I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Barack Obama's campaign is releasing a new television ad in which the Senator, speaking directly to the camera, lays out his economic agenda and positions himself as an above-partisanship leader on this tattered front.

The spot, which lasts two-minutes (suggesting an expensive ad buy), takes no direct digs at John McCain. Rather, the Senator casts blame for much of the current economic crises on government as a whole and takes a subtle jab at the media as well.

"The truth is that while you've been living up to your responsibilities, Washington has not," he says. "That's why we need change. Real change. This is no ordinary time and it shouldn't be an ordinary election. But much of this campaign has been consumed by petty attacks and distractions that have nothing to do with you or how we get America back on track."

From there, Obama offers a bullet point rundown of his economic prescriptions: reforming the tax system, clamping down on lobbyists, fast tracking "a plan for energy 'made-in-America,'" and ending the war in Iraq. "Doing these things won't be easy," he concludes. "But we're Americans. We've met tough challenges before... I approved this message because bitter, partisan fights and outworn ideas of the left and the right won't solve the problems we face today. But a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility will."

The advertisement, the campaign says, will air nationally and in battleground states.

Full Script Below

In the past few weeks, Wall Street's been rocked as banks closed and markets tumbled. But for many of you -- the people I've met in town halls, backyards and diners across America -- our troubled economy isn't news. 600,000 Americans have lost their jobs since January. Paychecks are flat and home values are falling. It's hard to pay for gas and groceries and if you put it on a credit card they've probably raised your rates. You're paying more than ever for health insurance that covers less and less. This isn't just a string of bad luck. The truth is that while you've been living up to your responsibilities, Washington has not. That's why we need change. Real change. This is no ordinary time and it shouldn't be an ordinary election. But much of this campaign has been consumed by petty attacks and distractions that have nothing to do with you or how we get America back on track. Here's what I believe we need to do. Reform our tax system to give a $1,000 tax break to the middle class instead of showering more on oil companies and corporations that outsource our jobs. End the "anything goes" culture on Wall Street with real regulation that protects your investments and pensions. Fast track a plan for energy 'made-in-America' that will free us from our dependence on mid-east oil in 10 years and put millions of Americans to work. Crack down on lobbyists - once and for all -- so their back-room deal-making no longer drowns out the voices of the middle class and undermines our common interests as Americans. And yes, bring a responsible end to this war in Iraq so we stop spending billions each month rebuilding their country when we should be rebuilding ours. Doing these things won't be easy. But we're Americans. We've met tough challenges before. And we can again. I'm Barack Obama. I hope you'll read my economic plan. I approved this message because bitter, partisan fights and outworn ideas of the left and the right won't solve the problems we face today. But a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility will.

Terrific Commercial.. Contrary to popular opinion from the morning news ( MOJO) to be specific. I have to say, it was like he was in my living room speaking directly to me. It was like breaking news. I respected the fact that Obama understands that we're in an economic crisis and that we need some answers. Just like a hurricane, just like any other tragic news, what is going on in Wall street is devastating. So..Where is this type compassion from our current president? Keith Olberman said it right.. Bush is treating this economic crisis like another Katrina.

I don't get it. At this point the contrast is so clear.

One candidate bases his campaigns of fear, smear, and distraction and treats us like preschoolers.

The other as seen here focuses on issues, is smart and treats us like adults.

How ANYONE either (R) or (D) that REALLY is patriotic and actually does love our country would vote for JM is beyond me. Don't they want our nation in the hands of the smart, competant guy for a CHANGE? We already tried the dumb-guy-I-want to have-a-beer-with choice and we see how that turned out.

Shouldn't we all ignore all the talk of lipstick, and other silly stuff and just do the right thing?

Please?

I don't get it either. How can Obama and McCain be close in the polls? How can anyone even CONSIDER voting for McCain? It all seems so obvious, so what's going on? (Is it really racism?)

In a word.... YES!

McCain got NOTHING. No policies, No ideas just gimmicks (including Palin is a gimmick) Yet there are hardcore supports of this sick and disstorted campaign.

If McCain/Palin wins this will set us back into the stone age and all the other countries will leap into the forefront.

One more thing.... This begs the question...

Are right wingnuts really trying to distroy America? And I reallymean this... Do THEY hate America so much that they would rather see it fail than succeed?

That makes three of us. It sure beats the hell out of me. You know what's even weirder? Why would women and minorities vote for Ailing & Palin? They are not really women or minority friendly are they?

The stock market closed today at 10609, that's 50 points lower than when Bush took office seven and a half years ago. Aren't the repubs. the capitalist party that Wall Street is in love with, yet whenever hey're in power, (Reagan, and now Bush) the market usually has an adverse effect. Aren't all you guys happy now that Bush couldn't push through his privatizing of Social Security? You know, investing it in the Stock Market. If the Dems. didn't fight him on it, right now we'd be looking at all of our retirement (SS, 401k) gone.

Good ad. It's refreshing to see a politician actually talk to the American populace as adults rather than as children incapable of rational thought like McCain and the Repulsive, excuse me, Republican Party does.

However, I would like to see the Obama campaign aggressively address the endless litany of lies, distortions, and half-truths the Palin McCain campaign is spewing (Yes, Palin McCain. Girlfriend is now driving the Crooked Talk Express). It appears the majority of the American people still do not know what an absolute train wreck the incompetent, "scandal-and-gaffe-a-minute" Palin McCain ticket would be. I would suggest they buy 15-30 minutes of national TV in prime time, and enlist a supporter or operative -- preferably a Republican woman like Susan Eisenhower to educate the public.

Wake up, America.

OMG this was amazing I could just cry..... Morning Joke tried to downplay this ad saying to was too long and would turn people off.

Within minutes of slamming O's ad Morning Jerk Joe went on a two minute rant about the Iraq war and how great it is for McCain. While on the rant he even called Mika silly or was it stupid because she didn't agree with him.

My point is I listened to Morning Jokes 2 min free air ad for McCain and I have just watch O's 2 min ad that blew me away.

Morning Joke I want my 2 min back from you. What a loser! I think he got jealous of O's 2 min ad and decided to give McCain 2 min of free time with the rant.

I've been viewing old campaign ads from past Presidential Elections on YouTube lately. This ad that Obama put together reminds me of similar ads that Ronald Reagan did. Of course, Reagan was the "great communicator". So, Obama is taking a chapter right out of Reagan's book. Reagan had a unique gift of looking in the camera, coming across as genuine, articulating his genuine beliefs on the issues, and really connecting with the American people. Obama has, in many ways, duplicated Reagan in this ad, and the ad will resonate with Reagan Democrats and old school moderate Republicans. The ad will make them feel nostalgic for the "good old days" when elections were about ideas and issues.

As an Obama donor, I feel I really got my monies worth with this ad.

I give Barack Obama credit for refusing to yield to the politics of emotional manipulation which the Republicans have turned into an art form by doing a political ad which is thoughtful, rational, honest (a rarity these days) and which insists that the American people be ready and willing to become involved in the welfare of the nation by supporting him and his economic plans.

Would I love to see more specific ideas from him concerning the rebuilding of our economy? I think we all would, and I hope we'll hear a detailed explanation regarding his economic policy during the upcoming Presidential debates. Bill Clinton won rather handily against George H.W. Bush with "it's the economy, stupid!", and it's time for the Obama campaign to revive this line, and use it against McCain and the same old failed economic policies with a vengeance.

With all due respect to Bill Clinton, I wonder if he would have won in 1992, had it not been for the fact that Ross Perot siphoned off a large portion of votes that would have gone to Bush 41.

Kurt_Dylan,

Clinton probably would not have won that election if it had not been for Ross Perot who received 19% of the vote which is the largest third party candidate ever. Clinton received 47% of the vote he did not win the white male vote but he still won.

I think that was a wonderful ad! It was conversational and I believe it will pique the interest of some older voters who may not have given him a fair listen before. Good form, O!

How could anybody not be inspired by Obama?

I am exhausted, truly worn out, by his attackers, the McCain/Palin backers, who say he doesn't understand the working American, that he is going to raise taxes, that he lacks experience. I am sickened by the constant use of his Arabic name, Hussein, by those who oppose him and the badly veiled attempt to vilify him as a terrorist.

Barack Obama is a leader to his very core -- he is smart,. Really smart. He is genuine. He is perceptive and sensitive and....I am begging every Republican who is reading HuffPo posts to please, please, please reconsider. Look into your conscience. Look at your pocketbook. Look at what corporate America, with the backing of the Republican party, has done to our country. We are bleeding -- literally and figuratively -- and we need this change and we need this hope.

Vote Barack Obama/Joe Biden 2008.

Excellent!

And who took the first step to speak in a commercial to the American people in a presidential way?

Barack Obama!

Contact your friends, share the REAL message, donate, make calls, knock on doors. Even if you are in a blue state, get the turnout even higher (don't just want a victory in the electoral...we want and need both), and you can help by contacting folks in battleground states.

THIS ad is the Obama that won the primaries and was ahead before McCain revived his dying campaign with what's-her-name.

Barack picks his spots wisely. He knows when to step in just in time to make Mccain-Palin look like the old man and the airhead trying to keep up with him. He's always one step ahead. That's leadership. That's maturity and the sign of a winner.
