Politico:

Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, a maverick Republican from Maryland, endorsed Illinois Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president in an interview with WYPR, Baltimore's National Public Radio station Wednesday.

Gilchrest, who lost a primary campaign and is retiring from Congress, has already endorsed the Democrat running for his seat, Frank Kratovil. Justifying his endorsement of Obama, Gilchrest said that "we can't use four more years of the same kind of policy that's somewhat haphazard, which leads to recklessness."

Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), "have the breadth of experience. I think they're prudent. They're knowledgable."

Cool.

And I'm just wondering, since this guy is a maverick too. I hope the real Maverick -- the one on TVLand who goes around shooting bad guys -- doesn't get mad that everyone wants to be him.

:-)

Finally, a good Republican. Bush tried to weaken the laws at the EPA to make sure that they would all go extinct.

For a week, I have been saying there are republicans out there like you who can see through this McCain/Palin ticket since learning my own aunts and uncles in TX and MI decided not to support this ticket. Welcome to our side. I hope you stay steadfast and won't change your mind. And for the future of the country, thanks for voting for O.

Thanks for putting on your American hat. We're all in this together, and it is going to take all hands and heads to get this thing turned around. Hopefully all Dems and all Republicans keep that in mind. The cynics and haters would like to make wedge issues for political advantage, but we've all seen where that leads.

It is refreshing to know that there still are some republicans who really care about their country and what happens to it.

Good.

McCain's policies literally got us into this financial debacle.

Obama Biden with a Dem controlled congress will fix social problems and foriegn and domestic security issues.

The only people who wont be happy with dems in power are the same ones who back the GOP.

Mega Rich jerks that live off Freebies from GOP legislators and Dont earn any of their money. Its all given to them in corporate welfare payments and free contracts no bid, no effort, no work.

Thank you Representative Gilchrist for publicly saying what I suspect many fellow legislatures in your party are privately saying.

Thanks to Senator Chuck Hagel also for early and clear speaking out on the lack of appropriateness of Sarah Palin as the Republican VP candidate.

Please stand up too, gentlemen, should a national crisis of new war be vilely attempted these next 47 days as an electoral distraction (or worse to inject voter fear), and should abject voter fraud on registration, absenteed ballots, poll problems by Republicans ensue (as is now being not so quietly suggested).

Ethics in government doesn't end with endorsements. Helping to ensure Americans have a safe, unfettered elective process is your responsibility too.

I'll be impressed when Colen Powell endorses Obama, which he might.

I hope that there are many more GOP like Gilchrest and Hagel, who on Nov 4, in the privacy of the voting booth, will pull the lever for Obama. No one will ahve to know, but they will be happy and can live with themselves, knowing that they put the good of this great country above their party taht has been hijacked by some very wicked people. (Kinda like how the terrorist have hijacked Islam).

This means nothing

political courage would be doing while you were current and seeking re-election

Actually it's becoming a pattern of slow drips. Republicans drifting to the Democratic or Independent side because they know that the McPalin ticket is a sinking ship on the river BushSame.

Since Gilchrest is a Congressman and not a Senator, he IS seeking re-election, as all members of the House must do every two years.
