Politico:

Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, a maverick Republican from Maryland, endorsed Illinois Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president in an interview with WYPR, Baltimore's National Public Radio station Wednesday.

Gilchrest, who lost a primary campaign and is retiring from Congress, has already endorsed the Democrat running for his seat, Frank Kratovil. Justifying his endorsement of Obama, Gilchrest said that "we can't use four more years of the same kind of policy that's somewhat haphazard, which leads to recklessness."

Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), "have the breadth of experience. I think they're prudent. They're knowledgable."

The Repub party really needs to be split into 2: the rapid neo-cons (Rush Limbaugh/Ann Coulter/Sarah Palin crowd) and the moderates (Arnold, Pataki, and others)... Otherwise, the neo-cons are like a rock around the moderate's neck.

Why is it that only the republicans who have nothing to lose endorse? What about the ones who are still in government? Grow a pair.

I'm sorry, but Wayne Gilchrest is just looking for political gain after Marylander's in the first district could not stand his policies and ousted him. He lost bad in the primaries, and will not be returning to congress, Andy Harris will most likely be the next representative our that district. And NuOrigin, Marylander are mostly sensible, except for in Prince George's, Montgomery, Howard and Baltimore County. They are the core democrat constituency in Maryland, and thus receive all the funding and projects to improve their area, while us in Southern Maryland receive nothing, take a trip over the Solomons bridge sometime, it is decrepit and handels a large influx of traffic. Back to my point, Gilchrest is far from a maverick and the wheels of the republican party are falling off. The only real maverick in Maryland is Steny Hoyer, even though I am a republican, Steny has always made sure that his district is taken care of and makes up for the lack of state funds coming our way. Wayne Gilchrest was, is, and always be a RINO.

How is he looking for political gain? He lost in the primary.

Thank you Rep. Gilchrest, for putting principles first, and party second.

I would support a Republican that truly believed in and acted consistently with their values. However, like searching for an honest preacher, I haven't found one yet.

I guess the republicans are not all Right wing wackos. They are the reason I no longer consider myself a republican nor will I vote for one as long as they are held hostage by the fanatics on the right.

When I was younger I voted for many Republicans. I know that we all change as we grow older, but I think the GOP has changed even more than I have. Now I wonder if I will outlast them, or they will outlast me.

It's Republicans like you that should give the Republican party hope of one day restoring it's dignity and integrity. Thank you for your honesty.

I agree, I didn't mind Republicans when they were reasonable. But after the idiotic takeover by the religious right and the ultra-cons who came in 1994, they have been unbearable -- you can't even talk to those people!

Could the wheels be coming off the Republican party? Have they brought about their own unraveling?

What will Rush Limbaugh do for a living?

We Marylanders are blue, but reasonable. Remember, we just had a Republican governor. WG is reasonable, and that's why he was as successful in our blue state.

Way to go Wayne.

Next!

Yesterday CNN and Fox spent all day interviewing and discussing that idiot nobody Rothschild who is meaningless. She was a 100,000 donor and fundraiser? BIG DEAL. This was a staunch Republican congressman for years and endorsed a Democratic Presidential candidate and not even a mention on CNN or Fox?

I think some Republicans are starting to smell the manure from their party....After being fed all that crap for so long.
