LOS ANGELES — Ryan O'Neal and his son were arrested Wednesday morning after authorities said they found drugs at the actor's Malibu home during a routine check associated with Redmond O'Neal's probation.

Investigators suspect both men had methamphetamine, but the substances still need to be tested, Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Los Angeles Sheriff's deputies and probation officers went to O'Neal's home for a routine check of Redmond O'Neal, who is serving three years of probation after pleading guilty in June to drug possession charges.

Whitmore said in addition to drugs that deputies suspect belong to Redmond O'Neal, deputies also found narcotics in Ryan O'Neal's living area. Both men were released after posting $10,000 bail and could be charged with felony possession of narcotics.

Ryan O'Neal, 67, was nominated for a best actor Oscar for "Love Story." Redmond, 23, is his son from a relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett.

O'Neal had two children with his first wife, Joanna Moore: actor Griffin O'Neal and actress Tatum O'Neal, his co-star in the 1973 movie "Paper Moon," for which she won an Oscar for best supporting actress.

Tatum O'Neal, the youngest actress to win an Oscar and who now has a recurring role on FX's series "Rescue Me," pleaded guilty in July to disorderly conduct in connection with an arrest on suspicion of cocaine possession in New York.

Ryan O'Neal was arrested last February on suspicion of assaulting his son, Griffin, but charges were never filed.

A call to Ryan O'Neal's agent, David Shapira, was not immediately returned Wednesday morning.

A sick part of me laughs when white trash meth heads make the news in LA, and Wasilla, AL has 42 meth labs...

That's a shame. I heard a reporter in L.A. today say a friend of Ryan's had no idea the drugs were there, WHICH is possible. Maybe not, but sometimes you have a kid that will blindside you completely when they are using drugs, alcohol or whatever.

A cousin of mine defended her son to the max, when she was told the kid was high. He had gotten out of prison after two years promising to go the straight and narrow. Now my cousin is as straight as they come when it comes to drugs. She isn't a hard case about it, but she's in her late 40's and wants to have a life without the complications of youth that refuses to see the damage they could do to her life.

BUT one day, my brother who was visiting told her to just look in his top drawer. She found two syringes already filled and ready to use, and a half a dozen baggies with Meth in them.

Had she been raided she could have been arrested as well. Before she could throw him out of the house he was arrested as someone else's house and sent back to prison.

So is it possible Ryan didn't know?

Well I don't know the arrest report and what was found where, but if the reporter's source was correct, then I will give Ryan the benefit of the doubt, if not,...well the laws, bad as they are, are what rules right now.

If the Police did a house to house search of homes in the "Hollywood" area for drugs they would need a line of dump trucks to take away the evidence!

Younger people here may not realize what superstar O'Neil was in the past: He had absolutely everything going for him...fame, wealth, extraordinary good looks, and talent.

This story is so sad, so pathetic. This man brought into this world very talented children whose lives have also been destroyed by drugs.

I think at this point, he may have reached rock-bottom, and the only place to go is up. I hope so.

Talent??? I guess his acting ability to look like a 'little boy lost' while being an angry SOB was his greatest talent.

I demand medicinal methamphetamine for children right now!

Avoid meth like a dose of bubonic plague. It's toxic and your brain will never be the same. My brother-in-law was a CEO with an MBA when he dabbled. Now he's a broke, confused, walking corpse. I understand you get addicted the first time you do it, even if it doesn't register right away.

I think the big news here is that Ryan O'Neal still has an agent?

Who knew?

He seems like a really great dad.

Most dads would never share their meth with the kids.

He could avoid all these problems if he would just stick with a safe drug like alcohol. (note to dumb people: that was a joke.)

People can screw their lives up in all kinds of ways. Gambling, sex, eating too much sugar, take your pick. It's ridiculous that we focus our righteous indignation on an arbitrary list of banned substances.

Hundreds of thousands die each year from tobacco and alcohol related illnesses, yet no one is talking about making it illegal to use those drugs. Strange.

Give me a flipping break. We're not talking about a little ganja or shrooms here. We're talking about crystal meth. Are you seriously suggesting that a hit of meth is equal to a beer or a pack of cigaretes?

I don't know, I haven't tried it and I don't plan to.

What I am seriously suggesting is that adults should be allowed to use any substance they see fit. If they commit another crime, like driving under the influence or killing someone, then they should go to prison. But possesion and use of drugs should not be a crime, and yes, that includes meth and heroin.

The more I read and hear about meth the more I realize just how scary and damaging that drug is. The epidemic is nearing the proportions of crack in inner city America in the late 80s.

Get better Mr. O’Neal and take care of your family. Look into the water and see that you are more than you have become. We are all Americans, we are all people on this globe, and no amount of fame or money shields us from the foibles of being human. In fact, fame and money can exacerbate latent feebleness. See Rick James story for proof.

Meth is poison but if it were not that it would be something else.
This is a brain problem more than a chemical one..even so, if it were weed they were on all these people would be a whole lot better off..
It's too bad, by the time kids are grown to teenageers it is already too late for parents to influence them much. The train has left the station.
This bad apple is a grown man.

This family has had dozens of bottoms. Poor Tatum O'Neal is in her forties and she's still suffering the effects of being taken to Hollywood drug parties by her father when she was a child. Authorities should have removed all of Ryan O'Neal's children from his care decades ago. I can't stand John McEnroe, but he did the right thing getting his kids away from the O'Neal clan.
