Politico:

Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, a maverick Republican from Maryland, endorsed Illinois Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president in an interview with WYPR, Baltimore's National Public Radio station Wednesday.

Gilchrest, who lost a primary campaign and is retiring from Congress, has already endorsed the Democrat running for his seat, Frank Kratovil. Justifying his endorsement of Obama, Gilchrest said that "we can't use four more years of the same kind of policy that's somewhat haphazard, which leads to recklessness."

Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), "have the breadth of experience. I think they're prudent. They're knowledgable."

I hope he already owns enough life insurance, because he's going to have a hard time finding anyone who'll sell him any after endorsing Barack Obama as a republican.

Republicans on the economy:
"The fundamentals are still strong"
"Print baby, print" (more money).
"Print here, print now, pay later"

Like I said yesterday. It appears that there are some repubes who may actually have a conscience and are willing to come out and place country over party. Where have they been this last eight years?

Providing they wake up and come over, lets not focus on where they've been, but welcome them and their support. As you say...Country First!
Hopefully, more will follow. I think they'll be surprised at the real respect they get from their countrymen.

Attempting to use the neoconservatards to advance segments of their stated collective agenda - and then finding things have gotten out of their control on too many levels. Opportunistic naivete, I guess you'd call it. For lack of a better term.
I find that true Republicans - those of them who still believe in and subscribe to that fragile piece of toilet paper called the Constitution of the United States - don't like the tactics or values of neoconservatives.
There's a big difference between the two, although to hear some of them rant, you wouldn't think so.
Let's just talk to everyone and anyone about McPalin's proposed healthcare initiatives. That'll scare the hell out of most of them.

Thank you Mr. Gilchrest. If McCain were really a maverick who put "country first," he would support Obama-Biden, too.

i do not think that there is a republican party anymore. it really is the conservative party and they kind of hijacked it from the republicans. the real republicans need to take back their party and this endorsement is going in the right direction.

Yes, it's started, but the only way it can really happen is if Americans wake up and kick the sxxx out of McCain and Palin. That doesn't seem to be happening. They should be losing big - at least 60-40. Decent Republican pols tell the truth only when they retire.

If Wayne Gilchrest is a Maverick, is McCain more like a Pinto? I know one blows up easily.

Wayne Gilchrest is a true patriot in the historic sense of the word. Principles over parties.

Strictly speaking, the most honorable way out for Bush and Cheney is hara-kiri.
