New McCainiac Rothschild Weighs In On "Rednecks"

After coming out as a Democrat for John McCain earlier in the day, Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild made her first slip as a surrogate during a CNN appearance on Wednesday. In deflecting a question about whether or not she was bitter over Clinton's loss in the primary, the new McCain surrogate pivoted to a discussion of Barack Obama's notorious "bitter" remarks, but added a twist of her own -- describing the small-town voters Obama was talking about as "rednecks."

"Barack Obama went and called the people who have guns and cling to their religion bitter. The people out who are the rednecks or whatever are bitter," Rothschild told CNN's Campbell Brown. "If bitter is the easiest way for you to rationalize that, I truly with all my heart believe that John McCain will be a great president, then call me bitter. But it doesn't really advance the dialogue, Campbell, sorry."

What also may not advance the dialogue for McCain's campaign is the too-casual (and potentially insulting) use of slang to describe small-town voters. Though Obama was tagged for seeming to slight the beliefs of the citizens he was talking about, he was never accused of condescending to the level of using the phrase "rednecks" to describe them.

It could also be that Rothschild was clumsily trying to paraphrase Obama's old remarks. But that explanation is also problematic, since Obama never used the word in the first place.

Requests for a response from an Obama rep went unreturned. But if the multi-millionaire Rothschild becomes a frequent surrogate for McCain -- and should she continue to argue that Obama is unforgivably elitist in his own tone -- slips of this nature will likely not go unremarked upon for long.

I have friends in rural Pennsylvania land and they all have weapons but not one of them misunderstood Barack and "thought" he was referring to them as "rednecks." And they admitted to me they are bitter, but, bitter about losing their crops, about not being able to afford machinery and Bush basically not SEEING them as humans or the people who put food on our plates. Lady Rothschild has homes in London and New York (and by the way, isn't she "bitter" about Barack not picking Hillary?). McCain has nine homes in three different time zones. And these are the people who middle America will cast their votes on? Like I am saying to everyone, GO AHEAD. Throw a match on oily selves because this country is going to be hot with strife, division, crime, poverty, homelessness, joblessness, poor education, abused children, people like those in rural Pennsylvania who Barack SEES and wants to help. Barack called them on it, the truth, they are bitter with guns--but unfortunately, they are also cut off from society where they don't understand a black man trying to talk to them, telling them he worked on Chicago's Southside and knows their pain--but--guess they'll learn the hard way when they see McCain in his nine homes, Lady Rothschild married a mega-millionaire, Cindy is an heiress and Palin has pocketed a ton of money while Governor. Actually, if you actually believe John McCain would make a great president, the term that comes to mind for me is "delusional", not bitter.

Truly, though, her quote has to be heard for the full gestalt. Reading it alone doesn't do it justice. When Obama was describing "people clinging to their guns and religion" he was right. Lynn doesn't have a clue. In some towns, people DO cling to the religion and guns because that's how they wre raised. Look at Palin, all she's talked about is hunting, guns and her religion.
