The following is a statement released by SEC Chairman Christopher Cox in response to Sen. John McCain saying earlier today on the campaign trail that if he were president he'd fire Cox over the crisis on Wall Street:

Washington, D.C., Sept. 18, 2008 -- Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox today made the following statement:

"While I have great respect for Senator McCain, we have sometimes disagreed, and this is one such occasion. The SEC has made plain that we have zero tolerance for naked short selling. In this market crisis, the men and women of the SEC have responded valiantly as they always do--with the utmost dedication and professionalism. Addressing the extraordinary challenges facing our markets, the independent and bipartisan SEC has taken the following decisive actions:

* We adopted a package of measures to strengthen investor protections against naked short selling, including rules requiring a hard T+3 close-out, eliminating the options market maker exception of Regulation SHO and expressly targeting fraud in short selling transactions.
* We issued an emergency order to enhance protections against naked short selling in the securities of primary dealers, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac.
* We announced emergency plans for a rule to ensure public disclosure of short selling positions of hedge funds and other institutional money managers.
* We have undertaken sweeping enforcement measures against market manipulation.
* We provided guidance to banks about how to account for credit support of money market funds.
* We've written rules to strengthen the regulation of credit rating agencies, and performed examinations that have led to new rules to reduce rating agency conflicts-of-interest.
* We brought a landmark enforcement action against a trader who spread false rumors designed to drive down the price of stock.
* We have initiated exams of the effectiveness of broker-dealers' controls to prevent the spread of false information intended to manipulate securities prices.
* Our Enforcement Division announced what will be the largest settlements in the history of the SEC for investors in auction rate securities who bought auction rate securities from Merrill Lynch, Wachovia, UBS and Citigroup.
* We entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Reserve, to make sure key federal financial regulators share information and coordinate regulatory activities in important areas of common interest.

"There is much more work to be done, and the current crisis is presenting new challenges on an hourly basis. What America and the world needs now is steadiness and reduction of uncertainty. History will judge the quality of our response to this economic crisis, but now is not the time for those of us in the trenches to be distracted by the ebb and flow of the current election campaign. And it is precisely the wrong moment for a change in leadership that inevitably would disrupt the work of the SEC at just the wrong time. I have long made clear my intention to leave the SEC after the end of this Administration. The next President will have an opportunity to look at the major structural questions so important to the regulation and oversight of our financial markets.

"I very much appreciate the strong and immediate support of the President. As someone who has been in public life for over 20 years, I know as well as anyone that occasionally this sort of thing can come with the territory. The best response to political jabs like this is simply to put your head down and not lose a step doing the best job you can possibly do on behalf of those you serve. For my part, I plan to do just that. I leave the political campaigns to pursue their own course."

if mccain/palin get elected, we may actually wish bush was still there.

Yes, indeed! Bush Jr. laid off the situation and let his underlings explore all of the governmental departments to see which of their naive ideas would work and we are in a mess because of it. McCain and Palin who believe themselves to be ever so ready, without a blink will surely mangle things to their (and our) demise. But hey, as long as the networks and cable are getting a lot of viewers to this new installment of "American Idol" the President.

Thank you Mr. Cox. I've never quite read how someone could say 'fxxx' off to someone and yet make it sound like it was prose. Well done.

What concete plans has McCain offered, ever, on the economy? (That make any sense whatsever)
His campaign recently said they don't feel the need to lay out plan just yet. WTF?
This is some real Mavericky action alright. Fire Cox- which a President cannot do and create a 9/11 commission to study the problem for 12 months... and start a war with Spain, F*cking Brilliant!

Mc.Cain and his Republican cronies intentionally let the SEC lose active staff capable of investigating and monitoring the markets and business transactions it is charged to oversee. This fact has been highlighted time and again, and today's debacle is the result.

The Repub strategy, especially Mc.C's, is to accuse any opponent of the fraud and malfeasance you've committed yourself, so that in the public perception, up is down.

Mc.C is leaving Cox to dangle in the wind because he is directly responsible for the agenda and decisions that undercut Cox and the SEC.

This is what a Mc.C Administration will look like, folks.

You can read it between the lines that this is true but it seems Coxie is to upstanding to come out and say that the Bush/McCain administration gelded him and has hung him out to dry like they have so many others - including the American people as a whole.

Fourteen years ago the Republican House and Senate embarked on a plan to get rid of what was left of regulations after Ronnie Raygun got the ball rolling. What they did was cut budgets to ALL of the regulating agencies. This worked extremely well without raising any eyebrows in the process.

Then in comes W to finish the job. Break the bank that had a surplus for the first time in 12 years and give it to the richest 1% of the population and all the multi-national corporations. Small business was raped and pillaged while all the Republicans touted how small business ran the economy (the old say one thing and do the opposite).

Then 9/11 happened which couldn't have come at a better time for these crooks because it allowed the unfettered access to the budget and all monies coming into the Treasury. The Republicans have treated the US Treasury as their own personal blank check and the only thing they didn't get the hooks into was Social Security. Can you imagine what we would be looking at if that had happened?

In John McCain's defense, he does have history with failing financial institutions, but we won't dredge up his bad judgment from years ago.

Instead, let's just go to the current situation of misunderstanding. McCain is using his membership on the Commerce Committee as a means for shoring up that he knows about the current crisis issues first-hand. First, that's not something that would be a good thing, even if it's true. If he knows so much about this, then why hasn't he used that "maverick" style to change things? Is this like Bin Laden where we have to capitulate to blackmail and elect him so he'll tell us the secret? Secondly, he doesn't seem to understand that the Commerce Committee doesn't hold sway over the areas that are currently in crisis which are housing, banking/financial services, and credit http://thinkprogress.org/2008/09/16/mccain-commerce-committee/.

The average guy on the street just assumes that "commerce" is one of those "money sounding" words, so they just take McCain at face value and he gets away with another gaffe that signals that he really isn't as "experienced" as he wants the public to believe.

Mc(In)Sane is on TV lying once again about Obama. He is accusing Obama of essentially "gaming" the system and being a contributor to the crisis of Fannie Mac and Freddie Mae. He is still saying that same lie about Obama voting to tax folks that made $42,000 or more. He is saying that Obama is against tax cuts for business. What he and other Republicans leave out is that tax cuts for businesses and for the very wealthy were passed in 01 and 03 but jobs still went overseas and/or were eliminated anyway. What McSane proposes is still the same. McSane has been in Washington for 26 years and now he wants to fix it. Uh no. The best way for him to fix it is for him to exit off the stage and let Governor Napotilano appoint someone to his Senate seat.

Inasmuch as the Republicans have gutted the regulatory process in every government agency why now are people like McCain are shocked when this stuff plays out. Why wasn't he shocked at the Sago Mine or the Crandall Canyon Mine disasters that cost human lives not just human money? These were cases of equal regulatory failure and now he talks of workers like he's their best friend in the world. I doubt if the Republican Party could be any more duplicitous as they have been in their reign of error, corruption and arrogance.

hey those Republicans are something else - if nothing else they are masters of lying, deceit, denial, corruption and arrogance and will always surpass anyone's wildest expectations of the new lows that they are happy to delve to.

It seems the only people allowed to not preface a criticisim with "while I have a great deal of respect for Senator McCain, but," are those fellow military men who where there with him and feel he's gotten special recognition when others went through harder, longer, and more honorable experiences.

There might have been a time, when John McCain was in the Hanoi Hilton, when he refused to be freed for the sake of his comrades, etc., that he was a true leader.

But that was 40 years ago. Even 8 years ago, I suspect John McCain might have shown more leadership.

But trying to make Cox, one man, the scapegoat for this mess— shifting all the blood from the hands of the Bushies, Cheney, himself, all Republicans and some Democrats who de-regulated us into this mess and ignored repeated warning signs— is PATHETIC. It's wrong. And it's incalculably stupid (does anyone think the public will buy that one heretofore anonymous guy is to blame for all this?)

It is the latest flailing of a drowning politician who is just desperate— will say or do anything ni th eheat of the moment— to get elected.

I'm really starting to wonder now if Numbskull Palin and backers like Tony Perkins aren't actually trying to get McCain't to back out. Seriously. It's funny what losing lots of money does to the Republican psyche.

McCain will throw anyone handy under the bus if it will make him look good. This makes as much sense as Cindy declaring that the excoriation he faced on the View wasn't actually watched by American voters and certainly influenced any that were watching to support him.....

Never mind that the President can't fire an SEC chairman.

geez. These people are so far out of touch that they have no idea what they are saying or who they are saying it to.
