Another Palin Lie: Claimed She Took Pay Cut As Mayor, Actually Got Raise

One thing Sarah Palin cites as proof of her reform credentials is a pay cut she says she took when she became Mayor of Wasilla in 1996.

"As mayor I took a voluntary pay cut, which didn't thrill my husband; and then as governor I cut the personal chef position from the budget, and that didn't thrill my hungry kids," Palin said recently, repeating a frequent refrain.

But did she really get an overall pay cut as mayor? The record suggests a more complex story.

$68K as mayor of a small town?!!!!! Where does all this money come from? Ask the mayor of a small town in the lower 48 how much they make. For most of them, it's a second job and they make no more than the minimum wage, if any thing. It's more of an honorarium than a salary. My 20-something cousin, a high-school drop-out, is mayor of a small town in Texas and I don't think the job actually pays any money.
I don't know about you, but I am increasingly concerned about the ease with which the Palin-McCain ticket tells lies. Sarah Palin is clearly an habitual or compulsive liar and is accustomed to having her lies taken as the gospel truth. How does a person repeat the same exact lie dozens of times in front of a camera and then act as if it's no big deal? McCain, at least, appears to show some embarassment at having been caught in a lie (although, to be fair, I do believe that in the beginning, he doesn't really know that he's telling a lie. He just doesn't take any time to research what he's told.).

Palin: Obama doesn't 'get it' on energy issues

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin – Sarah Palin disparaged Barack Obama Thursday night for not having to deal with oil and natural gas issues in his home state of Illinois.

“And maybe if he’d been the governor of an energy-rich state, he’d get it,” she said at a rally in Green Bay, held just down the street from fabled Lambeau Field. “And maybe, maybe if he’d been on the front lines of securing our nation’s energy independence, then he’d understand­.”

McCain’s advisers have stressed Palin’s experience with oil and gas issues in her home state. The Alaska governor touted her resume on Thursday.

“As governor of Alaska, I’ve overseen a very large portion of our U.S. domestic production of oil, and through a heck of a lot of competition and hard work, I’ve secured agreements to build a nearly $40 billion natural gas pipeline to get our clean, green natural gas down to hungry markets like here in Wisconsin,” she said. “I know what works, and I know that America needs this.”

In making her case, Palin did not note, as she had previously, that Alaska produces 20 percent of the country’s energy supply. Fact-checks in recent days have shown that Alaska provides about 14 percent of oil from American wells, and government statistics show that Alaska’s total energy production is 3.5 percent of the country’s total output.
