LONDON - Children's author Eoin Colfer is to write a sixth novel in the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series, seven years after the death of its creator Douglas Adams, publishers Penguin said on Wednesday.

The Irish writer, best known for his Artemis Fowl fairy stories, has the blessing of Adams' widow, Jane Belson, to continue the bestselling science fiction saga.

Called "And Another Thing...," the new novel will be published in October 2009. Colfer said he was a big fan of the original books, which started as a BBC radio serial.

He can't be any worse than the obscenely overrated Adams was.

This has been tried so many times, and with competent writers paid good money to either finish another writer's novel or to carry on a series or other.

It never works.

I love Douglas Adams, and I've read his books over and over (my fav is Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul). Although I have read Coiffer's Artemis series ( a fun, light read for kids, really), I am extremely skeptical of him or any other author picking up Hitchhiker's Guide.

I doubt I will be along for the ride. I agree with others here: No Douglas=no new book.

Great! I guess I'll go plug my guitar into Pro Tools and start recording the new Ramones album...

Douglas Adams was a one of a kind writer. I seriously doubt that anyone could replace him....

Agreed.

I just hope he'll meet the high standard of the original book.

Blasphemers!

You know, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

Ughh, these books were written by a Man who is not with us anymore. I've read everyone of those books more than once. There will never be another Hitch hikers triology... Doug Adam's isn't with us anymore. When Tolkeins son finished the Silmarillion it was unreadable....
It is unbelievable what publishers will do for the almighty dollar or euro.

Totally agree.

Right! I never actually ever finished the Silmarillion. With no Adams, there is no Hitchhiker's series.

The British TV series is vastly superior.

Where are the large, friendly letters?

Seriously, I'm sceptical - truly. Kinda like Bindy Irwin doing daddy's job and all that...
