Two reports today from the LA Times and the New York Times suggest that the momentum in the 2008 campaign has shifted to Obama. McCain has struggled to recover from his comment that fundamentally the economy is strong. The gaffe came at the worst possible time as the crisis on Wall St. deepened with the government bailout of insurance giant AIG and further declines in the stock market. The LA Times reports:

Under fire for his assertion that the American economy is fundamentally sound, John McCain moved Tuesday to assure voters of his empathy and accused Barack Obama of attempting to take political advantage of the roiling Wall Street crisis...

...The Arizona senator spent seven national TV interviews and two campaign events seeking to make it clear that he understood the depth of concern about the rocky economy...

...The economy and the fate of financial institutions took control of the campaign for the second consecutive day Tuesday, with both tickets trying to assert dominance. Dual ads aired in key states. Obama's asked: "How can John McCain fix our economy if he doesn't understand it's broken?" McCain's said: "Your savings, your jobs. I'll keep them safe."

But McCain was operating from a defensive posture, after his expression of confidence in the economy at a rally Monday in Jacksonville, Fla., on the same day the stock market slid more than 500 points.

The McCain campaign has sought to co-opt the theme of change from Obama and hoped that the vice presidential choice of Sarah Palin would further the effort to distance McCain from President Bush. A new poll by the New York Times indicates that this effort is faltering, as McCain is widely viewed by voters as a "typical Republican," and that the "Palin effect" has produced, so far, only a limited burst of interest.

Despite an intense effort to distance himself from the way his party has done business in Washington, Senator John McCain is seen by voters as far less likely to bring change to Washington than Senator Barack Obama. Mr. McCain is widely viewed as a "typical Republican" who would continue or expand President Bush's policies, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

Polls taken after the Republican convention suggested that Mr. McCain had enjoyed a surge of support -- particularly among white women after his selection of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate -- but the latest poll indicates "the Palin effect" was, at least so far, a limited burst of interest.

The contest appears to be roughly where it was before the two conventions and before the vice presidential selections: Mr. Obama has the support of 48 percent of registered voters, compared with 43 percent for Mr. McCain, a difference within the poll's margin of sampling error, and statistically unchanged from the tally in the last New York Times/CBS News Poll in mid-August.

It seems like McCain and Palin are using each other as a crutch. Palin is bringing the crowd while McCain is there to make up for what Palin should know but doesn't. Meanwhile, neither are speaking on the issues nor are they outlining some sort of agenda or guide as to how they are going to "try" to clean up this mess that the McCain/Bush administration are leaving behind. I have no faith or confidence in that ticket..............

The people of the United States really need to wake up so that they can see the big picture. Actually, I am very afraid in this world of today.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED THE PEOPLE.

My choice, faith, and confidence is in Obama. A man of integrity.............. McCain is a failure to the people and he had 26 years to prove differently.

I have to disagree with you. The American people failed America. These politicians were VOTED IN by the people and unless Americans realize that it is the American people who are at fault, then the Americans will continue to destroy themselves.

The inconvenient truth. All we can do is try, try, try. ring the bells, sign up the new voters ask and answer questions without being argumentative (raised voices make for anger, not understanding).

Fortunately, the people may be listening.

Note: the economy has definitely won out over national security, the bombing in yeman is attracting no attention at all.

John McCain is directly complicit in the terrorist attacks on Wall Street this week .........................

PalinStompsObama, you and the other Republicans have voted for Bush who had zero experience, zero ideas and zero credibility. That means you are in no position to talk.

Obama has ideas i.e. championing education and ethics reforms in his time as a state and national senator. He is a law professional who champions the integrity of the American Constituition. He is also an astute which brought the foreign policy focus back to Alfghanistan where Al Queda and the Taliban are winning.

Please go ahead and vote for John McCain and Phil Gram who championed deregulation of financial institutions and have cost all Americans pain and hardship today.

I just sent VB a long email, through Hume, I am hoping it will cheer him up a little. I took the liberty of saying we'd all been asking after him and filled him in on the tr*ll situation, which, as we all know, is dire. Here's hoping he is back with us soon.

Excellent! And so true.
02:41 AM on 09/18/2008
That would be so funny were it not a fairly accurate prediction of what will likely happen to our economy should Ocarter get elected.

And that my friends is a prediction you can take to the bank...should your's still be in business tomorrow.

But hey, maybe Obama's financial advisors will lend you some of thier millions when you have trouble...you know, the one that headed Lehman Brothers...or maybe the one that headed Fannie Mae.

ROTFLMAO I just woke my daughter up laughing so loud.
02:22 AM on 09/18/2008
The hillarity of it all is that you leftists are so invested in getting back in the White House that you just don't care that your candidate has zero to bring to the tabe. Zero experience, Zero ideas, Zero credibility.

You would be much better served to be happy about his impending defeat and hope for a candidate that offers more than talk next time around.

Good luck though...we'll all need it should Ocarter get elected.

Since you're such a big Palin fan, perhaps you can answer this question. Just how many times has Sarah Palin's sister been married? Only 3 or more?

"Wooten and Palin's sister, Molly McCann, began divorce proceedings in 2005 after four years of marriage."

02:30 AM on 09/18/2008
LOL! This is my favourite reply.
02:35 AM on 09/18/2008
Why in God's name would I possibly care about how many times her sister has been married. I hope you guys...and your witless candidate continue to run against Sarah for the next few weeks...it's hillarious to watch.

Unfortunately, since Ocarter has nothing to offer he has no choice.

I have a challenge for you:

Name 3 things Obama has EVER accomplished that qualifies him to be a Senator....let alone Prsidnet. (And winning the Dem nomination doesn't count as one)

01:02 AM on 09/18/2008
I'm back! And better able to deal with this interview. Now, instead of being hideous, it has become rather funny! hehe

On ANWR from Palin:

"We only want to drill in a 2000 acre part of a 2,000,000 reserve. That is only the size of LAX"

Yeah, just let us get our foot in the door. We will behave, we promise.

Also:

"John McCain knows more so than any leader in our nation today that for national security reasons we must be an energy independent nation."

Really? More than anyone else in a nation of 300,000,000?

Seems to me his daughter said that theirs is the only family that knows what war is like too.
01:45 AM on 09/18/2008
she probably heard for the first time in her oh so darlin' life, ABOUT national security, when she met john mccain a coupla weeks ago.

and it probably began with bomb bomb bomb.....

i know she seems to want to try and impress on me the fact that if i were truly breathing air and if she can pile her hair high upon her highschool fantasy filled head, AND if obama had not refused the ten townhall meetings, that she might after a LOT of training, make me feel confidant that she could keep me safe.

Oh, I just can’t stand it no longer, all this so called educated political babble of so called “intelligent†hypotheses are clearly not based on fact and historical data.

Allow me to quote:

• “Individual accounts were administratively feasible and would likely cost $20-30 per year per account to administer. However, to hold down costs, individual investment choices would have to be limited until accounts accumulated some level of minimum balance, perhaps $5,000.
• Market risks were not a sufficient reason to oppose individual accounts. Administration analysts found that long-term investment was, in reality, relatively safe. The administration also noted that the current Social Security system contains political risks that may well be worse than market risks.
• Concerns over redistribution could be addressed through the adjustment of benefit formulas, matching contributions or other means.â€

This is just one item, privatization of the Social Security fund, not to mention the same administration was the same that “eased†the regulations on banking loaning practices and credit card restrictions.

Does this vaguely sound familiar to especially Democrats? I should, it was the last Democrat that assumed control on the Oval Office, in between running around with his pants around his knees, Clinton is responsible for such “concepts†and implementations of such policies, this back yard isn’t so tidy either once one gets a closer look upon it.

I am neither Republican nor Democrat, and proud to admit it..

A Bob Barr devotee, or a RuPauline?
01:28 AM on 09/18/2008
Neither, I am one of those that can still think independently without any "blind" guidance. I will keep you guessing, it may take some of you considerable time to figure the complexness of such an item as to whom I may align myself with-keep guessing. Can't do any worse than our current picks for President right now, if that any consolation.
