On Tuesday, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent a video to reporters laying out the political landscape with less than 50 days until the election. In it, he made a startling pronouncement: the Obama campaign was going to spend a total of $39 million in Florida, a state that, while classified as a battleground, is considered a long shot for the Democrat.

"Bush won Florida by 380,000 votes in 2004. If you look at the number of registered African-Americans who did not turn out in '04 it is over a half million; 900,000 registered young voters didn't turn out. There are over 1.4 million voters who we consider base voters who didn't register. Obviously there are a couple million more registered targets," explained Plouffe. "We have enough base voters in Florida to win the election if we can just turn them out. "

The "under the hood" peek at Obama's Sunshine State operation was met with general surprise. Such a budget, after all, would come at the expense of other battleground states that seemed much more promising.

In actuality, the Obama campaign has long seen Florida as fertile turf. Indeed a high-ranking adviser to the Senator told the Huffington Post several weeks ago, explicitly, that they envisioned more opportunity there than in Ohio and would be focusing their efforts likewise.

Another aide to the campaign said that Plouffe understood the Senator's chances in Florida. In addition to the million-plus registered voters who had not turned out in 2004, the campaign was targeting up to another million of African-Americans, youth and Latinos who were unregistered. In addition, Obama's aides have spearheaded a faith outreach drive to woo the large swath of religious voters who reside, primarily, in the northern part of the state. All these groups, the high-ranking official noted, were targeted heavily in Ohio back in 2004, making the margin for growth there far narrower.

And if Kerry's 400,000-vote loss to Bush in 2004 was a baseline, he added, then there were obvious avenues through which Obama could make up that ground.

"A few years ago the state party was in debt. They got creamed in '02, and '00 was demoralizing," the aide said. "Kerry campaigned here but he did it too late. In places like North Florida he got killed. That won't happen this time around. There are pockets in North Florida where 20 or 25 percent of African-Americans chose Bush over Kerry."

There are, of course, variables to this equation. For starters, because Democratic candidates agreed not to campaign in Florida during the primary, Obama was not able to woo voters (he did fundraise) in the state until this spring. He started really organizing a ground game only in July. As such, the campaign has just under 50 offices there as opposed to the nearly 70 it has functioning in Ohio.

The McCain campaign, meanwhile, has clearly invested in Florida as well, with the Senator recently making a stop in Jacksonville and previously appearing multiple times alongside the state's governor, Charlie Crist. The GOP, moreover, has been willing to push the envelope in the Sunshine State. On Tuesday, it was reported that the Republican National Committee, authorized by the McCain campaign, was sending out mailings confusing Democratic voters by telling them "We have you registered as a Republican."

Earlier in the week, it was discovered that the Republican Jewish Coalition had commissioned a poll in Florida and elsewhere that phrased questions designed to make Obama look like a stooge of the Palestinians.

On the flip side, there is Sarah Palin. The Alaska governor may be a boost to conservative hopes throughout the country, but in the Sunshine State her candidacy may be a liability. There is a sense of skepticism within the Jewish community over her religious affiliations, as well as allegations that she supported Pat Buchanan's run for the White House in 2000. Palin, the McCain campaign has noted, voted for Steve Forbes in that election. Nevertheless, Jewish community's concerns (stoked, it should be noted, by the Obama campaign) could prove the difference in what is shaping up to be yet another closely fought election.

On Tuesday, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent a video to reporters laying out the political landscape with less than 50 days until the election. In it, he made a startling pronouncement...

How about running a very aggressive "vote-caging" effort against the Repuglicans? I haven't seen any indication that this is in the works. While the typical Republican will have better documents to fight it, they will also be flustered, because they're not accustomed to being treated badly at the polls, whereas our voters expect that sort of thing.

I THINK that the latest economic spiral is a sufficient 'vote caging' effort. That's really really really DIRTY and NO Democrat would be party to it. There's a difference between calling out while a campaign is still going on. The elections are 'decided' by the PEOPLE. There is an effort afoot in ALL these 'battleground' states to get voters registered and GET THEM TO THE POLLS. There will be an election worker every 2 feet at a polling place. There will be challenges and counter challenges and the DEMS will WIN.

Isn't the best way to talk to Fla voters is social security, and reminding them that McCain supported privatizing it and investing it in stocks. The same stocks which are now tumbling down faster than his poll numbers. I mean...isn't this the proverbial nail in the coffin???

Obama is still running in this thing?

Crikey, you'd never know it from the news. All McPalin, all the time.

Even on this web page, it's all McPalin. I understand that it is mostly negative pieces on the HuffPo, but still, negative attention is better than no attention. Any 17 year old can tell you that.

People need to start getting the Obama name out there on the lips of newscasters and potential voters nationwide.

I'm not as frightened of Ms. Sarah as I once was, but the woman has really put a charge into the whole election. McCain played it right. He chose a relative unknown so that news agencies had no choice but to talk about her virtually non stop. Shrewd move by Mr. McCain.

he "chose" such an unknown, he forgot to vet her and didn't know she was currently under investigation for abuse of power.

Smart move by McCain... for the Democrats.

Trust me to say that there are plenty of Jews in Florida who will vote Obama. They know he is not a Muslim and know that Israel is the only country who is an ally of the US and therefore NO ONE will let anything happen to Israel. Florida can be a reality for Obama....we must make it one!

mamala4, I hope you are right, but I'm still a bit worried about the Jewish vote there, and elsewhere. (And just for the record, I am a Jew).

I know that, historically, Jews have generally voted Democrat, but there the there have been a lot of negative rumors about Obama (eg. he's a "registered" Muslim), and "push polling" specifically targeting fears that he's a "Muslim sympathizer", and that he won't protect Israel. Judging from the comments I've been reading in on Jewish sites, I'm embarrassed to say, it looks like a lot of people have taken the bait.

I just hope that what I've read is not representative of the majority of Jewish opinion, and that they will vote on facts, not rumors.

McCain's people are making a big big mistake with these sleazy tactics targeting Jewish voters.

BTW Israel is not the only ally of the U.S. Much of the world does like us, but they despise what's been going over the past eight years.

Speaking of Ohio as a battleground state - I'm wondering if they'll be using the Diebold electronic voting machines again this year:
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0225-05.htm
February 25, 2004
Diebold Voting Machines
Diebold’s current CEO Walden “Wally” O’Dell, resides in Columbus’ northwest suburb Upper Arlington. One of President George W. Bush’s major donors, O’Dell is on record stating that he is “committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the President” this year. None of these Diebold machines will provide a paper receipt of the vote.

Diebold is now Premier Voting Systems, or something like that.

And Ohio is now Dem territory, since Gov Strickland is a Dem and the Secretary of state there is a Dem.

Gov Strickland also said that he will keep a close watch on voting in Ohio, and Kenny Blackwell is now out of power, yay!

When you turn in your ballot, have the election official SIGN your paper as proof of receipt.

Feel free to share!

And wear BLUE on election day to show you voted for O!

Crist is NOT popular, not many in this state would vote a certain way because of his recommedation. I think FL is absolutely obtainable, but he needs big rallys in Orlando and Tampa to make that happen.

He could skip Jacksonville, but Orlando is critical, no surrogates just Obama himself. Florida in general is quite laid back, so he needs to hurry before the registration deadline Oct 6 otherwise nobody will get off their ass and do it!

He things he can beat us in Florida because he'll have more registered voters and more of them show up at the polls. But, he can't beat us if we suppress the vote count in minority districts with altered or tampered with voting machines, and if we make the poor people wait in line for 3 hours, or when we use our caging lists to invalidate the registrations of 100k of his supporters.

Wait - did I say too much?

Someone posted somewhere else that anyone who can should early vote. This will free up polls on election day for new voters, elderly voters, or sick voters who need healthcare and are voting to get it! I agree with this. If you live in a place that's likely to have a high Democratic turnout due to new voters, vote early! That way, they'll have less time to wait in line.

And more good news about Florida. Bob Barr is a TRUE spoiler:

"CNN/Time: "New polls in five battleground states that could decide the presidency suggest the battle for the White House between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama remains a dead heat. The CNN/Time Magazine/Opinion Research Corp. polls, out Wednesday, indicate that the race for Florida, and its 27 electoral votes, is tied up."

When Bob Barr, Ralph Nader and Cynthia McKinney are added to the choices, the Sept. 14-16 poll has it Obama 48 percent, McCain 44 percent."

Some more Ohio facts relating to Kerry's loss (if indeed is was a loss).

1) Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner. Democrat. Defender of the people's right to vote. Caging will be monitored, registrations will be honored, and people won't have to wait 16 hours to vote in Democratic neighborhoods. That could make up you 115k right there. No Ken Blackwell this time.

2) Democratic Governor Ted Strickland. Dem. Gov. is from the southern part of the state and should be able to mitigate (somewhat) the Appalachian and small town part of the state. No GOP Gov. this time.

Florida has a GOP Gov, and no paper trails. Even Diabold admits its systems can be hacked.

I hope you all clicked the link to the Tampa newspaper:

"The first-class GOP mailing has a "Do not forward" instruction on the envelope, meaning they will be returned to the GOP if a recipient has had mail forwarded, perhaps to a summer address, or has moved.

Letters returned as undeliverable can be compiled into "challenge lists" of unverifiable addresses and can be used to challenge voters' eligibility during early voting or on Election Day. The vote suppression technique is known as "vote caging.""

Here we go AGAIN! TRICKY DICK MCCAIN And JEB BUSH are at it again, trying to disenfranchise voters.

Someone in the DNC better get down there ASAP and get to the bottom of this.
