Barack Obama's campaign is releasing a new television ad in which the Senator, speaking directly to the camera, lays out his economic agenda and positions himself as an above-partisanship leader on this tattered front.

The spot, which lasts two-minutes (suggesting an expensive ad buy), takes no direct digs at John McCain. Rather, the Senator casts blame for much of the current economic crises on government as a whole and takes a subtle jab at the media as well.

"The truth is that while you've been living up to your responsibilities, Washington has not," he says. "That's why we need change. Real change. This is no ordinary time and it shouldn't be an ordinary election. But much of this campaign has been consumed by petty attacks and distractions that have nothing to do with you or how we get America back on track."

From there, Obama offers a bullet point rundown of his economic prescriptions: reforming the tax system, clamping down on lobbyists, fast tracking "a plan for energy 'made-in-America,'" and ending the war in Iraq. "Doing these things won't be easy," he concludes. "But we're Americans. We've met tough challenges before... I approved this message because bitter, partisan fights and outworn ideas of the left and the right won't solve the problems we face today. But a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility will."

The advertisement, the campaign says, will air nationally and in battleground states.

Full Script Below

In the past few weeks, Wall Street's been rocked as banks closed and markets tumbled. But for many of you -- the people I've met in town halls, backyards and diners across America -- our troubled economy isn't news. 600,000 Americans have lost their jobs since January. Paychecks are flat and home values are falling. It's hard to pay for gas and groceries and if you put it on a credit card they've probably raised your rates. You're paying more than ever for health insurance that covers less and less. This isn't just a string of bad luck. The truth is that while you've been living up to your responsibilities, Washington has not. That's why we need change. Real change. This is no ordinary time and it shouldn't be an ordinary election. But much of this campaign has been consumed by petty attacks and distractions that have nothing to do with you or how we get America back on track. Here's what I believe we need to do. Reform our tax system to give a $1,000 tax break to the middle class instead of showering more on oil companies and corporations that outsource our jobs. End the "anything goes" culture on Wall Street with real regulation that protects your investments and pensions. Fast track a plan for energy 'made-in-America' that will free us from our dependence on mid-east oil in 10 years and put millions of Americans to work. Crack down on lobbyists - once and for all -- so their back-room deal-making no longer drowns out the voices of the middle class and undermines our common interests as Americans. And yes, bring a responsible end to this war in Iraq so we stop spending billions each month rebuilding their country when we should be rebuilding ours. Doing these things won't be easy. But we're Americans. We've met tough challenges before. And we can again. I'm Barack Obama. I hope you'll read my economic plan. I approved this message because bitter, partisan fights and outworn ideas of the left and the right won't solve the problems we face today. But a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility will.

Obama's integrity and genuineness comes through... but that unfortunately is often perceived as weakness. America likes to see its Commander-In Chief" beef up a bit! So, speeches aside, we a SUSTAINED + FAST & FURIOUS battle. Challenging McCain's record and claims is very much relevant and not a diversion. Besides, the other side has ZERO qualms about hitting below the belt and has many more 527s that are doing their job.

MCCAIN/PALIN, THE MAVERICKS = MAVERISK

NO MORE JOHNNY COME LATELY TO "CHANGE"! NO MORE DO-OVERS!

MCCAIN-PALIN SAY ANYTHING NOW TO GET ELECTED WITH A 10% PLAN FOR CHANGE -- "THANKS, BUT NO THANKS!"

MCCAIN-PALIN'S POLICIES CHANGE "NOTHING, NADA, NOTHING, NADA!"

JUST SAY NO” TO MCSAME “MISLEADING OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC” ON CHANGE FOR COUNTRY FIRST!

WHICH “COUNTRY FIRST”? THE ONE PALIN WANTS TO SECEDE INTO? THE ONE MCCAIN-PALIN CAMPAIGN LOBBYISTS WANT TO DRILL THROUGH AND TAX TO FINANCE THEIR CORPORATE BUDDIES OR THE ONE WHERE THEY WILL SHIP OUT MORE AMERICAN JOBS AT TAX PAYER EXPENSE?

I guess it's all in how you define weak. I dont see Barack as being weak. I see someone who has to rely on his past as a POW as being weak. I see offering up a token female for VP as being weak. I see Palin's outrageous lies as being too weak too speak the truth and be judged by her own deeds instead of her words.

Speaking the truth in the time of mass decpetion is very a very poweful act. Being the first African American to be a presidential nominee is a sign of a very powerful person. That, in and of itself is not only a huge undertaking, but extremly brave as well.

Weakness is a word the republicans use if you're not trying to be a cowboy and running a country by gut feelings instead of a methodical, analytical thinker.

Hey, Shadow08,
Please don't misunderstand... I'm all for civility and real honor as is Obama! I repect him for not being the one to throw the first punch, but as he says, he's always the one to throw the last one!
After seeing how the Dems have repeatedly lost to these double-talking, lying, ruthless, obnoxious, greedy, and power-hungry termites who have been materially and morally eating this country hollow, let's not kid ourselves... it will take an extermination to take back the house and repair it!

I was so disappointed this morning when I was watching Morning Joe. Joe and Mika ridiculed this commercial saying that Obama needs to be stronger and get out there and meet the moms and pops of America. They claimed that this ad was weak, what do they expect an angry black man getting tough and ignorant on McCain. Wrong! Obama is better than that and doesn't need spin to get through to the people. Did I have a few words for Joe and Mika, There I was in my kitchen while my 20 month old son was starring at me talking into the television. How clueless can they be. Unless they have been hiding under a rock for the past 19 months. I do recall many times that Obama has lifted up his sleeves and got close to the people and showed compassion. See this is what Iove about Obama. The country is in an economic crisis so he comes into our living rooms and decides to have a one on one conversation. Obama had me drawn to what he had to say it was like breaking news. He showed compassion and understanding of what the middle class is feeling without having to stoop to attack mode. Contrary to popular opinion, this commercial was terrific. It beats McCains ads of stock photos, video stills and lies.

I watched bout 10 minutes of Joe. In that 10 minutes he interrupted everything Mika tried to say, and then asked her if she knew how silly she was looking...I turned them off. Mika has no business saying anyone else is weak, when she allows Joe to denigrate her every morning. She is no role model for 21st century women.

Agree wholeheartedly. Mika is a weakling, but I think that is why they have her sitting next to a blowhard like Joe. He clearly has no respect for her, and it has become too painful for me to watch her being bullied every morning. ( I wonder sometimes how her husband feels about this? When someone disrespects my husband, I'm right in there with him.) Having said all that, I really enjoyed the show during that period Joe was away because of the birth of his last child. Ths show has great guests, and the potential to be truly "fair and balanced" (could do without Buchanan and Harold Ford can be a weakling also) but all in all the show works except for Joe.

I've already written the show a couple of times telling them I'd prefer my Morning WITHOUT Joe. Let's hope they will do a Tucker and Abrams on him.

Grace, I've posted this before, so I going to just copy and repeat it. I've stopped watching MOJO because it just became unwatchable. It was like watching a bully and his dizzy girlfriend surrounded by their buddies pick fights with anyone they wanted and get away with it. It became unwatchable with the moosehead pick. The bullies girlfriend had one of her type in the game and she was so happy it was just impossible to watch her smugness. MOJO is an insult to it's viewers. It provides little in the way of objective information and just looks to be school yard jocks making fun of kids who study. Mika plays the stereotype of the dizzy blond everyday and JOS is a republican bully. Mika is not a journalist. She has always been just like Palin, a want to be newscaster that found herself in a prime spot and thought she got there because she was smart. I had to stop watching the show because it raised my BP so much it became a detriment to my health. Grace, don't encourage it. Don't help their ratings. Try listening to NPR in the morning as you take care of your son. P.S. I think your son is lucky to have such a caring mom.

Excellent ad. I've read and listened carefully to Obama's plan and I like it! I think it will work. McCain on the other hand has no plan-----Except to order another study! Obama gets it. I am especially impressed with the interconnectedness of the three prong portion, i.e. FDR like creation of jobs creating clean energy and rebuilding our desperately aging bridges, roads, energy grid, etc./ This addresses both jobs and energy independence while also moving us away from global warming and pollution. I like the smoothness of linking jobs/energy/environment into a plan that works. If Americans have decent jobs, we'll make it and so will the economy---from the bottom up as it always must be. It does no good to have captains of industry who know how to make companies who manufacture refrigerators--in China--if ordinary Americans don't have a job that pays enough to buy a refrigerator. Or car or computer or fill in the blank.
Republican greed and deregulation brought us to this sorry mess and John McCain voted with them 90% of the time. His hands are not clean in this no matter what he says. His policy views caused it. Now it's time to get a guy who knows how to put us back to work. And that's Obama. McCain thinks we're doing fine. Obama knows Americans are a people who like to work if they're given a chance.

No excuses. I worked with a young woman who had cerebral palsy. She controlled her specially made keyboard with her tongue, and was more computer literate than I was. McCain can afford to have one adapted to his limitations. Stop trying to make him a victim. Anybody who isn't computer literate these days is too intellectually lazy to make the effort. Period.

So if it was just his hands and arms, why does McCain, when it comes to computers, internet, and email, describe himself as "computer ILLITERATE", and even "a Neanderthal"? The man has repeatedly said he doesn't KNOW HOW to use a computer.

If he really could, wouldn't he say "I can use a computer but don't very often because of my injuries"?

If McCain himself is going to say he lacks the *KNOWLEDGE*, in this one case I'm going to believe the guy.

His superstar celebrity act isn't working as well as his handlers thought it would. His campaign is in trouble. Every poll lead he had is gone.

Besides, why doesn't Obama tell us what he has done to address the issues he speaks of while he has been in office? Because, there is nothing to tell. That's why.

The truth is, Barry has no problem whatsoever spending billions each month rebuilding foreign countries — he just objects to doing it in Iraq, where it might assist the U.S. military mission.

Have you heard about Obama's proposed Global Poverty Act? This is a breathtaking, bank-breaking scheme that Obama and his now-running-mate, Sen. Biden, tried to ram through Congress — the better to address the problem that Obama has exactly no meaningful legislation to his name:

Biden has already attempted — so far unsuccessfully — to address his running mate’s shortage of legislative accomplishment by rushing Obama’s proposed “Global Poverty Act” through his committee. This monstrosity of a law would require the U.S. to commit 0.7 percent of its gross national product through 2015 to foreign aid. The 0.7 percent figure is rooted in an oft-repeated and usually ignored aspiration spelled out in a 1970 U.N. General Assembly resolution; the 2015 target was set by international bureaucrats at the U.N.’s “Millennium Summit” in 2000. The effect would be to skyrocket U.S. largesse from its current annual level of about $21 billion (the world’s most generous) to a whopping $85 billion. As described by U.N. adviser Jeffrey Sachs, the Millennium Project anticipates that the total transfer — $845 billion by 2015 — would have to be raised by “a global tax, preferably on carbon-emitting fossil fuels.”

That's $845 BILLION, folks.

I don't know where you copied and pasted this stuff from, but did you notice that $845 billion is almost exactly the amount we've spent in Iraq so far?

$10 billion per month X 12 Months = $120 billion per year X 7 years = $840 billion.

a 2-minute political ad is unprecedented and will get attention because of its length. It is expensive and the length suggests that Obama is serious about the economy. Obama's calmness recently---and I know a lot of supporters want him to hit the passion button--but his calmness is meant to contrast him with the McCain camps frenzied and shrill--and un-presidential-- ads of late.

A man that wants my vote trashing ideas from the left. Have we TRIED any ideas from the "left" Senator? Not since the 40's... so how are they "outworn?"

Methinks regulations, a "left" idea, would have prevented some of these banks from collapse. Lord knows a planned economy, very leftist, would completely end boom and bust cycles based on overproduction and underconsumption.

It is a shame that we have a system that MUST continue to grow, and we MUST continue to consume unsustainably for the economy to be in good shape. That is the "outworn" idea, and it is time for a paradigm shift. I don't mean a shift towards non-partisanship, I mean a shift toward a recognition that this economy will kill all of us, and the planet, if we do not find something to replace "profit" as our number-one goal and desire.

This kind of ad is very effective. Older Americans appreciate the calm, informative speaking style that tells it like it is. Yes, make more ads that are easy to understand and simply said in ways that will reassure people from the upper middle class on down that their taxes will not be increased. This is a perfect counter strategy to the Rove-attack ads ------stay on track, Senator Obama----Hopefully American citizens will catch up soon.

Agreed. Calm, reasoned. And a plan to deal with the problem. It's a whole lot better than what McCain has to offer---another "commission". The problem isn't that nobody knows what caused this. The problem is that McCain needs a bunch of time for his advisers to teach him enough so that he can talk about it and then teach him enough to lay out the plans they feed him. But when he gets his plan, it will be a product of Phil Gramm who was the creator of the mess that needs a plan for clean up. McCain has no credibility on the economy. And heaven help us if we got left in Sarah's hands. She knows nothing about national and international economies, but she is never in doubt and always overly decisive. Pray for the nation. We really cannot sustain another four years of the last eight. For goodness sakes, look what eight years has done to us.
