On Tuesday, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent a video to reporters laying out the political landscape with less than 50 days until the election. In it, he made a startling pronouncement: the Obama campaign was going to spend a total of $39 million in Florida, a state that, while classified as a battleground, is considered a long shot for the Democrat.

"Bush won Florida by 380,000 votes in 2004. If you look at the number of registered African-Americans who did not turn out in '04 it is over a half million; 900,000 registered young voters didn't turn out. There are over 1.4 million voters who we consider base voters who didn't register. Obviously there are a couple million more registered targets," explained Plouffe. "We have enough base voters in Florida to win the election if we can just turn them out. "

The "under the hood" peek at Obama's Sunshine State operation was met with general surprise. Such a budget, after all, would come at the expense of other battleground states that seemed much more promising.

In actuality, the Obama campaign has long seen Florida as fertile turf. Indeed a high-ranking adviser to the Senator told the Huffington Post several weeks ago, explicitly, that they envisioned more opportunity there than in Ohio and would be focusing their efforts likewise.

Another aide to the campaign said that Plouffe understood the Senator's chances in Florida. In addition to the million-plus registered voters who had not turned out in 2004, the campaign was targeting up to another million of African-Americans, youth and Latinos who were unregistered. In addition, Obama's aides have spearheaded a faith outreach drive to woo the large swath of religious voters who reside, primarily, in the northern part of the state. All these groups, the high-ranking official noted, were targeted heavily in Ohio back in 2004, making the margin for growth there far narrower.

And if Kerry's 400,000-vote loss to Bush in 2004 was a baseline, he added, then there were obvious avenues through which Obama could make up that ground.

"A few years ago the state party was in debt. They got creamed in '02, and '00 was demoralizing," the aide said. "Kerry campaigned here but he did it too late. In places like North Florida he got killed. That won't happen this time around. There are pockets in North Florida where 20 or 25 percent of African-Americans chose Bush over Kerry."

There are, of course, variables to this equation. For starters, because Democratic candidates agreed not to campaign in Florida during the primary, Obama was not able to woo voters (he did fundraise) in the state until this spring. He started really organizing a ground game only in July. As such, the campaign has just under 50 offices there as opposed to the nearly 70 it has functioning in Ohio.

The McCain campaign, meanwhile, has clearly invested in Florida as well, with the Senator recently making a stop in Jacksonville and previously appearing multiple times alongside the state's governor, Charlie Crist. The GOP, moreover, has been willing to push the envelope in the Sunshine State. On Tuesday, it was reported that the Republican National Committee, authorized by the McCain campaign, was sending out mailings confusing Democratic voters by telling them "We have you registered as a Republican."

Earlier in the week, it was discovered that the Republican Jewish Coalition had commissioned a poll in Florida and elsewhere that phrased questions designed to make Obama look like a stooge of the Palestinians.

On the flip side, there is Sarah Palin. The Alaska governor may be a boost to conservative hopes throughout the country, but in the Sunshine State her candidacy may be a liability. There is a sense of skepticism within the Jewish community over her religious affiliations, as well as allegations that she supported Pat Buchanan's run for the White House in 2000. Palin, the McCain campaign has noted, voted for Steve Forbes in that election. Nevertheless, Jewish community's concerns (stoked, it should be noted, by the Obama campaign) could prove the difference in what is shaping up to be yet another closely fought election.

The front of the flyer read "Democrats tried to strip funding for our troops"

It almost went in the trash until I saw the small print....vote by mail application inside

Sooooo that is how they are hoping to win Florida again....Steal it like last time.

I hope we are smarter than that this time but they are Sneaky!!

What's this? I'm not sure what your saying. Are you telling me you're ballot from the state of Florida has campaign adds on the envelope?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:55 PM on 09/18/2008

Make sure that the address for the return of your ballot is legitimate. The McCain campaign is sending out mail applications in all the swing states that have bad returns and then you won't be voting in this election.

Most states/counties allow you to download the application to vote by mail from the web. Since you obviously have access you might consider that to be sure you're getting the real deal.

Obama can forget about Florida. Who, do you think, was the target audience for Lieberman's speech at the Republican Convention. He was speaking directly to the Jewish retirees from Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, North Miami Beach, Naples, etc. Ordinarily, they'd be voting overwhelmingly Democratic, but not this election cycle. There are two basic reasons: (1) there is a strong affection for the Clintons and the wounds from the primaries have not fully healed; (2) Obama's middle name (not that he can do anythng about it). Add to the above factors McCain's vocal backing from Senator Lieberman, who happens to be one of the most influential and respected politicians in the Jewish-American community today, and it becomes obvious that Obama can kiss Florida Good-Bye.
As far as Ohio goes, with Palin on the ticket and all the Evangelical support that comes along with it, McCain is simply unbeatable there.

P.S. Let me give you a clue about the polls. Undecideds, historically speaking, break down heavily in the favour of the incumbent party (i.e. McCain). Of course, the Obama campaign is going to say this time is different. However, in my humble opinion, it's just wishful thinking on their part.

Guess he doesn't have enough violent thugs to send to both states. He sure used them at the caucus tho didn't he. So now it comes out he is saying get in their face, he had to have told them that during the caucus...how do you think he won them. AND I KNOW BECAUSE I SAW IT IN ACTION.........

I think it is wrong to assume that Ohio is a state full of nothing but ignorant, unread, drooling evangelical fundamentalists. Yes, they do have problems there, but they defeated Creationism in the state's science curriculum. They have an active branch of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. They have many respected universities and a large amount of very educated intelligent non-fundamentalist people, just like any other state.

Yes, Ohio had a Republican governor who allowed the rape of its economy (he modeled himself after George W. Bush), the public school system has been almost destroyed by vouchers to religious schools, and the state is rife with mind-control bible cults that use sophisticated behavior modification techniques and brainwashing to get members. But that is all the more reason Obama shouldn't give up on Ohio.

If the legislature would do something about putting limits on how much money religious institutions can acquire, many of these problems would go away. Because, Christian fascism does prosper and grow powerful in Ohio.

Just last week, MSNBC put Florida in the McCain column -- well it is looking very blue these days.

I think Ohio is probably a lost cause. Florida is really a long shot, probably a better chance of getting virginia or maybe even indiana.

But Obama can win it without any of those as long as he takes Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Colorado and New Mexico. I'd like to see him take more for a more comfortable victory, but those are probably his best shots.

Polling wise, he's doing better in Fla and Ohio than Va. Sounds odd to me, but that's what the numbers say right now.

RCP has Obama looking better in virginia than florida with ohio the best of the three. At this point I'd say they're all a crapshoot. Regardless of what the numbers say, I think florida probably is most likely to have voters turned away at the polls and swinging that state.

I live in Ohio. It has always amazed me how the blue collar workers in Ohio never fail to vote against their own best interests.

Lately though, there is a change in the air. I have heard a few of those workers admitted that Obama has some really good ideas. Ohio just might be a surprise this election.

I say the people in Pa and Ohio and in Lousianna should ask themselves what the Republican party has done for them? The economy and job losses should be enought to wake them up and after Katrina......how can those people in Lousianna ever vote for Bush the Third.

I hope he continues to poor resources into Colorado. If he holds Kerry states and adds IA, and NM which it's looking in the bag, then Colorado, FL AND OH are mute points.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:54 PM on 09/18/2008

I don't think ANY state is moot (not mute).

My hope is that Obama sees a landslide victory in ALL states (though I know Kentucky & WV will be pretty tough). I just find it hard to believe, after all the exposes of McCain & Palin, that they would have enough support to make this appear even remotely close.

Isn't it obvious that Obama has the best interest of the whole country in mind, and McCain just wants to fight another war?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:04 PM on 09/18/2008

There are just too many variables at play to predict an Obama win at this point. Having said that, if nothing changes between now and the election, he might just pull it off. However, anything can happen between now and then. Namely, Bush picks a fight with Iran and Russian enters the fray to fight on Iran's side. This puts National Security back into play, and questions about the economy suddenly become a distant dream. I know this sounds trite, but "it's not over till the fat lady sings."

So has Richard Riordan, former Republican mayor of L.A.

He said that in his few dealings with McCain, he had come to dislike the man.

Your faith in a win for Obama in both Florida and Ohio is admirable, but the odds are right now that there is no way he'll win both, maybe one of the two. I believe McCain must win both to win the presidency, however. The good thing about Ohio is that it has a Democratic governor and secretary of state. In 2004 Republicans held those positions and helped rig the election apparatus to give Bush a phony victory. The two democrats are working to level the playing field. In fact, Jennifer Brunner, current Ohio secretary of state, has recently issued an order permitting voters to register on the same day they vote. The order makes it much harder for Republicans to cage Obama voters. And yes, you guessed it; the Republicans are suing Brunner to stop same day registration. What an anti-American, fascist move! I am anxiously awaiting the outcome because I know Republicans can't beat Obama in Ohio without vote caging and other shenanigans as they are far too unpopular.

While I would take an Obama victory anyway I can, I almost want him to win but lose Ohio and Florida (with the Western Strategy), just to show that those two states are no longer monolithic in deciding national politics. It might set those people straight.

More state polls out today:

First, polls from AllState/National Journal:
-- Colorado: Obama 45%, McCain 44%
-- Florida: McCain 44%, Obama 44%
-- New Mexico: Obama 49%, McCain 42%
-- Ohio: McCain 42%, Obama 41%
-- Virginia: McCain 48%, Obama 41%

University of Wisconsin:
-- Illinois: Obama 52.9%, McCain 37.0%
-- Indiana: McCain 46.7%, Obama 43.2%
-- Iowa: McCain 44.8%, Obama 44.8%
-- Michigan: Obama 47.8%, McCain 43.8%
-- Minnesota: Obama 47.3%, McCain 44.5%
-- Ohio: Obama 45.6%, McCain 45.1%
-- Pennsylvania: Obama 45.0%, McCain 44.6%
-- Wisconsin: Obama 45.2%, McCain 44.3%

The Florida number backs the CBS one from yesterday -- dead even.

The Iowa number looks wrong. Obama is double digits ahead there.

The Iowa numbers look like outliers to me, too, since every poll I've seen recently has had O up by double digits.

I too will be sending Obama money today. But I wouldn't get to hasty in ruling on Ohio just yet. They found out they were losing another 3,200 jobs, ontop of the 1,200 lost last week, and the 8,200 lost two weeks before (thanks to Steve Schmidt).... Ohio might actually surprise us by waking the heck up and realizing that the loss of their jobs has had a direct impact on their clueless voting record.

Come on Ohio... smarten up already!!!!
