow. She'd better prove them wrong or her credibility is gone.

If Katie does a lame interview, she might as well go back to the TODAY show.
She better be as hard on Palin as Charlie Gibson was on Obama during the Debate with Hillary Clinton.
But who cares about these side issues--pigs in lipstick WHATEVER--I want to see her get asked questions about issues that matter. And don't let her get away with these taking points that don't make sense!

GO KATIE WE ARE ALL DEPENDING ON YOU

Couric hard on Palin? don't bet on it. I remember her badgering Obama about the surge, trying to force Obama into a corner. Of course she underestimated how skilled and gifted he was at answering , until he outlined to her that the surge was only a part of a broader Iraq policy, a policy that for the most part was unsuccessful, such as WMD, Malaki's failure to secure a workable coalition etc..
The success of the surge could be described as celebrating after a field goal in the fourth quarter even though you are down by four touchdowns.

Could you explain, please, why her being a hockey mom makes you want to vote for John McCain for president?
No seriously, I really want to know.

I love how HP ignores the Hannity 'InterVue', which I am sure was just a republican infomercial.

The video editors for Ms. Couric better sharpen their razor blades (or mouse click fingers) - there's gonna be a bunch of footage in the recycle bin on this one.

Here is your chance Couric. Gibson showed he still had journalistic chops. Do you or will you ever have the kind of guts that separates a Murrow from a Hannity? And not to raise the bar too high, the fate of the nation depends on you. Frankly, I'd be more comfortable with Lara Logan.

YOU would probably be most comfortable with Keith Oberman doing a hack job on her.I am glad NBC and MSNBC get no interviews. That would be like having the HP interview her.I am sure Katie, who is dead last in the ratings, will be tough on her.

I hope ms. couric gets to the bottom of this rooskie question. I mean, is palin some sort of rooskie? She seems like she might be one of those rooskies that infiltrate our country via alaska. she said something about seeing her homeland from her post in alaska. why aren't we getting good info from the media on her birth records -- sure, the rooskies can fake those but i'd like to hear from someone who witnessed her birth or has wiretapped her house.

Katie is goinf to suprise us. She can do in-depth journalism. Did she have to agree not to ask certain questions, or submit questions in advance, or does the McCain have editing rights to the interview?.

I believe that Katie Couric will do an excellent interview with Palin. She is a woman and she can handle this job better than anyone. I am very excited that Katie Couric is on this one and I cannot wait to get the final results!
Katie is intelligent, credible and has integrity. I am believing in her abilities to do this interview and "do it well"!
We need some credible integrity comming up to bat! One of the things I really enjoy about Katie Couric along with her pointed, candid & informative interviews is "her smile". Somehow it helps me and sometimes the news she must report is not all that pleasent, yet it's truth as she finds it. So when that smile comes on after a real tough to report story, I just kind of sigh, feeling just a sense... that everything really is going to be allright.
If I just see a picture of her smiling, like here on Huffington Post... I smile to.
"Katie Couric is real".
And she is "Really Gonna Do This Interview"

Tough questions? Hahahahahahahahahahha.
When Larry King is finally mummified, Couric will be his replacement.
This is all called managing the "news" as an infomercial.

Come on guys..you're being too hard on Katie. Give her a break! We all know she will rehearse Sarah Palin. She will make sure she answers the questions smoothly or maybe she will have a
?broken?! teleprompter. Katie is pro-Woman..., Pro-McCain therefore she is Pro-Palin. She's just rehearsing for the Debates. That is all this is about. I'm more concerned why the Republicans led by John McCain and crew get to into Alaska and try to shut down the judicial system. What are they afraid of, that if they aren't following the same manipulative tactics of Bush-Cheney, Americans just maybe able to think for themselves! Hmmm I used to like McCain. I can't believe I ever thought he was actually bi-partisan, Pretty desperate and his racism is truly coming to the forefront. Wow! Katie Please that's the best you got! Softball comes to mind.

I suppose we can count on such probing questions as Couric stunned the presidential candidates with -
like "When's' the last time you got really angry?"
or "Tell us something we don't know about you?"
Probing!
Profound!
Pinhead.

Katie Couric's job is on the line so I think she will do a serious interview.
If she does a fluff piece that will tell me that Katie will be going back to daytime tv.
