Another Palin Lie: Claimed She Took Pay Cut As Mayor, Actually Got Raise

One thing Sarah Palin cites as proof of her reform credentials is a pay cut she says she took when she became Mayor of Wasilla in 1996.

"As mayor I took a voluntary pay cut, which didn't thrill my husband; and then as governor I cut the personal chef position from the budget, and that didn't thrill my hungry kids," Palin said recently, repeating a frequent refrain.

But did she really get an overall pay cut as mayor? The record suggests a more complex story.

according to this .......An article in the same paper a week earlier shows Palin herself discussing the fact that she'd accepted the increase, albeit against her will: The mayor's wage was increased from $64,000 to $68,000 in 1996, just before Sarah Palin was elected. "I voted against it when I was a council member and I felt like a hypocrite when I came in and had to accept it,"
Palin said. "Two and a half months after I was elected, the new resolution kicked in, but I took a pay cut down to $61,200. Then I had to accept the $68,000 since the last fiscal year started."
So what appears to have happened is this: As a Council member she voted against hiking the mayor's salary from $64,000 to $68,000, but it passed anyway. When she came in as mayor, she passed the ordinance which brought her salary down to $61,200. But that may not actually have taken effect, and Council-mandated raises brought her actual salary up to $68,000.

Ok lets see of we can get this all straight: She walked in the Mayors office at $64,000, took the "voluntary paycut" to $61,200, but as the fiscal year had started already, she got the raise to $68,000.

I guess Palin hadn't learn how to say "THANKS, BUT NO THANKS" yet. Too bad for te folks in Wasilla, thats quite of bit of meth rehab the little city could have used!

I no longer take anything that Palin/McCain says at face value. They are L-I-A-R-S. Here she is saying that she's going to "reform" the government and bring openness and transparency. If she's serious about that - why not start now!

Reform? Ms. Palin, how will you reform our govt if you throw muck at the opposing side which is not true (Obama's tax cuts; pig on lipstick comment; sex ed commercial).

Openess? Ms. Palin, why do you have a yahoo email account for govt work (who does that!?); why are you not participating in the troopergate investigation; why are you not telling your staff to comply with subpoenas.

Transparency? Ms. Palin, why do you continue to lie about the earmarks, the chef, and the bridge to nowhere?

Reporters - keep doing your job. I think it would be interesting to take her initial speech (because all the other ones are copies of the first anyway) - and make of list of everything she claimed. Follow-up on all of her claims - and then either footnote or cross out the claims that have shown to be lies, half-truths, and exaggerations. I doubt if anything but propositions will be left untouched.
