On Tuesday, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent a video to reporters laying out the political landscape with less than 50 days until the election. In it, he made a startling pronouncement: the Obama campaign was going to spend a total of $39 million in Florida, a state that, while classified as a battleground, is considered a long shot for the Democrat.

"Bush won Florida by 380,000 votes in 2004. If you look at the number of registered African-Americans who did not turn out in '04 it is over a half million; 900,000 registered young voters didn't turn out. There are over 1.4 million voters who we consider base voters who didn't register. Obviously there are a couple million more registered targets," explained Plouffe. "We have enough base voters in Florida to win the election if we can just turn them out. "

The "under the hood" peek at Obama's Sunshine State operation was met with general surprise. Such a budget, after all, would come at the expense of other battleground states that seemed much more promising.

In actuality, the Obama campaign has long seen Florida as fertile turf. Indeed a high-ranking adviser to the Senator told the Huffington Post several weeks ago, explicitly, that they envisioned more opportunity there than in Ohio and would be focusing their efforts likewise.

Another aide to the campaign said that Plouffe understood the Senator's chances in Florida. In addition to the million-plus registered voters who had not turned out in 2004, the campaign was targeting up to another million of African-Americans, youth and Latinos who were unregistered. In addition, Obama's aides have spearheaded a faith outreach drive to woo the large swath of religious voters who reside, primarily, in the northern part of the state. All these groups, the high-ranking official noted, were targeted heavily in Ohio back in 2004, making the margin for growth there far narrower.

And if Kerry's 400,000-vote loss to Bush in 2004 was a baseline, he added, then there were obvious avenues through which Obama could make up that ground.

"A few years ago the state party was in debt. They got creamed in '02, and '00 was demoralizing," the aide said. "Kerry campaigned here but he did it too late. In places like North Florida he got killed. That won't happen this time around. There are pockets in North Florida where 20 or 25 percent of African-Americans chose Bush over Kerry."

There are, of course, variables to this equation. For starters, because Democratic candidates agreed not to campaign in Florida during the primary, Obama was not able to woo voters (he did fundraise) in the state until this spring. He started really organizing a ground game only in July. As such, the campaign has just under 50 offices there as opposed to the nearly 70 it has functioning in Ohio.

The McCain campaign, meanwhile, has clearly invested in Florida as well, with the Senator recently making a stop in Jacksonville and previously appearing multiple times alongside the state's governor, Charlie Crist. The GOP, moreover, has been willing to push the envelope in the Sunshine State. On Tuesday, it was reported that the Republican National Committee, authorized by the McCain campaign, was sending out mailings confusing Democratic voters by telling them "We have you registered as a Republican."

Earlier in the week, it was discovered that the Republican Jewish Coalition had commissioned a poll in Florida and elsewhere that phrased questions designed to make Obama look like a stooge of the Palestinians.

On the flip side, there is Sarah Palin. The Alaska governor may be a boost to conservative hopes throughout the country, but in the Sunshine State her candidacy may be a liability. There is a sense of skepticism within the Jewish community over her religious affiliations, as well as allegations that she supported Pat Buchanan's run for the White House in 2000. Palin, the McCain campaign has noted, voted for Steve Forbes in that election. Nevertheless, Jewish community's concerns (stoked, it should be noted, by the Obama campaign) could prove the difference in what is shaping up to be yet another closely fought election.

On Tuesday, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent a video to reporters laying out the political landscape with less than 50 days until the election. In it, he made a startling pronouncement...

OK, so McCain has "Anita Bryant of Anchorage" on his side. What concerns me the most is voter suppression, particularly aimed at African-Americans. What went on in 2000 and again in 2004 was unbelievable. Between purging the voter rolls and intimidation by police, enough Black voters were disenfranchised to make the difference for Bush. What's to think it won't happen in 2008?

Look to your own, ACORN.

I notice you do not put dates on any of this. The ACORN indictment was in 2006. The law firm for which Barack 0bama worked defended ACORN in a case in 1995.

I live in Virginia. I didn't know so many black people lived in VA until the primaries when Obama trounced Hillary. Don't worry. They will be out in force on Nov 4.

Wilder won Virginia in 1989 by combining the African-American vote with Pro-choice GOP women, a concerted effort to keep Democrats at home in the "Fighting Ninth", and a really good turnout in NOVA.

This year there are even more African-American voters, NOVA is an even bigger % of the total electorate, and just enough Pro-choice GOP women will probably not vote McCain/Palin to make a difference.

And Wilder is Mayor of Richmond. It's not in the bag, but it's looking REALLY good.

Katharine Harris is selling Tupperware in Longboat Key. She won't be a problem anymore. The GOoPers will be deploying "poll watchers" to the heavily-Black precincts to "challenge" would-be voters. They will be going after the elderly and anybody else they can intimidate.

Actually, if he won NM & NV, but lost CO, it would be a tie (269-269) in which case Congress would cast the deciding vote (meaning Obama would win).

Taking Florida would probably clinch the election for Obama but there are many paths to victory that do not include winning Florida. Don't want to put too many eggs in one basket.

You need serious help. You lie, you can't spell, and your grammar is just plain awful. Educate yourself to be a better more informed person, not to mention learn how to write, and you might one day make a somewhat persuasive argument. Or are you really just a computer program like I've long suspected?

If what Obama's FORMER pastor did in 1984 matters to some voters enough to make them switch their vote to Cain and Unable, they are too uninformed to vote for Obama anyway.

Sorry Dude. But with Palin the "super rightwing, religious, can't wait to get rid of separation of church and state" chosen as McBarelySane's running mate, the Jewish vote belongs to Obama. Qaddafi and Minister Farrakham cannot affect American policy. This CaribouBarbie would be in a position to do a lot of damage to religious freedom in this country. Checkmate.

He lost the Jewish vote in FL, no question. He lost the older white vote. Then, he stripped them of their votes.

Frankly, he has no business even being competitive there. Or in Mi.

We told him. He ignored us.

O does what O wants to do.

I hope at Barack's last speech to the winning President McCain that he unreleashes but keeps his class and restraints: "Dear fellow Americans, you have decided that this country would be better run by Republican McCain-Palin. I wish you good health, wealth, peace and tranquility--which you will not see but I pray you will find some way to survive the next four years which will be brutal, harsh, uncontrolled, frightening, violent, dangerous, chaos and havoc. You can state that I am bitter, but, you will see me go on with my live and wife and two daughters, back to my home and life and please do not contact me when the visions I had about this country come true, because they were nightmares that I tried so hard to protect you from, to shield you, to prevent. I will not run again. I now see this country will always be in the hands Bush and their cronies. I will keep you in my prayers because as a Christian that is what I do--but what your next four years will be ones that bring us all to our knees in desperation, and, standing above us watching without care or concern will be your new President and VP.

Florida is the ideal spot to pour extra resources into. It is such a high-visibility state in every political arena that whatever Obama can pick up there will have a spillover effect nationally. Unlike in Ohio, Palin doesn't seem a good match for Floridians so there will be less of that to contend with. It's a way to go one-on-one with McCain without the Palin sub-text mucking things up. Good use of $$$.

Obama/Biden can win both FL and OH...however if he takes VA, CO and MO, he wouldn't even need them. This ticket speaks to the concerns of the people, McCain/Palin speaks in bumpersticker phrases, which are cute, but they are meaningless; Palin sounds like, well Tracy Flick, running for school council or head cheerleader, not VP, McCain's age and aloofness are showing, and he lacks substance. Saying, "I was a POW" is not enough anymore, if it ever was.

Looks like more dirty tricks by the GOP. I'm glad Obama is confident in Florida, but I don't think he should rule out Ohio. The last poll I saw from the Buckeye state had him leading by 2%.

I hope that the polls stay close because that will keep voter turnout high, if that happens then it is a landslide. Voter regristation is so important in Florida and the push by the Obama camp is crucial.

As long as Obama surpasses Bush in registration and turnout, Obama will win pretty handily in the election.

It's clear that Kerry lost in 2004 mainly due to registered Dems not turning out to vote for him. This year is a different year, and more people are excited about turning out to vote for Obama than about turning out to vote for McCain.

If McCain focuses exclusively on Florida, then he will lose whatever ground he has in the other toss up states, that's what Obama's campaign is doing by switching their attention from Ohio to Florida. They want the McCain campaign to spend most, if not all of their money on Florida, and thus, give Obama the chance to gain ground in other tossup states. Smart move by the Obama campaign.

Another poster has suggested you take sheet of paper with you. On it, write the date & time, your name & address, your ss# (last 4 digits) and the candidate you voted for.

When you turn in your ballot, have the election official SIGN your paper as proof of receipt.

Feel free to share!

Obama has so many opportunities to get to 270. Look at the Republican states that McCain has to defend:

Florida
Ohio
Iowa
New Mexico
Missouri
Colorado
Virginia
Indiana
Montana
North Carolina

Iowa and New Mexico are basically in the bag. All Obama has to do is win '1' other state, and he wins the election. Good luck defending those states, John McCain.

Joe Biden just spoke in Stark County (Canton, Ohio). We are doing everything to turn Ohio Blue. Local Polls are better to watch than National. Ohio is swinging his way. Ohio has an integrated grassroots effort for him as well as local candidates. We will take it this election. It is well orchestrated. Too many lost jobs and foreclosures. The independent doubters are closing their eyes and using their ears to pick the candidate now, based on leadership, platform and best plan for those of us in the vast majority. That candidate is Barack Obama.
