During Economic Crisis, McCain Camp Talks Streisand And Lohan

Despite a massive financial crisis rocking Wall Street and several days of lashing from media fact-checkers, the McCain campaign is still hammering away at "issues" that could charitably be described as frivolous.

On Monday evening, McCain's press crew blasted out an email to reporters titled "John McCain On Barack Obama And The Financial Markets." Sounds substantive enough. But when reporters opened it, they found the bolded, highlighted line was McCain's criticism of Barack Obama for holding a fundraiser in Hollywood with Barbara Streisand:

"[Obama] talked about siding with the people, siding with the people, just before he flew off to Hollywood for a fundraiser with Barbara Streisand and his celebrity friends. Let me tell you, my friends, there's no place I'd rather be than here, with the working men and women of Ohio." - John McCain.

Never mind that McCain held a top-dollar fundraiser of his own, in Hollywood, with celebrities, less than a month earlier.

Fast forward to today, and McCain aides are now decrying Obama for not being inclusive enough in his treatment of celebrities, actually calling out the Democratic nominee for reportedly turning down a fundraising event with Lindsay Lohan. Per TMZ.com:

"So let me get this straight," said Tucker Bounds, a spokesman for the McCain campaign. "They turned away Lindsay Lohan, but Barack Obama has friends like unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers and convicted felon Tony Rezko? Maybe LiLo is just too upstanding for Barack Obama."

Certainly, the Obama campaign has engaged in its share of trivialities. But the Democratic nominee's press shop has done, at least this week, yeoman-like work in striking a serious tone on the economy. Just look at the somber two-minute long commercial Obama released this morning. As Tommy Veitor, Obama's spokesperson, responded (undoubted, gleefully): "Glad to see they're focused on the important issues over in McCain HQ."

McCain's only hope for winning is on a traditional GOP-hatefest culture wars. It won them the 1988, 2000 and 2004 elections as they attacked blacks, immigrants, Muslims and gays.

Democrats have won on economics. In 1992, it was "the Economy Stupid" and in 1996, people were happy with Clinton.

If Americans care about tabloid issues, McCain can win. If they worry about WSJ issues, McCain is toast.

Since the economic crisis has taken hold in past few days, McCain has lost 7 points in the CBS/NYT poll. He is down in all the tracking points by 1 to 5 points.

Sarah Palin might have been a nice pick for a "hockey mom" election, but when all moms are worried about food prices and keeping their jobs, Palin just appears like a foolish distraction that we cannot afford.

Because they're both code for "GAY." Republicans are nostalgic for the social issue that won them the 2004 election. It's their default attack whenever things get out of hand for them. Like this bottoming out of the entire US economy. They're still deluded that anti-gay rhetoric will be the panacea for all of their problems. This McCain campaign is reaching new levels in defining "Out of touch." They're totally out of touch with how out of touch they are. Besides being out of touch in the first place. Gramm, whose successful fiddling de-regulated banking anti-trust protection laws. Gutting the existing strong state rules that sought to stem the rise of predatory tactics used by lenders and brokers to place homeowners in high-cost mortgages.

Add anothr YUP, but irratated at CNN and MSBC and the others who FOLLOWED THE GOP TALKING POINT SCRIPT and actually BOTHERED to try to make the O-fundraiser in Hollywood on Tuesday eve some sort of an urgent-sort of ISSUE, questioning whether he was "wise" to attend , where folks in 'H-O-L-L-I-W-O-O-D" pulled up in their Bentleys and doled out thousands for dinner (even complained about the menu being cheapskated and NOT very lavish for what they shelled out) and thousands for the concert portion..LOL, it was rather ridiculous thru out the day , especially as there was indeed far more pertinent isues to discuss and cover but gave them excuse to NOT air much to nil of O's 2min commercial which they barely acknowedged and when so only seemingly begrudgenly...noting it did play across the country (never did get it here so will search online) and noted it must have been an expensive ad buy. That vast LIBERAL MSM , still in the bags for McCain or perhaps just trying to fill their wastelanded airtime !!
