On Tuesday, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent a video to reporters laying out the political landscape with less than 50 days until the election. In it, he made a startling pronouncement: the Obama campaign was going to spend a total of $39 million in Florida, a state that, while classified as a battleground, is considered a long shot for the Democrat.

"Bush won Florida by 380,000 votes in 2004. If you look at the number of registered African-Americans who did not turn out in '04 it is over a half million; 900,000 registered young voters didn't turn out. There are over 1.4 million voters who we consider base voters who didn't register. Obviously there are a couple million more registered targets," explained Plouffe. "We have enough base voters in Florida to win the election if we can just turn them out. "

The "under the hood" peek at Obama's Sunshine State operation was met with general surprise. Such a budget, after all, would come at the expense of other battleground states that seemed much more promising.

In actuality, the Obama campaign has long seen Florida as fertile turf. Indeed a high-ranking adviser to the Senator told the Huffington Post several weeks ago, explicitly, that they envisioned more opportunity there than in Ohio and would be focusing their efforts likewise.

Another aide to the campaign said that Plouffe understood the Senator's chances in Florida. In addition to the million-plus registered voters who had not turned out in 2004, the campaign was targeting up to another million of African-Americans, youth and Latinos who were unregistered. In addition, Obama's aides have spearheaded a faith outreach drive to woo the large swath of religious voters who reside, primarily, in the northern part of the state. All these groups, the high-ranking official noted, were targeted heavily in Ohio back in 2004, making the margin for growth there far narrower.

And if Kerry's 400,000-vote loss to Bush in 2004 was a baseline, he added, then there were obvious avenues through which Obama could make up that ground.

"A few years ago the state party was in debt. They got creamed in '02, and '00 was demoralizing," the aide said. "Kerry campaigned here but he did it too late. In places like North Florida he got killed. That won't happen this time around. There are pockets in North Florida where 20 or 25 percent of African-Americans chose Bush over Kerry."

There are, of course, variables to this equation. For starters, because Democratic candidates agreed not to campaign in Florida during the primary, Obama was not able to woo voters (he did fundraise) in the state until this spring. He started really organizing a ground game only in July. As such, the campaign has just under 50 offices there as opposed to the nearly 70 it has functioning in Ohio.

The McCain campaign, meanwhile, has clearly invested in Florida as well, with the Senator recently making a stop in Jacksonville and previously appearing multiple times alongside the state's governor, Charlie Crist. The GOP, moreover, has been willing to push the envelope in the Sunshine State. On Tuesday, it was reported that the Republican National Committee, authorized by the McCain campaign, was sending out mailings confusing Democratic voters by telling them "We have you registered as a Republican."

Earlier in the week, it was discovered that the Republican Jewish Coalition had commissioned a poll in Florida and elsewhere that phrased questions designed to make Obama look like a stooge of the Palestinians.

On the flip side, there is Sarah Palin. The Alaska governor may be a boost to conservative hopes throughout the country, but in the Sunshine State her candidacy may be a liability. There is a sense of skepticism within the Jewish community over her religious affiliations, as well as allegations that she supported Pat Buchanan's run for the White House in 2000. Palin, the McCain campaign has noted, voted for Steve Forbes in that election. Nevertheless, Jewish community's concerns (stoked, it should be noted, by the Obama campaign) could prove the difference in what is shaping up to be yet another closely fought election.

On Tuesday, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent a video to reporters laying out the political landscape with less than 50 days until the election. In it, he made a startling pronouncement...

While I appreciate your comment, it is just begging the trolls to tear it apart.

Be careful what comments you make. The trolls are pretty crafty and able to rearrange words and reinterpret them into what they choose.

What does Baruch mean?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:22 PM on 09/18/2008

Baruch is a Jewish name, so it appears the author is trying to tell us that Obama is
somehow connected to the Jews/Israel, perhaps that Obama will be doing the bidding
of Israel, while neglecting American interests, sort of what Bush has done.

They're probably right. The WRWC here in my neck of the woods are amazingly anti Obama if for no other reason than "his name sounds funny." It's crazy! The ones I know who are undercover supporters would rather be tazed then beaten with a hot poker than admit they plan on voting for Obama.

I think I will send him some more money today. He is going to need it to win Florida. And if the last 2 elections have taught us anything, it is that Florida gets to decide who will be president.

No, it's one more state than Gore or Kerry got that wins Obama the election. For sure that state is Iowa which Bush took by 0.7% in 2004 and in which Obama now leads by at least 9. That said, I'll take FL and OH too.

That was only the last 2 elections. Any guess why? Perhaps the fact that the Prez's Bro was the Governor of that state might have something to do with it?

He is no longer the Governor of Fla, so that statement may not hold up this election.

So the GOP and McCain post card/mailer is another attempt at potential Caging the Votes for the elderly people in FL? Are the GOP not thinking that the rest of the country isn't noticing when they do some antics which might allow them to challenge list people? My concern with the elderly is that they do go into assisted living situations and yep some of us all die without age being the one factor but people who live in assisted living facilities and simular facilities should be sought out and made sure the can still vote and the address has been changed to allow them to do so. The mail in voting systems can be utlized for these who have trouble getting to the voting booth so if you work in one, live in one, have family in one be proactive and help them get the addresses and information correct for their vote. Thank YOU!!

I always thought Ohio was more winnable than Fla, simply because of the economy issue. But then someone started telling me that there are a lot of rednecks down in the southern parts of the state, which is canceling out the advantage O has in the big cities.

Hamilton county (Cincinnati and vicinity) has a lot of "Kentucky" in it and has always been pretty conservative. Word is, however, that it's gotten a little more bluish in recent years.

OH is the most FUBAR state in the country. They voted against their interests in 2000 and 2004 and they are threatening to do so again. Is it the most stupid person per capita state in the union?

The McCain camp will not concede IF the election is close.
And the Democrats will see how they SHOULD HAVE FOUGHT after 2000.

They care nothing about Democracy and overthrow it anywhere in the world that they find it.

If Obama wins more than 300 EVs, the McCain campaign will have nothing to fight for.

Let them cry and self implode while we take our country back.

It's not just the state of McCain's mental health that is alarming. Has anyone else noticed the extraordinary change in McCain's appearance over the past few days? Until very recently, his complexion was either pasty or a smooth beige, depending on whether he was made up or not. But since Monday, his face has become a mask of burnished leather. Take a look. I do not exaggerate.

He is beginning to look like one of those mysterious "bog people," whose preserved bodies are dug up from time to time from the ancient marshlands of northern Europe. It's very impressive, but is it really what we want to see in a candidate for high office?

I did, and yes, we are used to his bristling hostility when questioned, but that outburst was entirely unprovoked by anything Mika said.

When he did the morning shows this week he looked really tired. My husband and I both noticed. He was also a grump.

When will he release his full medical records?

I do not wish ill health on anyone, but the American people deserve to know the health of all of our candidates.

What Obama is essentially doing is forcing McCain's campaign to overplay their hand in Florida, thus taking McCain's eye off the other battleground states and allowing Obama to gain ground there, thanks to the community organizers.

How ironic would it be for McCain's campaign to lose at the hands of the community organizers they continually mock and dismiss???!?

I tried to explain to a middle aged small business owner who is supporting Palin/ McCain that this is a very important election. That we have had 30 years of ReagaNOMICS and it doesn't work. His response was IT WORKED FOR ME.

He could care less than the spit in his mouth that our Banks are in Crisis Mode. The American public really is that Dumb. I think we need a Great Depression just to clear out all the stupid people.

May be because he is scared of getting taxed out of business!
Obama even in these hard economic times will raise taxes on the middle class by allowing the current tax law reverts back to the Clinton rates.
…..Lowest tax rate: McCain will hold level at 10% Obama will raise it to 15%
…..Marriage penalty: McCain no tax under $150,000 Obama full tax from dollar one
…..Child tax credit: McCain holds at $1000 Obama will reduce to $500
…..Self-Employment Rate: McCain 37.9% (current) Obama raises to 54.9%
More than half of what you earn being self employed!

Tell him that McCain will be taxing his medical benefits for the first time.

Some people are pocketbook voters -- they only care about taxes. I know a few of these. It's best if you can tell them how it will cost them more under McCain.

Barack had Florida in the bag???? What happened???? Can someone please explain this to me I'm starting to get worried. I think Ohio is out of the question now. I hope we hold onto PA. If we don't we will never win. I heard NJ and NY are also closing tightly. What is going on here!!!

Quit listening to the repubs spin the polls.

Obama is still competing in Ohio, but he is focusing mainly on Florida so that McCain can do the same and take his attention off of other battleground states, allowing Obama to successfully gain ground.

Strategy, my friend.

I think Plouffe is looking at new registration numbers in the states, and they have a huge number in Florida. The current polls there are undercounting these new registrants, so not fully taking account of Obama's strength. Organization there is excellent.

PA shouldn't be a problem. Bob Barr, the Libertarian candidate, will be listed on the ballot, and will pull support from McCain.

Southern Ohio is a problem, same with southern Indiana. It will be tight.

He Never had Florida in the bag. The most probably winning scenarios for Obama don't actually include Florida. It would a nice git, but not necessary. If it becomes necessary, then that means Obama is really in trouble.

Ohio isn't really like Florida, so I'm not sure it's necessarily the case that they would vote the same. Once again, however, Obama can win without it; it's just better not to try.

Gotta be more upbeat, EuroAllie. We're cool.

I don't know. Florida? Obama has only led in 3 of the last 20 polls. And 2 of those were in July. Maybe their internals are better. Maybe because the population is more fluid, they suspect a larger margin of error.

I think OH is a long shot, too. The best path to victory is the IA/CO/NM trifecta, where he's continued to poll well throughout the McCain bump.

Obama's team has shown an ability to plan for multiple outcomes that has been astonishing I am so jealous. No matter what happens they seem to have already thought it out and planned for the nest step. If you've run run a business you know haw hard this is. If you have run any kind of project you know how hard this is. These guys are good, no, these guys are scary good. All Kinds of people have been giving them input and support and we need to keep it up. But if you asked me, I'd tell ya trust Obama's team to get it done.
