Politico:

Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, a maverick Republican from Maryland, endorsed Illinois Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president in an interview with WYPR, Baltimore's National Public Radio station Wednesday.

Gilchrest, who lost a primary campaign and is retiring from Congress, has already endorsed the Democrat running for his seat, Frank Kratovil. Justifying his endorsement of Obama, Gilchrest said that "we can't use four more years of the same kind of policy that's somewhat haphazard, which leads to recklessness."

Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), "have the breadth of experience. I think they're prudent. They're knowledgable."

I agree

Its nice to see good poll numbers coming out for Obama, but we need to get out and get folks to vote and register as DEMS

When he wins in Nov, i wont say it was in the polls the whole time

Ill say we registered over 1 million new DEMS to our party and that is how we won

I always like to read "the rest of the story" You know, actual reporting that tells you the rest of the story.

He's no "maverick"; he wouldn't vote how the people in his district wanted him to. He endorsed the Dem in the next election. From Wiki

Gilchrest's voting record is considered liberal for a Republican, and he voted with Democrats more than any other Republican house member in 2007. His Congressional district is rated as strongly Republican by the Cook Partisan Voting Index and supported President Bush's re-election with over 60% of the vote

It is heartwarming to know there are still some honest republicans. I am so sorry that many of them are hanging it up and won't be back to fight for the people of the US.

Actually most of them are retiring so they can bypass the law that restrict them from becoming lobbyists until some time after they have served their terms. They are following the money....

Little by little they are coming out of their Palin-Fog and facing the reality of the situation. That eight years and trillions of debt and countless lives lost....would be a continuing saga by electing this Republican ticket.

ANOTHER 'Washington Insider' is jumping ship? I can hardly WAIT for W.'s endorsement! And I am NOT holding my breath for it either.
I'm sending some of my backstock of Pepto Bismol to the McCain campaign. It's an act of mercy!

This reminds me of the 'drip, drip, drip' from the superdelegates in the primary.

I live in MD in the DC burbs and I'll tell you what's shocking about this: he's retiring! When I first saw this I thought he must be on the ballot again, and this might've helped his chances - but he isn't on the ballot! He doesn't represent my district, but I have to say: he's being completely honest with the voters. Judging from the headlines I'm sure there may be more GOP politicians endorsing Obama.
