LOS ANGELES — Ryan O'Neal and his son were arrested Wednesday morning after authorities said they found drugs at the actor's Malibu home during a routine check associated with Redmond O'Neal's probation.

Investigators suspect both men had methamphetamine, but the substances still need to be tested, Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Los Angeles Sheriff's deputies and probation officers went to O'Neal's home for a routine check of Redmond O'Neal, who is serving three years of probation after pleading guilty in June to drug possession charges.

Whitmore said in addition to drugs that deputies suspect belong to Redmond O'Neal, deputies also found narcotics in Ryan O'Neal's living area. Both men were released after posting $10,000 bail and could be charged with felony possession of narcotics.

Ryan O'Neal, 67, was nominated for a best actor Oscar for "Love Story." Redmond, 23, is his son from a relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett.

O'Neal had two children with his first wife, Joanna Moore: actor Griffin O'Neal and actress Tatum O'Neal, his co-star in the 1973 movie "Paper Moon," for which she won an Oscar for best supporting actress.

Tatum O'Neal, the youngest actress to win an Oscar and who now has a recurring role on FX's series "Rescue Me," pleaded guilty in July to disorderly conduct in connection with an arrest on suspicion of cocaine possession in New York.

Ryan O'Neal was arrested last February on suspicion of assaulting his son, Griffin, but charges were never filed.

A call to Ryan O'Neal's agent, David Shapira, was not immediately returned Wednesday morning.

He was perfect as Barry Lyndon. Perfectly vapid. I remember thinking at the time that Kubrick had chosen poorly. So, I read William Makepeace Thackeray's novel and lo and behold, I came to see the beauty of his selection. ONeal embodied his character - he was Master Barry of Barryville.

And the photography is luscious - every scene, every angle. Just freakin' beautiful. Netflix it.

I hope they get better soon. RO will never get a part as good again.

Cheers,
Jack

I feel for him. It's a horrible situation to be in. Recovery, is forever. I hope they get the help that they need.

The story left out the most important part - Tatum O'neal. Addictive behaviors are passed around the family through genetics and conditioning. Now both Ryan and Tatum can make a fast buck when they sober up and write a tell all-book about the experience and just how bad it got. http://mespace.wordpress.com

Hold on- It's not anybody's business what someone has in their own home.

I don't care that much for O'Neal, but I care much less for the police state coming in people's home and causing grief that's unnecessary.

Drugs need to be legal. 60% of the people locked up in the prison industrial complex don't belong there. It costs us taxpayers millions and is another fraud scheme for the rich to control society. People need to learn on their own that drugs make you less of yourself, and society will get over the big novelty when its notoriety has faded.

Have you ever talked to someone who is addicted to meth or in recovery? Have you seen what it's done to Amy Winehouse?

It destroys people's mind, body and spirit and is very difficult to shake. Legalizing it would be a travesty.

No, legalizing it would lead to natural deselection.

Whatever the probation officer decides! A probation officer can demand to see or search a person on probation any time. If the officer thinks you're up to no good or you have a reputation for being up to no good, he can demand to search you or your premises at that moment, no questions asked. If you refuse, he can violate your probation and you go back to jail.

Circumventing all O'Neal family issues, and Ryan O'Neal's fatherhood, etc. ... how does law enforcement come into a private residence to do a "probation check" on an individual and end up apparently sweeping the entire home? How can Ryan O'Neal's arrest possibly be legal?

Haven't you ever heard of 911 ?

It happens every day in this Police State that the U.S. has become.

With "probation" they just force you to agree to give-up your Constitutional Rights in writing so their otherwise illegal "checking" is easier to hide behind and requires NO justification.

Otherwise, they'll get a "no knock" warrant based on the lie of a drug-addict informer who needs quick case for a score, or "accidentally" serve a harmless warrant on the wrong house, or get impatient and just kick the door in and to Hell with everyone . . . no penalties for law enforcement, but if you defend your home against their illegal invasion, be prepared to go to prison potentially for life!

So why was he on "probation" ?

Did he kick sand in someone's face, or could it be that he violated a law that he knew all about.

Part of the punishment for breaking the law is "probation" .

I say that the only help anyone using drugs should get, is a triple double over dose of what ever it was they loved more than life.

How come no body noted that Redmond is O'Neal's son with Farrah Fawcett?

Ryan O'Neal should be locked up forever. This is the second family he's ruined.
