On Tuesday, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent a video to reporters laying out the political landscape with less than 50 days until the election. In it, he made a startling pronouncement: the Obama campaign was going to spend a total of $39 million in Florida, a state that, while classified as a battleground, is considered a long shot for the Democrat.

"Bush won Florida by 380,000 votes in 2004. If you look at the number of registered African-Americans who did not turn out in '04 it is over a half million; 900,000 registered young voters didn't turn out. There are over 1.4 million voters who we consider base voters who didn't register. Obviously there are a couple million more registered targets," explained Plouffe. "We have enough base voters in Florida to win the election if we can just turn them out. "

The "under the hood" peek at Obama's Sunshine State operation was met with general surprise. Such a budget, after all, would come at the expense of other battleground states that seemed much more promising.

In actuality, the Obama campaign has long seen Florida as fertile turf. Indeed a high-ranking adviser to the Senator told the Huffington Post several weeks ago, explicitly, that they envisioned more opportunity there than in Ohio and would be focusing their efforts likewise.

Another aide to the campaign said that Plouffe understood the Senator's chances in Florida. In addition to the million-plus registered voters who had not turned out in 2004, the campaign was targeting up to another million of African-Americans, youth and Latinos who were unregistered. In addition, Obama's aides have spearheaded a faith outreach drive to woo the large swath of religious voters who reside, primarily, in the northern part of the state. All these groups, the high-ranking official noted, were targeted heavily in Ohio back in 2004, making the margin for growth there far narrower.

And if Kerry's 400,000-vote loss to Bush in 2004 was a baseline, he added, then there were obvious avenues through which Obama could make up that ground.

"A few years ago the state party was in debt. They got creamed in '02, and '00 was demoralizing," the aide said. "Kerry campaigned here but he did it too late. In places like North Florida he got killed. That won't happen this time around. There are pockets in North Florida where 20 or 25 percent of African-Americans chose Bush over Kerry."

There are, of course, variables to this equation. For starters, because Democratic candidates agreed not to campaign in Florida during the primary, Obama was not able to woo voters (he did fundraise) in the state until this spring. He started really organizing a ground game only in July. As such, the campaign has just under 50 offices there as opposed to the nearly 70 it has functioning in Ohio.

The McCain campaign, meanwhile, has clearly invested in Florida as well, with the Senator recently making a stop in Jacksonville and previously appearing multiple times alongside the state's governor, Charlie Crist. The GOP, moreover, has been willing to push the envelope in the Sunshine State. On Tuesday, it was reported that the Republican National Committee, authorized by the McCain campaign, was sending out mailings confusing Democratic voters by telling them "We have you registered as a Republican."

Earlier in the week, it was discovered that the Republican Jewish Coalition had commissioned a poll in Florida and elsewhere that phrased questions designed to make Obama look like a stooge of the Palestinians.

On the flip side, there is Sarah Palin. The Alaska governor may be a boost to conservative hopes throughout the country, but in the Sunshine State her candidacy may be a liability. There is a sense of skepticism within the Jewish community over her religious affiliations, as well as allegations that she supported Pat Buchanan's run for the White House in 2000. Palin, the McCain campaign has noted, voted for Steve Forbes in that election. Nevertheless, Jewish community's concerns (stoked, it should be noted, by the Obama campaign) could prove the difference in what is shaping up to be yet another closely fought election.

On Tuesday, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent a video to reporters laying out the political landscape with less than 50 days until the election. In it, he made a startling pronouncement...

I spent some time calling voters today and probably 2/3 of the seniors I spoke to were either leaning Obama or fully supporting him. That's in northern FL, which is pretty conservative. It was surprising and heartening at the same time! If he can grab that section of the electorate, then FL is definitely within reach for him.

These GOP Republican criminals can only win if they suppress votes, cheat, misinform voters, and basically steal ballots. I have a good friend of mine who lives in Miami. She is Cuban. She said there were strong rumors in the Cuban exile community that in 2000 & 2004 some heavy Haitian and Black neighborhoods ballots were tampered with and were "Misplaced" by Cuban poll workers. These criminals cant stand to lose so they will cheat at all costs. My sister lives in orlando with her husband and 3 over 18 year old kids. My sister is a religious conservative evangelical. her husband is a buffoon Now my sister was all ready to vote Palin/Mcsame. . However, knowing that my sister receives alot of monthly social security disability payments I told her that Palin/Mcsame promised to cut Disability payments altogether. She was shocked and now will vote Obama/Biden who promise to keep Social Security intact. She promised to drive her husband and 3 boys to vote also.

Thank God more and more Jewish voters are wising up, and getting appropriately frightened at the prospect of a VP who speaks in tongues, and says things that are just as stupid in tongues as she does in Alaskan.

Those who speak in the tongues of men and angels but have not love area clanging symbols.

It's great to realized that Palin loves abusive of power and oil money.

We know her gods will pardon and save her.

And lets not forget that Al Gore actually won Florida before it was taken back by the Republican thugs and their patsies on the US Supreme Court.

There is a great film about what happened there: Recount.

Among other things it tells the story of how tens of thousand voters were disenfranchised by the Republican controlled election board. It will make you weep.

The National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago conducted a six-month study and vote recount for a consortium of eight news media companies, including CNN.

The results of the lengthy Florida recount will shock you.

As the article states, it depends on what standard Gore used to do the recounts. The Palm Beach standard, and the full state recount would have given Gore Florida by 41 votes -- that is the strategy that the Bush campaign pushed for originally.

Once again, the RNC realizes it can only win by cheating voters.

This whole "Florida or Ohio" thing is ridiculous. This isn't 2000 or 2004. It's 2008. Dems should just give up on those states this year. Way too many racists there.

The fight in this campaign should be all about Colorodo, Virginia, and Nevada. He just needs to win ONE of those states and he will be the next president (provided he wins all the states Kerry won, plus maintains his large leads in Iowa and New Mexico).

the point is, if Obama wins Ohio and/or Florida, then John McCain is SOL.

And Obama competing in FL forces McCain to waste money there, thus taking Mc's attention off of Ohio and other battleground states.

SeanOcali;

Sure Ocali, there aren't any racists in Virginia and Nevada, not a one and I have a bridge to no where that I want to sell you. What rock have you just crawl from under; racism is running rampant throughout this whole country? Why you people refuse to see or hear it. is called denial pure and simple.

All it took was someone named Barrack Obama to show up on the scene and your true sick colors came to the surface. It didn't take long for the people to show it either, you give idiotic excuses about Obama's inexperience and his young age. Give me a freaking break, what a load of hog wash; McSame laid up in a prison for a few years, how does that make him experienced enough to run a country. His experience is killing defenseless men, Bush is now experienced at killing men and women as well for oil, what a record. When all it would take is a little diplomacy, but; why be diplomatic when you can bully and take what you want.

If Obama wins Florida he will also win Ohio, Virginia, New Mexico and Colorado.

Florida is a tipping point from close election to landslide.

As of right now, Obama's best bet at the Presidency lies in holding on to Kerry 2004 and picking up Iowa, New Mexico and Colorado -- all three states have consistently trended towards Obama ( albeit by slim margins in NM adn CO).

Ohio is interesting due to the sheer number of field offices Obama has in the state. Kerry lost Ohio by just over 100,000 votes. By all accounts Obama has field offices in just about every Ohio County -- including the rural areas bordering WV and Kentucky. The WV/OH and Kentucky/OH border area is where Kerry lost Ohio. If Obama can limit his loss in this area and increase turnout in the traditionally democratic areas, he wins.

Also don't forget that The Secretary of State for Ohio ( Jennifer Lee Brunner) is a democrat. So is the governor. THAT matters in terms of built in organization that Obama can rely on ( not to mention gives democrats a powerful ally in fighting voter fraud).

Ohio seems to be trending democratic ever so slightly.

"If Obama wins Florida he will also win Ohio, Virginia, New Mexico and Colorado."

That's like saying, "If Obama wins the presidency, he also wins California." It's a pointless statement. He can win without Florida. Those other states would be much easier.

Line of the day:

"John McCain doesn't know where he stands on the economy. At 8am Monday morning, he said the fundamentals of the economy were strong. At 11am, he said the fundamentals were weak. We call that an epiphany."

This is a fundraising appeal. I think it's also a fake-out. I seriously doubt that the Obama campaign really plans to spend $39 million in Florida. Think about it; that's more than half of what the campaign raised in all of August. My bet is that Plouffe is trying to sucker McCain into spending more down there, at the expense of other swing states. I hope he succeeds.

That seems to be the strategy, force McCain to overplay his hand in Florida, thus losing attention on other battleground states and allowing Obama to gain in them.

Smart move on behalf of the Obama campaign.

Once again, the Obama strategy is to divert attention to Florida, thus forcing the McCain campaign to waste money there and hence lose attention on gaining ground in other battleground states.

I dunno. A lot of those Kerry votes in Youngstown are gonna be tough for Obama to get, just because of the race issue. I think maybe they're seeing that in their internals.

I think you missed my point. Obama is switching his attention to Florida, so that McCain keeps his eye on Florida, and blows a majority of his campaign funds competing there.

If McCain does, and it looks like he will, McCain won't have enough funds to campaign in the other battleground states like Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, New Mexico, Georgia, Nevada, South Dakota, Montana, and Obama is free to walk into all those states and gain significant ground in those states.

It won't matter if Obama doesn't win Florida, if Obama wins all the other states I mentioned, then this strategy has worked.

The Jewish community in Florida should be concerned, because Palin's hubby has connections with the fascist Alaskan Secessionist Party.

I say...Obama CAN play to Seniors in Florida. He needs to get his message across right now...like a SON or GRANDSON WHO CARES about them. Many Seniors are on fixed incomes...so the Wall Street news this week..can hit them hard. Obama needs to drive home that McCain and HIS politics have put them in this precarious situation... that McCain is *not* a Senior that cares about them.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. I am encouraged by the shift in voter demographics that has characterized this election. That being said, it seems nearly impossible to accurately quantify the effect that the shift will have on a state level even though so many of these new voters support Obama. I hope Obama wins it big, if only so I can go to bed at a decent time on election night this go around.
